A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief Preface to Members of the Ellsworth and McArthur Handcart Companies of 1856 It has been my purpose in preparing this compilation of vital statistical information to show my appreciation for the Ellsworth and McArthur Handcart Companies. Unfortunately, some of the statistical information recorded by the members and their posterity was inaccurate, conflicting, or incomplete. Where possible, research was done to alleviate this problem The compiled information was gathered and used as a secondary source for submitting pioneer names for temple work to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Genealogical Department. As a result of this study over 200 ordinances were identified and performed for members of the Ellsworth and McArthur Handcart Companies in the Provo Temple. The fir.st is the most ancient records we have of the Tanner family and has already been.prepared by Reverend George C. Tanner, D.D., of Fairbault, Minnesota. His book is a 'marvelous work of pains-taking care and devotion. The: second part is the first division of the genealogy of John Tanner, born July 2, 1810, in Greenwich, New York. Most of his descendants are found in the West, John Tanner having joined the Mormon Church in September, 1832. The third part is the second division of the gen­ ealogy of John Tanner's posterity. It will remain for future prepara­ tion. The present volume includes "2,562 names and it is estimated that ,vhen completed his descendants will riumber something like 3,500. The Mormon Churclt has been noted for the numerous posterity of its early scions. No one c-0mpares in number of his posterity with John Tanner who arrived in Utah in 1848 and died in 1850. The Reverend George C. Tanner 'has given us_ a brief statement of the manner in which the data for ibis book was collected. Following his explanation there is included brief excerpts from his book. These excerpts connect the earliest family record with John Tanner.

DOUGALL ROY 'RED DUGALD OF COLL'4 MCPHADEN (DONALD (ISLE OF COLL)3, JOHN2, ANGUS1) was born in the Isle of Coll, Argyll, Scotland, and died in the Isle of Tiree, Argyll, Scotland. Dougall Roy Mcphaden was also known as Red Dugald of Coll. It is estimated that he was born about 1650-1660. He did not appear on the 1716 List of Men Capable of Bearing Arms in Tiree, although his son Donald and two other Mcphadens were so listed in Ruaig, and he may well have been dead by that date. The MacFadyen Pedigree compiled by Sarah (MacDonald) Lamont named Dougall Roy as the progenitor of her line and referred to him as "Red Dugald of Coll", inferring that he was the first of her MacFadyen line to have come to Tiree from that neighboring island. This was confirmed by Nicholas Maclean-Bristol in a genealogical chart, which showed Dougall Roy as living in Ardnish, Coll, but later in Tiree. Dougall Roy was also shown as Dougall McDonald Vc Eane in a list of all the men and soldiers that served under Donald McLeane in the House of Breackaich (Breacachadh Castle), in July 3, 1679, as was his brother Duncan and cousins, John, and Donald. A Murdo McIain Vc Eane was also listed among these household men, but whether he was a Mcphaden is open to question.

Abbott, John Henry Macartney, The South Seas (Melanesia). London: Adam and Charles Black, 1908. Born in New South Wales in 1874, Abbott worked as a jackeroo in the Hunter Valley until he started writing for The Bulletin in 1897. He fought in the South African War in 1900 and wrote about his experiences in the book, Tommy Cornstalk (1902). His success took him to England as a freelance journalist, where he wrote four books, including The South Seas (Melanesia). This was part of the ‘Peeps at Many Lands’ series for children, which was based on his travels in c. 1907. It was illustrated by Norman Hardy. Abbott spent the rest of his life writing in New South Wales and died in Sydney in 1953. Allan, William, Homeward Bound, from Australia to Scotland: Impressions by the Way. Helensburgh: Helensburgh and Gareloch Times, 1915. Born in Scotland, Allan lived in Queensland as a journalist for Warwick Argus. Reprinted from the Helensburgh and Gareloch Times, this short book is an account of a holiday trip to Scotland via Canada and the US, beginning in Sydney on 8 July 1915.
