    Saint of the Day January January 1: Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God This feast of Mary is considered to be one of the oldest and most important feasts of Our Lady. In 431, the Council of Ephesus met to correct false teachings about Christ’s divinity. The Council affirmed that Jesus is true God and true man. Since Mary is the Mother of Jesus, who is the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, she can truly be called the Mother of God. Devotion to Mary as the Mother of God continued to spread from this time to the present. January 2: St. Basil the Great, Bishop Born to wealthy family in 330, Basil’s family had been Christians for generations. He was well educated, and eventually settled in Caesarea to practice law in 356. There, he met a bishop named Eustanthius and radically changed his life. He wrote, “I beheld the wonderful light of the Gospel truth, and I recognized the nothingness of the wisdom of the princes of this world.” He was baptized and founded a monastic community on his family estate. St. Basil wrote many works about monastic life which has deeply influence the Eastern Church. He attended the Council of Constantinople in 360 and supported the Nicene Creed. He was made a bishop in 370 and focused on serving the poor and reforming criminals. He died in 379.     JANUARY 1 Peter of Atroa (773–837) EMinistry under duress Ephesus is a popular archaeological site on the western coast of today’s Turkey. The apostle Paul established a Christian congregation there on his first missionary journey, remaining there three years, ministering to first-generation Christians. About seven hundred years later, Peter of Atroa was born to Christian parents in the neighborhood of Ephesus. Peter had natural spiritual interests, and at eighteen, he became a monk, and a few years later, an ordained priest. As he began a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, a mystical vision turned him and his companion aside with the inspiration to build a monastery. A strong work resulted and Peter became the monastery’s leader at the age of thirty-two. People sought him because of his reputation as a healer and because of his sensitive spirit. The early ninth century was a difficult time for Christians in that part of the world. Persecution increased with each passing year, and Peter worked fervently to protect his monks from harm. He died on the first day of January, 837, in the chapel choir, while his brother monks sang around him. Superior General of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On November 25, 2001, The Salesian family will have a new saint! In honor of her canonization, I would like to reflect briefly on St. Leonie Aviat, Mother Frances de Sales. I will begin my reflections with a few remarks on the central place of “Nazareth” in the spirituality of our founders, for that appreciation provides a helpful clue into the “sleeves rolled up” holiness of that remarkable contemporary woman and saint. You can learn much about the spirituality of saints from their favorite scriptural passages. Whenever I read something by St. Francis de Sales, for instance, I am careful to observe what Scripture he is quoting, or paraphrasing or alluding to. In this way, I have discovered that a particular favorite of our Patron id Galatians 2:20: “the life I live now is not my own; Christ is living in me.” This passage is central to an appreciation of his Jesus-centered spirituality: “Live Jesus!” In Galatians 2:29 St. Paul affirms that Christians are now dead, having been “crucified with Christ.” Dead, we no longer live; now Christ lives in us and acts through us. And this is how he continues to pour out the effects of his Redemption throughout time and history. Our role in all of this is a simple one: to “get out of way” to make room for the Savior to live and act in us and, thus, to be seen once again walking upon the earth.
