50Th Anniversary of Kennedy's Berlin Speech: Berlin Meets Washington
50th Anniversary of Kennedy's Berlin Speech: Berlin Meets Washington Berlin/Washington, June 25, 2013 "Ich bin ein Berliner". These are the words most remembered from the famous speech given by President John F. Kennedy in Berlin 50 years ago on June 26, 1963. To commemorate this important anniversary, the German capital will be in Washington on June 26–27, 2013 to reintroduce itself to the people of America. President Barack Obama gave a speech at the Brandenburg Gate a week ago on June 19 during his visit to Berlin, citing Kennedy's significant words. The focus of the Washington trip is not only to commemorate Kennedy, but also to present Berlin as a hub for tourism and conventions in the heart of Europe, and as Europe's center of innovation. The delegation representing the city of Berlin on the Washington trip includes the Senator for the Interior Affairs and Mayor Frank Henkel and the CEO of visitBerlin, Burkhard Kieker. Frank Henkel, Senator for the Interior Affairs, Sports and Mayor, remarks: "For me, an important aim of this trip to Washington is to honor the great President John F. Kennedy and to remember his legendary speech in Berlin 50 years ago. With his visit to our divided city and his commitment, Kennedy was making much more than just a polite gesture. His words demonstrated an unprecedented level of respect for the people of West and East Berlin's unfaltering desire to be free. We Berliners in particular have a lot to thank the Americans for. The foundations of our nations' deep and steadfast friendship can be found in Berlin and were laid by President Kennedy." "Berlin owes many thanks to John F. -

KENNEDYAND BERLIN by Nicholas Labinski A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Milwaukee, Wisconsin August 2011 ABSTRACT EVOLUTION OF A PRESIDENT: JOHN F. KENNEDYAND BERLIN Nicholas Labinski Marquette University, 2011 This paper examines John F. Kennedy’s rhetoric concerning the Berlin Crisis (1961-1963). Three major speeches are analyzed: Kennedy’s Radio and Television Report to the American People on the Berlin Crisis , the Address at Rudolph Wilde Platz and the Address at the Free University. The study interrogates the rhetorical strategies implemented by Kennedy in confronting Khrushchev over the explosive situation in Berlin. The paper attempts to answer the following research questions: What is the historical context that helped frame the rhetorical situation Kennedy faced? What rhetorical strategies and tactics did Kennedy employ in these speeches? How might Kennedy's speeches extend our understanding of presidential public address? What is the impact of Kennedy's speeches on U.S. German relations and the development of U.S. and German Policy? What implications might these speeches have for the study and execution of presidential power and international diplomacy? Using a historical-rhetorical methodology that incorporates the historical circumstances surrounding the crisis into the analysis, this examination of Kennedy’s rhetoric reveals his evolution concerning Berlin and his Cold War strategy. -

Kennedy Library Foundation today announced that Elazar Cramer, a senior at the Maimonides School in Brookline, Massachusetts, has won the national John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest for High School Students. The winning essay describes the political courage of Edith Nourse Rogers, a Republican US Representative from Massachusetts who believed it was imperative for the United States to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Nazi Germany. She defied powerful anti-immigrant groups, prevailing public opinion, and the US government’s isolationist policies to propose legislation which would increase the number of German-Jewish refugee children allowed to enter the United States. Cramer will be honored at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum on May 19, 2019, and will receive a $10,000 scholarship award. The first-place winner will also be a guest at the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation’s May Dinner at which Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, will receive the 2019 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. Pelosi is being honored for putting the national interest above her party’s interest to expand access to health care for all Americans and then, against a wave of political attacks, leading the effort to retake the majority and elect the most diverse Congress in our nation’s history. -

Hofstra University Model United Nations Conference
Hofstra University Model United Nations Conference EXCOMM October, 1962 Crisis Committee Timothy Lachapelle Chairperson 1 Letter from the Chair Dear Delegates, Welcome to Hofstra Model United Nations, and the West Wing Crisis Committee. My name is Tim Lachapelle. I worked on the staff of the first HMUNC Crisis Committee, which re-created the West Wing in the post 9/11 Era. After two days of fast paced debate, and constant threat of nuclear Armageddon, the Hofstra Model UN club quickly discovered that the HMUNC delegates were up to any challenge that we throw at them. This year we are presenting another historical crisis scenario. In this committee you will all be acting as members of the Oval Office during the JFK era. The leaders of the nation are faced with many challenges during his presidency and this committee will be responsible for managing two potential crises: the first is the threat of Soviet missiles off the coast of Florida; the second is the constant threat of an attempt on the President’s life. Although this committee will rely on historical fact to solve these crises, the events will not play out exactly as they did in the history books. Some events or people involved may change depending on how the committee resolves each issue. I am currently a sophomore at Hofstra University, studying Political Science. I have been doing Model United Nations for one year. My first Model UN conference was at the University of Pennsylvania and I represented Iran in the World Health Organization. I discovered a passion for crisis committees when I worked on the staff of the crisis committee during the first Model UN conference ever hosted by Hofstra University.
