Report for 2016 Annual Convention Canadian Southern Baptist Seminary & College • President • Rob Blackaby
Report for 2016 Annual Convention Canadian Southern Baptist Seminary & College • President • Rob Blackaby Introduction In recent years I have been reflecting afresh on what it means to be a Christian leader in today’s cultural context. To get that right will dramatically influence how we function as a theological school in Canada today. To get that wrong will result in our school being swept up in confusion and chaos as we rage against the winds of societal change and shifting cultural values. There is no greater calling in this life than to be a child of God. Everything else we will ever do of any worth hinges on our commitment to this. Every choice we make matters, because it is always part of a sweeping set of choices that will either lead us closer to Christ (and therefore into deeper fellowship with Him, acquaintance with His Word, affection for His people, and identification with His purposes) or further from Him (and therefore into the shallows of human existence and selfish indulgence). In light of this, Jesus’ difficult words in Luke 17:1ff are searching with regards to obedience in the life of a disciple. We say that we exist to train God-called men and women for twenty-first century leadership in tough places. We say this knowing that the fulfillment of such a vision will cost us much! We seek to live our lives in such a way that at the end of it we can say with integrity, “I am an unworthy servant; I have only done my duty.” If that is to be the case, we need daily to put into practice three critical and counter-cultural lessons. -

The Future of Southern Baptists As Evangelicals
The Future of Southern Baptists as Evangelicals by Steve W. Lemke Provost, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary for the Maintaining Baptist Distinctives Conference Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary April 2005 Introduction What is the future of Southern Baptists as evangelical Christians? In order to address adequately my assigned topic, I must attempt to answer two questions. First, do Southern Baptists have a future? And second, what future do Southern Baptists have as evangelicals? However, because Southern Baptists have been increasingly engaged in the evangelical world, these two questions are bound inextricably together. I believe that the major issues that will help shape the future of the Southern Baptist Convention arise in large measure from our interface with other evangelical Christian groups over the past few decades. In this presentation, I’ll be suggesting six issues that I believe will play a large role in the future shape of the Southern Baptist Convention. After I describe why I think these issues are so important to the future of Southern Baptist life, I’ll make a prediction or warning about how I’m guessing Southern Baptists will address these issues in the next couple of decades unless something changes dramatically. Let me begin with a few caveats. First, my purpose: I offer this talk as neither a sermon nor as a typical research paper, but my purpose is primarily to spur discussion and dialogue as we seek to address these issues together. Perhaps these ruminations will spark or provoke a helpful dialogue afterward. Second, the spirit with I which present this paper: I am writing from an unapologetically Southern Baptist perspective. -

FRIESEN ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA MAY 2015 2 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Above all, I would like to give thanks to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. In the process of this research my relationship with you went to a new level. I’m so glad that together we accomplished this work for Your kingdom. This research was only accomplished due to the support and love of some key individuals. I’m grateful to you all. I want to give my deepest thanks to my best friend and my biggest support, my wife Krista. Along with my daughters Tianna and Tiegan, they have helped me and put up with me through the process of this education. I can’t thank you enough, but I will never stop trying. I also wish to express deep gratitude to Dr. Wilbur Stone for believing in me as a student, but also as a fellow worker in the Kingdom we serve. Without your belief in me, I could not have accomplished this journey. You are a change agent and I am proof. My deepest appreciation also goes to Dr. Sam Rima for being one of the greatest educational facilitators from whom I have had the pleasure to learn. Your deep commitment to innovation has caused me to research this project in order to change the direction of the church globally. -

The Legacy of ACOP
The Legacy of ACOP “Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.” – Sir Winston Churchill “Why study history? Unlike physics or economics, history is not a means for making accurate predictions. We study history not to know the future but to widen our horizons, to understand that our present situation is neither natural nor inevitable, and that we consequently have many more possibilities before us than we can imagine.” Yuval Noah Harari – A Brief History of Mankind Introduction: Is the statement ‘The Twin Towers fell down on 9/11 because of gravity’, true or false? The correct answer is that it is true. While this statement is technically true, it explains nothing of any significance about the tragic events of that day. Nor does it adequately address the factors such as American foreign policy or the rise of militant Islam and other factors which provide the historic context for that moment in time.1 Understanding the historic context of events such as 9/11 gives us greater insight into why these events transpired, and what significance they have for us. I. The Legacy of ACOP Course will: • Explore the historical and theological context that gave rise to the modern Pentecostal movement, and in particular the Apostolic Church of Pentecost of Canada. • Examine the development of ACOP from a local church revival to a global movement of more that 1400 churches. • Inform ministers and members alike of the rich spiritual legacy they have received, through the Apostolic Church of Pentecost. 1 This question originated with Carl Trueman in The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self P a g e | 2 II. -
Muted Mission: an Interpretive Historical Essay on the Impact Of
Muted Mission: An Interpretive Historical Essay on the Impact of Baptists in Western Canada Axel Schoeber, PhD Associate Professor of Supervised Ministry Carey Theological College Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Presented to the Baptist Heritage and Identity Commission, Baptist World Alliance General Council, Meeting in Vancouver, Canada July 6, 2016 Schoeber 2 Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam, Where the deer and the antelope play, Where seldom is heard a discouraging word, And the skies are not cloudy all day. People in Victoria, the western-most provincial capital in Canada, love to publicize their flower counts in February each year while reminding other Canadians of the wintry weather they still endure.1 The count runs into the billions. However, west coasters often neglect to mention the struggle of many with Seasonally Affective Disorder, in part the result of living with too little sunshine for too long. People on the Canadian Prairies could boast more that they often have beautiful winter sunshine. The skies are not cloudy all day. In the mid-nineteenth century there was rarely a discouraging word across the Canadian plains. Not only were there no Baptist business meetings yet, there were few people and few words of any kind in this vast expanse. The aboriginal community, though culturally very important, was not large in numbers. The deer, antelopes and bison roamed widely. Deer are abundant today too; especially noteworthy is the challenge they present to many urban centres in British Columbia. Beautiful animals, they also destroy food and flower gardens for frustrated homeowners. The bison are returning today. -
