Chapel House South-West England £975,000 Freehold Chapel House Occupying a quiet, rural position in a quintessential Wiltshire hamlet is Chapel House; a most exceptional Grade II Listed congregational Chapel and Chapel House predating 1862. Breathing new life into the 19th Century foundations, the two ecclesiastical buildings, adjoined by a modern glass walkway, have been renovated with exquisite attention to detail. Te internal living space of around 2,360 sqft, pairs impressive architectural proportions with a soft colour palette and tactile materials. Te bucolic setting is a peaceful haven, with the city of Bath less than ten miles south, Bristol 20 miles west and Te Cotswolds 30 miles to the north. Approached by a country lane, the original chapel door provides the primary entrance, accessed via a nepeta-lined path through the front garden. Te renovated chapel is breathtaking; an exciting, double-height, open-plan living space replete in rich historical details and carrying an air of noble sophistication. Vaulted cathedral ceilings are paired with deep-set, arched sash windows with oiled pitch-pine foorboards underfoot. Te natural light is exceptional. +44 (0)20 3795 5920 themodernhouse.com [email protected] Chapel House Te chapel was entirely renovated, re-roofed and re- plumbed, exceptionally well insulated, new electrics were ftted and new joists and new radiators installed. Te vast interior has been sensitively divided, with a bespoke kitchen designed by Atelier with an Aga set to one side, and dining and living areas loosely organised in opposite corners of the room. Hand-crafted cabinetry is fnished in lime-washed oak and free-standing workstations neatly house appliances. Walls are coloured in chalky grey and pendant light fttings hang overhead to provide a soft illumination. Doorways at one end of the space lead through to a playroom (or additional bedroom) and an adjacent shower room screed in microcement has a modern, tactile fnish. Te glass walkway provides a seamless passage to the house, where a rear extension room is clad in Siberian Larch, with strategically placed picture windows framing views to the garden. An internal courtyard formed between the two buildings provides a charming space for summer lunches, with sliding glass doors, framed in aluminium, creating a wonderful free-fow between the interior and exterior spaces. Chapel House has a warm and homely feel; the panelled living room painted a pale green with solid oak foorboards, shuttered windows, and a log-burning stove. Te adjoining second reception room, currently set out as an ofce, has a beautiful stone freplace pre-ftted with an insulated fu ready for a second log-burning stove, fanked by inset oak shelving. A fourth bedroom is positioned adjacently. Stairwells lead up to the foor above and down to the cellar below. An excellent quality of light streams through the bathroom and two double bedrooms on the upper level, each with far- reaching views over feld-upon-feld of surrounding farmland. Dry-stone walls, specimen trees and mature hedging form the external boundary of the private garden and expanses of lawn. Tere is also summer house and a treehouse constructed with 150 year-old foorboards from the chapel. Te second terrace outside the playroom is perfect for morning cofee, bordered by beds of herbaceous perennials. Echinacea, salvia, verbena, prairie-style grasses and beds of white cosmos are paired harmoniously with the wonderful South-West England pale patina of Bath stone. £975,000 Freehold North Wraxall Parish consists of a community of fve villages and hamlets in north west Wiltshire, including Ford, Mountain Bower, North Wraxall, Te Shoe and Upper Wraxall. Te house sits in the catchment area for a good selection of both private and state primary and secondary schools. +44 (0)20 3795 5920 themodernhouse.com [email protected] Chapel House Chippenham train station is around 12 minutes’ drive away with journeys to London Paddington taking 70 minutes on the fast and direct mainline calling at only three other stations. • Wiltshire Churchyard Yews an Inventory
Wiltshire Churchyard Yews An Inventory By Peter Norton By kind permission of the Wiltshire Geology Group Introduction: Wiltshire is roughly rectangular in shape, measuring about 54 miles from north to south and 34 from west to east. It is bounded in the north by Gloucestershire, along most of its western edge by Somerset, in the south west by Dorset, in the south east by Hampshire and along about half of its eastern side by Berkshire. The name is derived from that of the former county town of Wilton, and was recorded as Wiltunscir in an 870AD docu- ment. Ancient Wilton took the name from the Anglo-Saxon Wilsaetes tribe living on the banks of the River Wylye. The surface geology of Wiltshire follows relatively simple lines. The former cover of Chalk and earlier Cretaceous rocks has been removed by erosion in the basin of the Wiltshire Avon, leaving a prominent scarp trending generally NE/SW across the centre of the County. To the northwest, the Jurassic rocks crop out in succession, dipping south eastwards under the Chalk. To the southeast, the Cretaceous rocks form the high ground of the Marlborough Downs and Salisbury plain. In the southeast corner there are some small outcrops of Tertiary rocks at the extreme edge of the Hampshire Basin. Two major vales finger into the Chalk outcrop, the Vale of Pewsey, floored by Lower Cretaceous rocks, and the Vale of Wardour, which cuts down as far as the Upper Jurassic rocks. Wilts’county records list 451 towns, villages and hamlets. Churches are found in the majority of towns and villages, with 339 having at least one Anglican Church.
