BALDERNOCK COMMUNITY COUNCIL Minutes of the Meeting 03/08 held on 28th. May 2008 Present: Mark Hazell, chairman Prof. Peter Langhorne, treasurer Geoffrey Jarvis, committee member John Hansen, secretary Rev Andrew Lees Councillor Anne McNair PC Steve McInnes Jo Swinson MP - part time 12 other members of the community 1. Apologies None 2. Minutes of Meeting 02/08 One item in the minutes was disputed - the planning item TP/ED/08/0132. The details of the application taken from the EDC notes are wrong. There is no garage or decking involved in the proposed works. In order to avoid any further promulgation of EDC errors it was agreed only to list new items and to refer readers to the EDC Web site for details. The secretary has had responses from EDC Planning to our submissions re. screening the new offices at Stent foundations and from Rangers FC about their floodlights. We are to take note of when the lights are on after 10 p.m. or when the pitches are not in use and to get back to them with these details. Further to an insubstantial response from EDC Roads about the potholes, pavements and flooding up Craigmaddie it was agreed that we should photograph the details of our complaints and send them to EDC roads. Mark led a vote of thanks to those who turned out on our clean up day to litter pick the Linn, Bardowie and Balmore, and to Councillor Anne for all her work to set up facilities. 3. May 2008 3.2.OTHER ISSUES 3.2.1.BOGUS WORKERS This time of the year can usually see an increase in bogus worker type crimes. These individuals will be strangers, and will attend at peoples homes unannounced, offering to carry out gardening or minor repairs. However their main purpose is to significantly over-charge for the work completed or to gain access into the house to steal property (wallet, purse, money, credit cards etc). This type of cold caller will not be from a legitimate company. Do not let them into your home. If you are suspicious about any person attending at your door, call the Police. 3.2.2.INTER VILLAGE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT Unfortunately, Baldernock Primary had to withdraw from this years competition due to other commitments. Now in its third year, the event was a great success, with St Machan©s Primary, Lennoxtown winning. Hopefully Baldernock will be back next year. 3.2.3.POLICE SURGERY There has been a significant increase in the number of local people using the Police Surgery held within Baldernock Church Hall, every Wednesday, between 13.30 - IS.OOhrs. Anybody is welcome to attend for advice, or a friendly chat. PC Steve Mclnnes B816 Community Police Kirkintilloch Police Office Tel 0141 5324400/4453. 4. Cut the Carbon Geoffrey is handing over his leadership of our group to our "good women". Alison Hazell and Jean Langhorne have agreed to generate activity. Fintry and Strathblane are local communities to watch and liaise with, as they seem to be making progress. Geoffrey would like to arrange a showing of the "11th Hour" film for our members who missed its screening on TV last week. 5. Tidy Up the Ford We all agreed that the Ford is a mess, a health and safety hazard, and a very bad way for vehicles and cycles. Work must be done to clean up the landscaping, fix the handrail and path hazards, and to repair the potholes in the pavement and road. Alison agreed to take photos and raise the matter again with EDC. If nothing comes of this we shall seek offers for the repair work and look for members© approval to use the community council funds. 6. September 2008. 11.Interval for Refreshments and conversation on events Biscuits, Tea, coffee, wine and chat were enjoyed by all present. 12.Talk by John Hansen ªHarnessing Solar Energyº John closed the evening with a presentation on his solar experience which he is about to resume by managing the construction of a new plant in Egypt. Having explained how he became involved in Solar he took us through the range of systems which he has constructed or helped to develop to generate power. He outlined the other systems available and had a short discussion on their merits. Finally he presented a chart of the solar energy available annually throughout Europe that shows nowhere in Europe gets up to 87% of the energy available to the world areas currently developing large power systems. Worse still the chart clearly shows the West of Scotland as one of the cloudiest corners of Europe getting only 28% of the solar energy available to plants that have so far proved to be viable today.
