7:30 PM 47th Annual Jazz Weekend Concert ft. Terri Lyne Carrington Plachta Auditorium Share your experience on social media! #CMUJAZZWEEKEND Letter from the Director Dr. Eric Tucker Dear Jazz Weekend Participants and Guests,

On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students in the Central Michigan University School of Music, welcome! We’re glad you’re with us in Mount Pleasant for the 47th Annual Jazz Weekend.

We’re proud to serve our K-12 colleagues and their students by bringing them together with our faculty, CMU student musicians, outstanding visiting artists and clinicians, and the community at large for a weekend of learning and music making. The members of Phi Mu Alpha, with assistance from our collegiate chapters of Kappa Kappa Psi, Delta Omicron, Sigma Alpha Iota, and National Association for Music Education, have worked tirelessly to make this year’s festival a valuable experience for all. Please enjoy the many performances and clinics, including those featuring our guest artist Terri Lyne Carrington.

Each year the School of Music hosts over 8,000 K-12 students and teachers for special events like Jazz Weekend, including the CMU Honors Band and Orchestra, Choral/Vocal Day, Instrumental Workshop, and Summer Music Institute, as well as hosting solo and ensemble festivals, school music competitions, festivals, and conferences. I hope you’ll return for these or any of the many concerts and recitals that take place each week in the School of Music.

Have a wonderful time while you’re with us. We’re glad you’re here!

Best wishes,

Dr. Eric Tucker Director, School of Music Central Michigan University Letter from phi mu alpha sinfonia Welcome to the 47th Annual Jazz Weekend hosted by Central Michigan University's School of Music and the Nu Pi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. We are excited to have 66 high school jazz ensembles and combos in attendance for a weekend featuring CMU’s many jazz ensembles and amazing guest artist, Terri Lyne Carrington.

Since 1974, the Nu Pi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia has helped plan and host this event, giving local high school musicians the chance to compete with their peers from around the state, hone their skills as young jazz artists, and benefit from the musical and professional insights of a national-level performing guest.

Our thanks go to the Jazz Weekend Committee comprised of Kristin Pagels, Daniel Koefoed, Scott Topazi, and jazz faculty members: Professor Robbie Smith, Professor John Nichol, Dr. Robert Lindahl, and Dr. Andrew Spencer. Appreciation is also extended to CMU’s music organizations: Sigma Alpha Iota, Kappa Kappa Psi, Delta Omicron, NAfME, and ACDA for their volunteer work helping to run the festival.

We sincerely hope that students, band directors, family members, and friends enjoy their time at Jazz Weekend 2020 and Central Michigan University. We take pleasure in planning this event and look forward to hearing the many musical ambassadors from around our great state. We trust that your time at CMU will help expand your musical horizons with regards to jazz, a true American art form. Good luck to all our participants and thank you for attending the 47th Annual Jazz Weekend!
