O’Neill Professor Anne-Lise François Summer 2018 © 2018 Matthew Stanhope Mewhinney All Rights Reserved Abstract The Lyric Forms of the Literati Mind: Yosa Buson, Ema Saikō, Masaoka Shiki and Natsume Sōseki by Matthew Stanhope Mewhinney Doctor of Philosophy in Japanese Language University of California, Berkeley Professor Alan Tansman, Chair This dissertation examines the transformation of lyric thinking in Japanese literati (bunjin) culture from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. I examine four poet- painters associated with the Japanese literati tradition in the Edo (1603-1867) and Meiji (1867- 1912) periods: Yosa Buson (1716-83), Ema Saikō (1787-1861), Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) and Natsume Sōseki (1867-1916). Each artist fashions a lyric subjectivity constituted by the kinds of blending found in literati painting and poetry. I argue that each artist’s thoughts and feelings emerge in the tensions generated in the process of blending forms, genres, and the ideas (aesthetic, philosophical, social, cultural, and historical) that they carry with them. -

Research and Information Service Research Paper 29 April 2013 Dr Dan Hull Preparations and legacy planning for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 NIAR 213-13 This research paper summarises preparations by the Scottish Government and other public bodies for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014. It also examines plans for the social and economic legacy of the Games, and highlights a number of issues which may be of interest in a Northern Ireland context. Paper 92/13 29 April 2013 Research and Information Service briefings are compiled for the benefit of MLAs and their support staff. The twentieth Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow over 11 days between 23 July and 3 August 2014. Six thousand athletes and officials from 71 commonwealth nations and territories will attend, with 17 sports represented in total. There will be 20 events (across five sports) for elite athletes with disabilities. The budget for the Games is £561.7m, with around £461m being provided from public funds with the remainder raised through commercial activities. Fourteen venues will be used for the Games, including a purpose-built athletes’ village, velodrome and arena at Dalmarnock in the East End of Glasgow. -

Carnwath (Stage 1) Local Community Led Plan Carnwath Local Carnwath Community Led Plan Community 2006 Carnwath Action Plan Carnwath is one of 4 Communities which has been selected to take part in the preparation of a Community Led Plan for the future of their town/village. It is a new and exciting way for communities to become more involved in the Community Planning Process and to heighten awareness of the partners and processes involved in Community Planning. It is one of 15 pilot demonstration projects across Scotland, each of which is testing new ways of involving local people in Community Planning - a process through which local authorities and the main public sector agencies work together to establish a bottom-up approach to plan, prioritise, and deliver better public services with the involvement and assistance of local communities. This Local Community Action Plan is a result of an initiative by Communities Scotland, and is also supported by South Lanarkshire Rural Partnership Leader+. The project presents an opportunity for local residents to: become involved and contribute to the preparation of a community focused local plan better understand, participate in, and influence the Statutory Community Planning process make known their priorities for the town support Carnwath to organise and take forward some local initiatives by itself. The Plan itself is a tool through which the community of Carnwath can enter into dialogue with providers of services, and examine how improvements might be made. Moreover, it identifies a range of actions which the community itself can undertake through co-ordinated voluntary action. At the heart of this process is an understanding that - in the light of public sector finances becoming ever more tightly focused - the community which will flourish will have a clear and realistic idea of it’s future, a commitment to helping itself, and a spirit of local responsibility. -
