RIVER TRENT and the TRENT AND MERSEY CANAL The River Trent rises near Biddulph Moor in Staffordshire and flows through that county and the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and finally, after 168 miles, Humberside. It ends at Trent Falls and its confluence with the Rivers Ouse and Humber. The Trent is our third longest river. Its principal tributaries being; the rivers Sow, Tame, Dove, Derwent, Erewash, Soar and Idle, all of which are canoeable. The River Trent is known to be practicable from Trentham Park, except in dry spells, but the usual starting place for "the 100 mile" is either from Stone on the Trent or Penkridge on the River Penk, then into the River Sow joining the Trent at Haywood. Our plan has been designed to help articulate the wide range of issues and priorities that are seen as key in managing the part of the wonderful canal network that comprises the Central Shires waterways, and to construct a solid foundation from which we can meet the challenges that lie ahead. This plan goes beyond the commitment to high quality day to day maintenance of the canals and rivers to protecting and improving the navigation experience of the existing waterways. It has been a privilege to be chair of the Central Shires Waterway Partnership and work with a dedicated team of volunteers alongside the Trust’s local management team. -

It supplements policies of the adopted Derby and Derbyshire Minerals Local Plan by providing planning guidance on the after use of sand and gravel sites in the Trent, Lower Derwent and Lower Dove Valleys. The SPG sets out a framework of principles aimed at securing a preferred pattern of after uses for worked out sand and gravel sites. For specific sites that have been allocated for working in the Minerals Local Plan and sites that have permission for working but no approved detailed reclamation scheme, the SPG sets out preferred after uses in accordance with these principles. Publicity and Consultation In preparing the SPG the Councils are required to consult the general public, businesses, and other interested parties and take their views into account before finalising the document. The way in which the Councils have carried out this requirement is set out in the Statement of Publicity and Consultation and the Schedule of Representations, included in this edition of the SPG. Burton on Trent is home to the National Brewery Centre which has an excellent Visitors centre. Along the way there are numerous pretty villages and Canalside Pubs. Cruising Notes Day 1 Leaving the marina, you will first be heading towards Derwent Mouth Lock, the first lock on your cruise. This is where the Trent and Mersey canal meets the River Trent. Within an hour or so of departure, you arrive at Shardlow. This is an attractive canal village with a restaurant and a number of Canalside Pubs, including the Navigation Inn by Bridge 3, a haunted pub with moorings. Also near the Canal is the Old Crown . This is a good place for the first night’s mooring. There is a Heritage Centre where you can gain an insight to canal life from the early 18th century, near Shardlow Lock, as you leave the village. -

2 A Provisional Atlas of the Carabidae of Leicestershire & Rutland Derek Lott, Graham Finch & Gareth Price LESOPS 25 (2011) ISSN 0957 - 1019 A collaborative publication from The Leicestershire & Rutland Environmental Resources Centre and The Leicestershire Entomological Society 3 FOREWORD In the spring of 2009, Derek Lott, Graham Finch & Gareth Price embarked on the production of this atlas. The idea of the atlas was the brainchild of Graham Finch, who had attended a ground beetle training course and became well aware of the need for a VC55 distribution atlas. In July 2009 a very simple first draft was produced. Derek Lott and Graham Finch scrutinized the first draft. A number of important issues needed consideration, such as taxonomic changes, the classification of sites, obtaining accurate grid references and the removal of invalid species records falsely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland. Derek Lott provided Carabidae context to some sites in the gazetteer as well as providing species context. The production of this atlas was made much easier by the life-long work of Derek Lott, who had already accumulated vast amounts of ground beetle data and local knowledge, without which this atlas would not have been possible. Special thanks go the Carabidae recorders who have sent in records. We have endeavoured to reference and acknowledge the people and sources that have helped in the production of this atlas but often with natural history publications there are too many people to thank over a very long period of time. Our apologies go to the people or sources that have been inadvertently omitted. The gazetteer obtained information from a number of sources, in particular the Flora of Leicestershire (Primavesi & Evans, 1988) and the Flora of Rutland (Messenger, 1971). -

An Introduction to Bamford Bamford is a village surrounded by outstanding countryside in the Peak District National Park; Bamford is situated 12 miles west of Sheffield, alongside the upper reaches of the River Derwent. The Derwent runs southwards to join the River Trent south of Derby; prior to Bamford, it has flowed through three 20th-century reservoirs constructed by the Derwent Valley Water Board; the southernmost of these - Ladybower reservoir – abuts Bamford. The gritstone escarpment Bamford Edge separates Bamford Moor (around 400m above sea-level) from, and dominates the skyline of, Bamford village. Win Hill (463m) to the north and Shatton Edge (400m) to the south are also visible from Bamford, contributing to the village being surrounded by hilly country on most sides. On the map at left, civil parish boundaries are in dark blue. Bamford’s existence was recorded, as ‘Banford’ - then a hamlet of just two households - in the Domesday Book in 1086. It grew when a corn- (later converted to cotton-) mill was built in the 1700s at Bamford weir on the Derwent. The mill closed in 1965, and its attractive buildings are now residential apartments. In the 1800s the Moore family, the mill’s owners, built houses for mill workers; consequently, Bamford has more terraced housing than is usual in a Peak District village.
