HOW LEGO CONSTRUCTS A CROSS-PROMOTIONAL FRANCHISE WITH VIDEO GAMES by David Wooten A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee August 2013 ABSTRACT HOW LEGO CONSTRUCTS A CROSS-PROMOTIONAL FRANCHISE WITH VIDEO GAMES by David Wooten The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2013 Under the Supervision of Professor Michael Newman The purpose of this project is to examine how the cross-promotional Lego video game series functions as the site of a complex relationship between a major toy manufacturer and several media conglomerates simultaneously to create this series of licensed texts. The Lego video game series is financially successful outselling traditionally produced licensed video games. The Lego series also receives critical acclaim from both gaming magazine reviews and user reviews. By conducting both an industrial and audience address study, this project displays how texts that begin as promotional products for Hollywood movies and a toy line can grow into their own franchise of releases that stills bolster the original work.

The thesis may not be reproduced elsewhere without the permission of the Author. PC-Based Aviation Training Devices for Pilot Training in Visual Flight Rules Procedures; Development, Validation and Effectiveness A thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Aviation at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand Savern Reweti 2014 Abstract Flying is a difficult and complex activity that requires a significant level of attention from the pilot as well as a lengthy training period to gain sufficient competency. For issues of both cost and safety, flight simulation has been an integral part of flight training from its earliest beginnings. There have been a number of technological developments and improvements in both the level of fidelity and the training effectiveness of flight simulators. As a result, flight simulators in use today are the result of this technological, psychological, and engineering evolution. Indeed, simulator cockpits can now accurately replicate all of the functions of flight controls and instrumentation found in real aircraft. Furthermore, the development of high- resolution display systems utilising computer-generated imagery (CGI), means that flight simulators can now display very realistic terrain and environmental effects. The high cost of modern full motion flight simulators (FFSs) has meant that their use has generally been restricted to commercial airlines, military forces, and government agencies. More recently, rapid advances and decreasing costs in PC-based computer technology has enabled flight-training organisations to conduct more training with less expensive fixed-base flight training devices (FTDs).

  • Roots Report: an Interview with Weird Al
Roots Report: An Interview with Weird Al Okee dokee folks… Almost exactly one year ago I saw Weird Al Yankovic at the Zeiterion in New Bedford. In all honesty it was one of the BEST shows I have EVER seen. It was fun, funny, energetic … basically AWESOME! I had a grin on my face the whole time. Weird Al is a comical/musical genius. I know a lot of you will scoff at this and probably think what he does is easy. It’s not, but he makes it seem that way as he effortlessly genre-shifts and works lyrical magic with the lampoons. Weird Al is bringing his Mandatory Fun Show to the Providence Performing Arts Center on September 14, and I had the opportunity to talk to him about his tour, music and upcoming show. Before I did the interview I asked folks on Facebook what they would like to know about Al, and I based my all of questions on those responses. John Fuzek: What was your favorite video to film? Weird Al: Probably “Tacky” (a parody of “Happy” by Pharrell Williams). It was also one of the easier videos to film because it was all done in one shot. Once we had the DP and the crew rehearsed, my celebrity friends came in. We told them where their marks were, everybody was professional and we knocked it out in a couple of hours. It was great. I got to work with some of the funniest people I know: Jack Black, Aisha Tyler, Kristen Schaal, Margaret Cho and Eric Stonestreet … you know, they’re in my address book.

  • The Italian Digital Classroom: Italian Culture and Literature Through Digital Tools and Social Media
The Italian Digital Classroom: Italian Culture and Literature through Digital Tools and Social Media 1. Using Video Games to Teach Italian Language and Culture: Useful, Effective, Feasible? Video games are a highly relevant part of life for our student population. According to the Pew Research Center (PRC, 2015), half of American adults play videogames, and 70% of college students play video games “at least once in a while” (Weaver).1 Some of the current commercial console and PC video games (some of which are also available on Mac, Android, and iOS) are digital, multi-media realia that can be used to enhance language acquisition both in and outside the classroom. The advantages of realia as a whole have already been extensively explored from a theoretical standpoint (Spurr; Dlaska). The advantages include development of specific personal interests in exploring, and therefore acquiring the foreign or second (F/L2) language and culture within a context. The ultimate goal of using realia is to turn students into life-long learners of the target language and culture. According to CALL research, digital realia, given their nature as multimedia, easily-accessible, persistent cultural artifacts, are particularly advantageous in reaching that goal (Smith). Compared to other digital realia, some specific video games add additional opportunities for language exploration. All such games, while similar in nature to movies (providing exposure to listening comprehension in the spoken dialogues and reading comprehension in the subtitles) also involve important additional features such as: writing and even speaking with other online users in the target language; direct interaction and agency, which improve learning skills (Deters et al.; Mitchell and Savill- Smith; Gee, What Video Games and “Good Video Games”); and critical thinking and problem-solving, which can be applied to physical group interaction in the classroom.

EVALUATING PLAYER IMMERSION IN SURVIVAL HORROR VIDEO GAME DESIGN A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF ARTS BY MELODIE GRIFFIN DR. JENNIFER PALILONIS - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA MAY 2019 EVALUATING PLAYER IMMERSION IN SURVIVAL HORROR VIDEO GAME DESIGN 1 ABSTRACT THESIS: Evaluating Player Immersion in Survival Horror Video Games STUDENT: Melodie Griffin DEGREE: Master of Arts COLLEGE: College of Communication, Information, Media DATE: May 2019 PAGES: 66 While survival horror video games develop at a rapid pace, a gap in user experience research continues to widen alongside their development. More specifically, this study seeks to understand how perspective and narrative affect player immersion in survival horror video games by performing a comparative study of player experience during gameplay with and without virtual reality enhancement. By evaluating how players interact with the gameplay experience, this study will identify how differing player perspective provokes or affects player immersion. Based on these findings, this study recommends a less restrictive game structure that limits the use of narrative cutscenes, provides more than one way to complete game challenges/objectives, and allows for virtual reality enhancement options. EVALUATING PLAYER IMMERSION IN SURVIVAL HORROR VIDEO GAME DESIGN 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I’d like to express sincere gratitude to my advisor, mentor, and friend-- Dr. Jennifer Palilonis. My thesis committee Dr. Johnny Sparks and Dr. Tim Huang also deserve my gratitude. In addition, a great many thanks goes to the Emerging Media Design and Development faculty and students. Their support and kindness has strengthened my research.
