Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity. -

Mitt. 12:46-56 Basel, Dezember 1996 Spiders (Araneae) of stony debris in North Bohemia o v v Vlastimil RUZICKA & Jaromfr HAJER Abstract: The arachnofauna was studied at five stony debris sites in northern Bohemia. In Central Europe, the northern and montane species inhabiting cold places live not only on mountain tops and peat bogs but also on the lower edges of boulder debris, where air streaming through the system of inner compartments gives rise to an exceedingly cold microclimate. At such cold sites, spiders can live either on bare stones (Bathyphantes simillimus, Wubanoides ura/ensis), or in the rich layers of moss and lichen (Dip/oeentria bidentata). Kratoehviliella bieapitata exhibits a diplostenoecious occurrence in stony debris and on tree bark. Latithorax faustus and Theonoe minutissima display diplostenoecious occurrence in stony debris and on peat bogs. The occurrence of the species Seotina eelans in the Czech Republic was documented for the first time. Key words: Spiders, stony debris, microclimate, geographic distribution. INTRODUCTION Stony debris constitute, in Central Europe, island ecosystems which have remained virtually intact over the entire Holocene. Due to the unfeasibility of utilization, stony debris areas are among the few ecosystems that have only minimally been affected by man. In bulky accumulations, air can flow through the system of internal spaces. In this way, cold air can accumulate in the lower part of the tal us, so that ice can form and persist there until late spring. This phenomenon, well known from the Alp region (FURRER 1966), occurs widely in North Bohemia (KUBAT 1971). Owing to the specific substrate and microclimate, stony debris areas are inhabited by specific plant (SADLO & KOLBEK 1994) and animal communities, contributing thus o v v significantly to the biodiversity of the landscape (RUZICKA 1993a). -

During this study 13 species of seven genera belong to two families Ascidae and Melicharidae were collected and identified. Four species namely Asca aphidioides (LINNAEUS), Zerconopsis michaeli EVANS & HYATT, Antennoseius (Antennoseius) bacatus ATHIAS-HENRIOT from family Ascidae and Proctolaelaps scolyti EVANS from family Melicharidae are new records for the mites fauna of Guilan Province. Proctolaelaps fiseri SAMŠIŇÁK (Melicharidae) and Zerconopsis remiger (KRAMER) (Ascidae) are new for Iran mites fauna. Expanded descriptions including illustrations of the adult female of Proctolaelaps fiseri and Zerconopsis remiger, respectively are provided based on the Iranian material. As an ultimate goal, this field course intended to contribute to a global project that intends to uncover spider diversity patterns worldwide. With that purpose, a set of standardised methods and procedures was followed that allow the comparability of obtained data with numerous other projects being conducted across all continents. New information A total of 104 species and 1997 adults was collected. -

C h a m b e r l i n a n d W i l t o n I v i e The frequency with which members of the Agelenid genus Cybaeus appeared in collections made by the authors in the mountainous and timbered sections of the Pacific coast region and the representations therein of various apparently undescribed species led to the preparation of this review of the known North American forms. One species hereto fore placed in Cybaeus is made the type of a new genus Cybaeina. Most of our species occur in the western states; and it is probable that fur ther collecting in this region will bring to light a considerable number of additional forms. The drawings accompanying the paper were made from specimens direct excepting in a few cases where material was not available. In these cases the drawings were copied from the figures published by the authors of the species concerned, as indicated hereafter in each such case, but these drawings were somewhat revised to conform with the general scheme of the other figures in order to facilitate comparison. -

(Brazil) December, 1974 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of London and for the Diploma of Imperial College Imperial College of Science and Technology, Silwood Park, Ascot, Berkshire. 2 ABSTRACT Studies in the laboratory and under field conditions were made on the biology and population ecology of Macrosteles sexnotatus (Fall6n) (Cicadellidae, Hemiptera). Laboratory studies on the biology were carried out under a set of constant temperature conditions. The rela- tionship between temperature and rates of egg and nymphal development are presented and discussed. Effects of tempera- ture on fecundity and longevity were also studied, and choice of oviposition sites under laboratory and field conditions were investigated. Studies were carried out to induce hatching of diapausing eggs and also to induce diapause in the eggs. The internal reproductive organs of males and females are described and illustrated. Illustrated descrip- tions are also given of the five nymphal stages and sexes are distinguished from third instar onwards. Descriptions and illustrations are given of a short winged form which occurred in the laboratory cultures. Population studies_of M. sexnotatus in an catfield • were carried out from 1972 to 1974. Adults and nymphs were sampled regularly with a D-vac suction sampler and occa- sionally with a sweep net. Weekly population estimates were made from June to late September for 1973 and 1974 and for August and September of 1972. Population budgets are presented and causes of mortality are discussed. Losses caused by parasitism in the nymphal and adult stages are 3 shown to be smaller than those within the egg stage. -

The knowledge of dispersal evolution, motivation, its effect on metapopulation dynamics and species distribution at multiple scales is poorly understood and many questions remain unsolved or require empirical verification. In this thesis we contribute to the knowledge of dispersal, by studying both ecological and evolutionary aspects of spider dispersal in fragmented grey dunes. Studies were performed at the individual, population and assemblage level and indicate that behavioural traits narrowly linked to dispersal, con- siderably show [adaptive] variation in function of habitat quality and geometry. Dispersal also determines spider distribution patterns and metapopulation dynamics. Until now, the data on oribatid species have not been published. This paper presents a list of oribatid species collected during 21 years of ongoing research in three pine stands of different age. The faunistic records refer to 84 species (including 17 species new to the fauna of Latvia), 1 subspecies, 1 form, 5 morphospecies and 18 unidentified taxa. The most dominant and most frequent oribatid species are Oppiella (Oppiella) nova, Tectocepheus velatus velatus and Suctobelbella falcata.
