For such purposes specific molecular markers to detect Lydella thompsoni (Herting) and Pseudoperichaeta nigrolineata (Walker) (Diptera: Tachinidae) within the european corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) have been developed. Primers amplifying fragments of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene were designed following alignment of comparable sequences for a range of parasitoid and host species. Each of the primer pairs proved to be species-specific to one of those ta- chinid species, amplifying DNA fragments of 191 and 91 bp in length for L. thompsoni and P. nigrolineata, respectively. This DNA-based technique allowed to perform a molecular detec- tion of parasitism in natural populations of O. nubilalis. Molecular evaluation of parasitism was compared with the traditional method of rearing ECB populations in controlled conditions before breaking off the diapause. -

They are attacked by about 340 species of phytophagous insects, including 71 that are oligophagous on Cynareae. Of these Eurasian insects, 39 were ex tensively tested for host specificity, and 5 of them were sufficiently damf..ghg and stenophagous to warrant their release as biological control agents in North America. They include four beetles: Altica carduorum Guerin-Meneville, repeatedly released but not estab lished; Ceutorhynchus litura (F.), established in Canada and Montana on Cirsium arvense (L.) On the other hand, taxonomic system of the subfamily based on the adults could not yet be said as settled. Hence an in vestigation has been made with the purpose not only of enriching our knowledge on the larval stage of the Japanese Galerucinae but also of deriving some clue for recon sideration of taxonomic system of the group. During this investigation I have examined thirty-one species referable to fourteen genera of the Galerucinae including ten species of the glanduliferous group, the members of which have paired defensive glands on the thoracic or abdominal segments. Descriptions of the larvae of these ten species together with a taxonomic revision of the subfamily will be given in this paper. The terminology adopted in this paper is generally the same as that used by Boving (1929) except for tubercles. That of the tubercles is the same as Kimoto's for Chrysome linae (1962) with slight modifications (see Fig. -

Department of The University of British Columbia 8, Vancouver Canada Date 2-^ (i) ABSTRACT Centaurea diffusa was found to infest 64,079 acres in the semiarid interior of southern British Columbia. C. maculosa has infested an additional 8,420 acres. These weedy plant species are common along roadsides-and in waste places and are spreading rapidly over vast areas of semiarid rangeland. The density of the knapweed species could only be correlated with the degree of soil disturbance and was not correlated with any chemical property of the soil. The knapweeds are not generally grazed by domestic livestock and substantially reduce the forage yields in heavily infested areas. C. diffusa and C. maculosa prevent soil erosion on disturbed sites as these pioneer species are capable of rapid colonization of these sites. -

Tra le specie appartenenti a questa famiglia si riscontrano infatti diversi taxa dannosi a colture agrarie, altri con un limitato areale o una peculiare ecologia che risultano a rischio di estinzione a causa dell’antropizzazione.
