  • Transgender Representation on American Narrative Television from 2004-2014
TRANSJACKING TELEVISION: TRANSGENDER REPRESENTATION ON AMERICAN NARRATIVE TELEVISION FROM 2004-2014 A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Kelly K. Ryan May 2021 Examining Committee Members: Jan Fernback, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Ron Becker, External Member, Miami University ABSTRACT This study considers the case of representation of transgender people and issues on American fictional television from 2004 to 2014, a period which represents a steady surge in transgender television characters relative to what came before, and prefigures a more recent burgeoning of transgender characters since 2014. The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. Television representations and the social milieu in which they are situated are considered as parallel, mutually informing discourses, including the ways in which those representations have been engaged discursively through reviews, news coverage and, in some cases, blogs. ii To Desmond, Oonagh and Eamonn For everything. And to my mother, Elaine Keisling, Who would have read the whole thing. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Throughout the research and writing of this dissertation, I have received a great deal of support and assistance, and therefore offer many thanks. To my Dissertation Chair, Jan Fernback, whose feedback on my writing and continued support and encouragement were invaluable to the completion of this project.

September 12, 2016 | Vol. 69 No. 35 Read more at: minonline.com Top Story: Clowns, Cosplay and Calves Drive July Video Growth Desktop loses ground, mobile levels off and moving images continue to dominate Is mobile losing its muscle? The MPA’s Magazine Media 360º Brand Audience Report for July show an acceleration of the migration towards both smaller screens and sight-sound-motion and away from the desktop. No surprises. In year-over-year comparisons, in aggregate the member magazine brands show basically flat growth (+1.2%) in print and digital editions and a marked decline (-12.5%) in desktop audience. Again, no surprises. What's a bit surprising is that the mobile migration itself saw a modest 19% expansion. Compare this to the July 2015 trends, for instance, when mobile audience had grown 58.3% over July 2014. In just a year’s time, the shift of focus to video has been dramatic. In July 2015 we saw an annual YoY growth of only 6.2% in video uniques for magazine brands. But in July of this year, it's 43.6%. In terms of raw audience tonnage at least, if not monetization, this suggests that investments in streaming media and intelligent distribution are paying off. Continued on page 4 A Homecoming of Sorts for Michele Promaulayko The former Cosmo editor returns as EIC (and editorial director of Seventeen) As anyone who doesn't live under a rock knows, Hearst announced this week that Michele Promaulayko would return to the company where she previously worked for nine years as Cosmo's executive editor.

Sarah Artt and Anne Schwan, 2016] Screening Women’s Imprisonment: Agency and Exploitation in Orange is the New Black Editors: Sarah Artt and Anne Schwan Based on Piper Kerman’s 2010 memoir Orange is the New Black: My Time in a Women’s Prison, Jenji Kohan’s adaptation for Netflix follows white middle-class New Yorker Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) into the fictional Litchfield Penitentiary where she encounters a diverse community of incarcerated women. Together with House of Cards and Hemlock Grove, Orange is the New Black (OITNB) was one of the first original series commissioned by on-demand streaming platform Netflix. At the time of writing, three seasons, produced by Lionsgate, have screened (2013-2015), with a further four seasons to follow (Littleton 2016). Season one introduces Piper and the audience to the world of the prison, including a core group of women such as Alex Vause (Laura Prepon), Piper’s former girlfriend whose drug smuggling business she had been implicated in ten years prior; Galina “Red” Reznikova (Kate Mulgrew), one of the show’s older women who has built an empire through her role as cook; Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren (Uzo Aduba) who develops a romantic obsession with Piper; Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson (Danielle Brooks), one of a group of black women who challenge Piper’s internalized privilege; butch lesbian Carrie “Big Boo” Black, played by comedian Lea DeLaria; “white trash” drug addict Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett (Taryn Manning) who becomes Piper’s nemesis in season one; Gloria Mendoza (Selenis Leyva) who challenges Red over the kitchen empire; and Dayanara “Daya” Diaz (Dascha Polanco) who falls in love with (and is impregnated by) officer John Bennett (Matt McGorry).

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Silence, Sound and Subtitles: Exploring Quechua, K’iche’ and the History of Indigenous Languages in United States Film and Television A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Rachel Irene Sprouse 2021 © Copyright by Rachel Irene Sprouse 2021 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Silence, Sound and Subtitles: Exploring Quechua, K’iche’ and the History of Indigenous Languages in United States Film and Television by Rachel Irene Sprouse Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2021 Professor Paul V. Kroskrity, Co-Chair Professor Teresa L. McCarty, Co-Chair This project seeks to understand the role that Indigenous languages, and specifically those of Latin America, play in mainstream United States film and television. Drawing on tools and ideas from American Indian studies, linguistic anthropology and film studies, this project constructs a chronology of Indigenous-language film dialogue from 1894 to 2021. Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019) and Orange Is the New Black (2013-2019) serve as case studies, highlighting Quechua- and K’iche’-speaking characters respectively. A comparison of these two programs initiates a larger conversation around grassroots language advocacy, federal policy initiatives and ii hemispheric approaches to the study of Indigeneity in the Americas. Ultimately, City of Gold and OITNB reveal the extent to which language issues have permeated the public consciousness. Their presence in Hollywood reaffirms the need for interdisciplinary and hemispheric analyses on Indigenous migrant languages, realities and cinema. iii The thesis of Rachel Irene Sprouse is approved.

They walk toward each other, staring the other down the whole time. They finally come together and embrace. They catch up and we learn that Vee and Red have been here together before, but they feel much older now. • Characters: RED (Kate Mulgrew), VEE (Lorraine Toussaint) Clip 2 • Start: 14:05 shot of Crazy Eyes graduation • Finish: 9:42 ends on Piper turning around to see Vee has influence over Crazy Eyes • Synopsis: We see Suzanne’s (Crazy Eyes) parents and sister giving her a pep-talk before she is supposed to sing at her high school graduation. She freezes onstage and begins to hit herself. We cut to the Christmas pageant, where Suzanne also freezes onstage, and is rescued by Norma and the rest of the ladies. We see her leave the auditorium, high on the Christmas spirit, but she runs into Maritza and Flaca who then make fun of the way she hit herself when she froze onstage, which triggers the memories of her mother pushing her to do things when she was younger. She snaps and runs outside and in a daze attacks Piper (who is in the midst of attacking Pennsatucky), taking out her anger towards her mother.
