    REN HANG WHAT WE DO IS SECRET JUNE 18 – JULY 23, 2016 MAMA Gallery is proud to present What We Do Is Secret, Beijing-based artist Ren Hang’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and his first in Los Angeles. In the face of censorship and social restraints, Hang intuitively creates moments of uninhibited liberty through nude human sculpture. Considered one of the most provocative photographers today, Hang’s work can be considered overtly explicit, emotional, beautiful, funny, and grotesque, all at the same time. While Hang’s public demeanor understates any political significance in his work, Hang’s carefully directed images may suggest otherwise. Hang’s perspective of contemporary youth within China’s climate of economic, cultural and social upheaval serves as a strong case for freedom of expression under any circumstance. Perhaps inadvertently, Hang’s subject matter and seemingly simple technique have transcendent ramifications. His subjects project an irreverence that directly disrupts the restrictive realm of heteronormativity and presents alternate sexual and aesthetic realities. The title of Hang’s exhibition, What We Do Is Secret, references the music of punk band the Germs, which aligns with the provocative spirit of the artist’s images. Antagonism abounds in Hang’s work with a counterculture-fueled rebellion lying at its core. Ren Hang was born in Changchun, China in 1987. He currently lives and works in Beijing, China.     Paris Photo 2017 JIANG PENGYI JIANG ZHI MO YI REN HANG HAO JINGBAN 9-12.11.2017 Booth: B34 Jiang Pengyi (b. 1977, Yuanjiang, Hunan, China) Jiang Pengyi graduated from the Beijing Institute of Art and Design in 1999 and the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou in 2014. Jiang is an artist who constantly innovates with the infinitely generative potentialities of the photographic medium. His recent artistic evolution has taken him from digital photography to the experimentation with the materiality of photographic film, from the exteriority of excessive urbanization to the interiority of human existence and sexuality. With the use of cameraless analogue technique, traditional darkroom processes, and the application of instant film materials and found images, Jiang creates large-scale abstracts works and unique sculpturesque instant- film objects. Jiang has been awarded the Aletti ArtVerona Prize for Photography in 2011, the Jury Grand Prize from the Société Générale Chinese Art Awards in 2010 and the Tierney Fellowship Award from the First Annual Three Shadows Photography Award in 2009. Jiang was invited to participate in the Helsinki Photography Biennial 2012 and was nominated for the Prix Pictet 2012. Galerie Paris-Beijing is very proud to host the curator of CIFA-China Independent Film Archive for the video part of the exhibition. Among the photographic works, the selection of which was conceived by Romain Degoul, the gallery’s Gao Brothers: since the 1980s, the two brothers have been practicing politi- cal satire through their pieces, which has brought them under close surveillance. Two guards are regularly posted at the entrance of their studio. The photograph Now-ing, by Chi Peng was censured right in the middle of the SH Contemporary fair in Shanghai, where the gallerist initially had to cover the work with a sheet before removing it… only to sell it to the censor’s friend, who was amused by the whole polemic! Such are the anecdotes that we recount through the exhibition.

    Ren Hang (1987 – 2017) The late Ren Hang used the photographic medium to depict scenes of spontaneity, where the young naked subjects are staged in explicit poses. Ren carefully choreographed the compositional arrangement, iconic make-up (e.g. red lips and red finger nails) and mise-en-scène, all of which straddle between meticulous intentionality and momentary inspiration. Despite the playful and colourful scenes filled with young and beautiful bodies, his images portray certain human conditions filled with loneliness and vulnerability. Ren was awarded the Outset | Unseen Exhibition Fund at Unseen, Amsterdam in 2016 and Third Terna Contemporary Art Award, Italy in 2010.     Ren Hang: Athens Love March 24 – April 23, 2016 Opening reception: March 24, 6 - 8 PM Klein Sun Gallery is pleased to announce “Athens Love,” a solo photography show by Beijing-based artist Ren Hang, on view from March 24 through April 30, 2016. Ren is a poet and photographer. Splicing imagery of urban and rural environments as a metaphor for the increasingly citified millennials of today, he arranges the naked limbs of his friends in his hide-and-seek photographs. In these images, the subjects’ expressions are casual yet provocative, hinting at the erotic and playful energies between Ren Hang and his intimate circle of companions. “Athens Love” consists of snapshots Ren Hang took in Athens and other parts of Attica, Greece, during an artist residency in April, 2015. The images evoke faded memories of escapades with friends and lovers against the saturated backdrop of the Mediterranean. An incandescent face rises from a tumble of long black hair, bordered by a blue sky and sea; protruding genitals cheekily reflect the surrounding natural landscape. Linking these images is a narrative Ren Hang subtly pursues in all his work, in which man and nature each react to the other’s magic. Ren Hang was born in 1987 in Jilin, China. To say that he is not politically active is a bit disingenuous within the frameworK of his production. It is as if to say, he wants to push the boundaries of how we looK at his desire and the naked Chinese form without enmity. This seems a bit hopeful given the current mood of Chinese government suppression. To act out of one’s desire that has been purposefully cloaked under ideology is in fact a direct transgression against the state. This will liKely have a further consequence to Hang’s life and worK as his aesthetic and worK travels globally. I would expect we will see some control apparatus to further intervene at some point. It’s easy to sit here from the west and champion his worK.

This is eVer more so during a global pandemic endured with practices of social distancing, quarantine and isolation. On closeness, Robert Carpa famously said, “If your pictures aren’t good enough, you didn’t get close enough.” The insistence on proximity is nonetheless qualified by “enough”, an intuitiVe call on the material space, relational dynamic and affectiVe state of the situation. Centred around the play of distance, Closer is a group exhibition featuring nine living and late artists who work with an expanded field of portrait photography in different eras. Artists critically mediate their physical and psychological distance with subjects and sitters. For distance, now more than eVer, is a gesture of care. Some portraits show intimate relationships that condense the corporeal and emotional distance between sitter and photographer. Eros and Thanatos undergo a tender transformation in Nobuyoshi Araki’s Sentimental / Winter Journey (1970-1990). This iconic series starts with the honeymoon journey of the photographer and his wife Yoko in 1970, and ends with Yoko’s struggle with oVarian cancer and eVentual passing in 1990.
