ILLINOIS STATE Sincerely, I I Jazz Festival I I Tom Marko Director of Instrumental Jazz Studies Illinois State University I I School of Music I I I I THE PANTAGRAPH I CONCERT SESSIONS I I I I :I I I CONTEST ADJUDICATORS Illinois State University Jazz Ensemble II personnel Jerry Hoover, adjudicator Jerry Hoover is Director of Bands at Southwest Missouri State University, where he supervises a Trumpets I student offering of eighteen bands. He personally directs the Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, Jodi Lau Freshman Honor Band, several entertainment ensembles, the Bear Mania Basketball Band, and Laura Prather the 320-member Pride Marching Band. Noel Newport I Ryan Elliot After twenty years in the Missouri public schools (Cabool, Lebanon, and Jefferson City) where he developed award-winning concert, marching, and jazz bands, he accepted the band position at New Mexico State University where he remained for seven years. He has been in his present Trombones I I position at SMS since 1985. Mr. Hoover is past president of the Missouri Chapter of Phi Beta Mu Nick Benson Thomas Miles, piano and is the Music Director for the London-based "Youth Music of the World", overseeing New Mike Gallant Zach Ginder, bass Year's Day parades in London and Paris, and-the "Easter in Maastricht" Music Festival held each Ellen Skolar Scott Simon, percussion spring in The Netherlands. This January, he inducted into the Missouri Music Educators Hall Tony Hernandez Aaron Kavelman, drums of Fame.

Illinois State University Dave Huber, adjudicator Jazz Ensemble I personnel Dave Huber received his Bachelor's degree (Music Education) from Illinois State University in 1994 and his Master's degree (Music Education, jazz studies & technology-based instruction) Saxophones Trumpets from the University of Illinois in 1999. He has played bass with a variety of jazz greats over the Roberto Quinones- Alto Myles Singleton years including Buddy DeFranco, , Marvin Stamm and Dennis DeBlasio. A resident of Robert Rake- Alto Dan Hiles the Chicago-land area, Mr. Huber stays busy playing jazz throughout the city, teaching band at Oak Grove School (which feeds into Libertyville High School), and writing jazz charts for young Travis Thacker- Tenor Kyle Berens bands. Jason Augspurger- Tenor Zac Bailey 11 I Toby Thomas- Baritone Todd Kelly, adjudicator Dr. Todd Kelly is Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Jazz at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. Trombones Dr. Kelly teaches trumpet, directs the Bradley Jazz Ensembles and Jazz Combos, teaches Jazz Trevor Headrick ll I Improvisation, Secondary Music Methods, and serves as the advisor for the Music Business Justin Gund program. Under his direction, the jazz program has shown tremendous growth and now includes Ben Michael two big bands, two combos, a year - long Jazz Improvisation sequence, and Jazz Pedagogy Matt Kelm 11 I clinics three times per semester. The Bradley Jazz Ensemble has performed with such jazz artists as Mike Vax, Mike Lee, Matt Wilson, and Allen Vizzutti. During the summer of 2003, the llllnols State University group will perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Vocal Jazz Ensemble Encore! II I Kelly received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Montana, a Master of Nick Adomaitis Combo Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Northern Colorado, and the Doctor Niall Casserly Tim Reed, piano of Arts degree in trumpet performance from Ball State University. His principal teachers include Thomas Edwards Samantha Owens, bass II I Lido Vizzutti, Dr. Thomas Cook, William Pfund, Paul Everett, and Bill Adam. Zach Fosnaugh Mike Cole, drums Conner McGowan Roberto Quinones, sax Dr. Kelly currently maintains a busy performing schedule in the Central Illinois area as a member Molly Nixon of the Todd Kelly Jazz Quintet, Broadway Big Band, Peoria Symphony Orchestra, and as a John Shaffer Sound I freelance jazz and classical musician. He is also the musical director of the Central Illinois Jazz ,B.andi Shockency Carl Rupsis Orchestra, a big band comprised of twenty of the finest musicians from the central Illinois area. Ashley Smith Sara Smith Randall Reyman, adjudicator Tiffany Williams Randall Reyman is a trumpeter and composer/arranger who is very active in both the jazz and classical genres. As a classical performer, he has performed with the Illinois Symphony Orches­ I I FEATURED ARTISTS tra, Illinois Chamber Orchestra, Millikin/Decatur Symphony Orchestra, Brass Ensemble of Illinois, North Texas State Faculty Brass Quintet, and Illinois State Faculty Brass Quintet. Mr. Boitos is Professor of Music at Illinois State University, where he teaches Saxophone. Mr. Marko With Illinois State University Jazz Ensemble I earned his undergraduate degree in percussion performance from Washington State University in Pullman, WA and his Master of Music degree in Jazz performance from the University of South I I Florida in Tampa. Currently, he is completing the Doctor of Arts degree at the University of Brother John by Nick Brignola Northern Colorado. Tom has been a successful freelance musician in the Tampa Bay area, Myrtle Arranged by Maria Schneider Beach, South Carolina and Fort Collins/Denver, Colorado. In the summer of 2001, Tom was one Toby Thomas, Baritone Saxophone of 22 musicians invited from across the U.S. to participate in the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Academy I I with artistic director Christian McBride. The John Scofield Band I I Bret Peppo, vocal jazz director Featuring Andy Hess- Bass Bret Peppo is the Associate Director of Choral Activities at Illinois State University. Peppo re­ Avi Bortnick- Rhythm Guitar & Samplers ceived his Bachelors of Music in Vocal Music Education at Eastern Illinois University, and Masters Adam Deitch- Drums of Music from Illinois State University in Choral Conducting. Peppo has held positions as Assis­ I I tant Professor of Choral Music at Alderson-Broaddus College in West Virginia and held the position as director of the Old Gold Singers at the University of Iowa. At Illinois State University, Peppo conducts the award-winning vocal jazz ensemble Encore!.
