THE DEFENDER I S S U E 9 4 – S E P T 2 0 1 8

INSIDE THIS ISSUE: The Chief’s Column — Contribution by James Brisbin with notes from CKAI Gathering 2 2019! Madam Arabella Kincaid of Kincaid Dear Members, Kinfolk and Friends, I would like to share some notes from James Brisbin about another clan we as the commu- President’s 3 nity of the Clan Kincaid Association International are associated with by history and family. While Message our association to many may viewed as a heritage community, I hope that it is also viewed as an extension of family. This information relates to our history as a clan, of which I am always excited to Membership 3 learn about. - Emily Silversparre, Communications Director Update

Clan Lennox -(with references from “This I’ll Defend” by Bill Kincaid) Embro Scottish 4 Festival, 13 October 1800 saw the marriage at Woodheadhouse (the Lennox family seat prior to building Lost and Found of Lennox Castle in 1841) near , , of John Kincaid of that Ilk and Cecilia Lennox, daughter of William Lennox of Woodhead. This was a second marriage for John whose first wife, WANTED— 5 Janet Landels, had died. This brought together the great houses of Kincaid and Lennox, Although Pipers & Orators, McMinnville Cecelia was never chief of the Lennox family—that title belonged to her older sister Margaret, who was known as ‘Dame Marjorie’. Margaret was unmarried and died in 1831. Games, This & That To this union was born a single son, John Lennox Kincaid, later assuming the name Lennox when he served heir to his aunt Margaret Lennox. He became head of both families, confusingly becoming Portland High- 6 land Games, known as John Lennox Kincaid Lennox. This combined leadership role first descended through his St. Andrews daughter Margaret, who died childless, and then through Cecilia Kincaid of Kincaid to her son Wil- liam George Peareth Kincaid of Kincaid who died in 1934 leaving two sons, William and Alwyne and three daughters, Florence, Violet and Bridget. Grandfather 7 In 1959, the , Sir Thomas Innis of Learney, decided that one person could Mountain, Wil- not be the Chief of two different clans. Accordingly, Alwyne was proclaimed Kincaid of Kincaid while liam H. Kincaid William retained the Lennox Chiefship.

On William’s death in 1969 the Chiefship of Lennox passed directly to his grandson, Denis Peareth Board Members 8 & Commissioners Lennox of that Ilk and then to his son Edward Hornell Lennox of that Ilk in 1990. On Alwyne’s death in 1983, the Chiefship of Kincaid passed to his niece, Madam Heather Veronica Kincaid of Kincaid Wee Shopper 9 who passed it upon her death in 1999 to her granddaughter, Madam Arabella Jane Kincaid of Kin- Order Form caid, daughter of the same Denis Peareth Hornell Lennox of that Ilk. This made brother and sister chiefs of two different Clans. Wee Shopper 10 The Clan Kincaid Association International had its birth in 1985 but for many years there was no Catalog Association. The official Constitution of the Clan Lennox Association was enshrined in May of 2017 bringing the new Association into existence. We are most happy with this great step on the part of Clan Lennox with our long intertwined relationship and wish for the new Association much success in the future as it grows and spreads pride in Scottish and family heritage among its

members worldwide. Hugh Kincaid’s Tent at Stone Mountain, Georgia welcomed the Clan Lennox Counselor, Neil Whitford in October of 2017 and again at Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina in July 2018. The Kincaid Tent at the Fergus, Ontario Scottish Festival welcomed Marcus Lennox, the High Commis- sioner for Canada and we look forward to a close working relationship at Scottish events in the fu- ture. P A G E 2 The Clan Kincaid Gathering 2019 - Accommodations and more!

Wow! What an event! Clan Kincaid hosted its tent at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games this past July. In addition to the normal hosting fun, it was a planning mission for the 2019 Clan Kincaid Gathering.

Co-Chairs, Hugh Kincaid and James Brisbin had the opportunity to meet with Games Officials to outline Honoured Clan Activities and Responsibilities of the honoured guest, Madam Arabella Kincaid of Kincaid. They also met with management and catering personnel of the Best Western Hotel in Banner Elk, North Carolina which will be hosting our Gala Dinner and will be providing limited rooms at discount prices to ear- ly registrants. Time was also spent checking out various possible venues for an informal “Meet and Greet” evening for our Clan.

Clan Kincaid will be The Honoured Clan in 2019. As such, Kincaids will lead the Parade of the Clans (which saw 118 Clans participate this year). It was an amazing experience and next year our Clan will blow away the parade when we take the lead with over 100 Kincaids dressed out in their beautiful , sashes and banners.

It is a pleasure to announce that a number of people have agreed to assist in ensuring a spectacular event. Kathi Kincaid will be providing lanyard name tags, Lance Knauss will be the Official Photographer, Emily Silversparre will be creating Gala Programmes, Patrick Kincaid is providing a return flight on South- west Airlines for some lucky early registrant, Barbara Kincaid is looking after gifts, Beverley Kincaid is assem- bling a “goodie bag” of Kincaid trappings, Annette is attending to finances, Eva Knight is assisting with accommodation arrangements and Karen Davis is organizing our tent decorations. We have also have sev- eral individuals who have come forward and pledged support in as yet undefined ways. If you have an idea for our 2019 Gathering or would like to contribute to its success, please contact either Hugh at ukin- [email protected] or James at [email protected]

Gala Dinner reservations arrangements will be announced in the December issue of “The Defender”. For right now, it is suggested that you start thinking about making arrangements for accommodations for next July. Festival activities will begin the evening of Thursday, July 11th and will end Sunday, July 14th. Our host hotel is the Best Western in Banner Elk, North Carolina. If you wish to avail yourself of their hospitality and be “local” to a couple of ‘Kincaid Events’ you can call the hotel (828) 898-4571 and make a reservation for the nights of July 11, 12, 13 or more if you wish. We are advised that the normal room rate is $180 but the rate for Kincaids is $157 per night. If you book at the Best Western – Banner Elk – Be sure to tell them you are with Clan Kincaid! You can check out their facilities on line at: https://www.bestwestern.com/en_US/book/hotels-in-banner-elk/best-western-mountain-lodge-at- banner-elk/propertyCode.34151.html

While there is no requirement to stay at the Best Western, we do recommend that you book your accommodations early. This year saw approximately 30,000 visitors to the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games so the demand for rooms will be high and those in the know will be booking very early.

Watch for the next issue of “The Defender” for more information and details for reserving your place at the Gala honouring our Chief, Madam Arabella Kincaid of Kincaid. In the meantime, you can check out the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games website and learn more about the exciting time that awaits your participation next July. Go to:

A Message from the President I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank our Clan Kincaid Commis- sioners who sponsor tents at Highland games throughout the United States and Canada. They are the ones who meet the public, advertise and promote Clan Kincaid Association International.

In addition, our Commissioners recruit most of our new members. This year an amend- ment to our Constitution has been approved by our membership that we all need to know about. In the past, Commissioners who qualify have their membership dues waived. The problem was determining who qualifies and who doesn’t. The amendment eliminates the complimentary dues for Commissioners, but increases the reimbursement for the expense of sponsoring a tent from fifty dollars ($50) to seventy-five ($75). We appreciate all the work Commissioners do for Clan Kincaid, and realize that in most cases their expenses far exceed the seventy- five dollar reimbursement. I also want to thank our Board of Officers for their guidance and support throughout the year.

Yours Aye, David R. Kincaid (M-73) New Members to Clan Kincaid Association International! We would like to welcome a number of new members to CKAI! We have had one fantastic year and I look forward to continued growth.

Please help Clan Kincaid continue to grow in numbers by sharing with all your family members, encourage them to become a member if they have not already done so. Application for membership can be found on the web page, printed off and sent in. Donna Knauss (L-113) - Membership Secretary Greetings from the Communication Director It is with a heavy heart that I report the passing of Patricia Thompson of Washington DC. She was a past newsletter editor and life member (L-053) of the Clan Kincaid Association International. Our hearts are with her daughter, Karen Thompson.

I invite all clans folk to please send me any articles, announcements, and photos that you would like to see in a future Defender issue. You can email me at Communica- [email protected].. Please reach out with any questions!

In kinship, Emily Silversparre (F-03) THE DEFENDER P A G E 4 Embro Scottish Festival Submitted by James Brisbin (L-091) Amidst a Province wide heat advisory forecasting a humidex reading of 42C (108F) for Canada Day – July 1st, the Clan Kincaid tent was set up between the MacRaes and Davidsons in the middle of a dozen other Clans. It was fortu- nate that there was a nice breeze which tempered the heat a little bit. Lots of water and some Scotch was consumed to keep cool.

All set up and ready to go by 8:30 AM as the first visitors of the day arrived. Being a smaller clan, not many Kincaids were expected but our tent was rewarded by the attendance of David Kincaid of Thamesford, Ontario who is a for- mer World Champion Base Drummer and is currently playing with the London, Ontario Firefighter Pipe Band.

Other treats included the visit of a half dozen Masonic Lodge Broth- ers and a family who proudly displayed a picture taken two years ago of the father having his head chopped off (figuratively, of course) on their Facebook page. The tent was also visited by a recent Romanian immigrant who was dubbed a Scot with the new of McDrac- ula!

The Embro Scottish Festival was breaking in a new venue on the grounds of Canada’s Outdoor Park outside Woodstock, Ontario. The new digs seemed to work out quite nicely. There was lots of space, some shade and ample parking for the several thousand who attend- ed the 81st renewal of this Festival. Along with the dancers, pipe bands, heavy events, and many other food and souvenir vendors, these games feature major competitions in Tug of Wars which gener- Brother Neil Dolson and David Kincaid ated a great deal of sweat in the heat.

Lost and Found - Submitted by Barbara Kincaid (M- 1179) Vintage photo discovered with a Kincaid link. If any of our members have a Creacer/Kincaid link in your genealogy you might like to have this photo for your family files. It would appear to be in a somewhat prairie state and is dated 1900. The notation on the back of the photo tells us about the horse, Charlie, and that "Grandpa Kincaid" was a "Baptist preacher". McMinnville Scottish Festival Submitted Charlene Kincaid Johnson (M-822)

1st Games “ever” In McMinnville, Oregon! The lovely campus of Linfield College became the site of the “McMinnville Scottish Festival”. McMinnville is located an hour’s drive from Portland, Oregon and the Oregon coastline – it’s settled in the Willamette Valley.

For two days Saturday June 9th and Sunday June 10th a wee bit of Scot- land was there among the beautiful trees and grassy fields. There were many athletic competitions, Clan tents, Bag piping and lots of great vendors. On Satur- day June 9th and Sunday June 10th Clan Kincaid Oregon was represented in the Parade of Clans. We had numerous Kincaid visitors to our tent. Roger Kincaid shared the Clan history to the delight of each visitor! Many of their questions were answered and the hunger to become Clan members was satisfied. This first- time event went smoothly for the two days and the event hosted 4,000 visitors. A Little Bit of This and That Jim, Charlene, and Gary

Kincaid Hotel, Uvalde USA- Karen Davis, Chief Commissioner (L-101)

The Kincaid Hotel situated in the Main Street area of Uvalde, Texas was built in 1927 by the family of Wil- liam Davis "Billy" Kincaid (1854-1914), as a memorial to the late Texas cattleman and founder of the Kincaid Ranch. The 20,000 square foot, four story building contained fifty-four guest rooms and featured a barber shop, beauty salon, candy store, dress shop, coffee shop, dining room and lobby. The hotel served as a social center and the lobby became a popular meeting place for ranchers to conduct livestock transactions. The Texas Historic Commission has designated it to be a his- toric building. Among the many dignitaries that have visited the hotel, Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson and Ronald Reagan are a few no- tables. The building has recently been renovated and now offers 42 studio apartments, retail space and office units, thereby saving a piece of local history. THE DEFENDER P A G E 6 Portland Highland Games Submitted Charlene Kincaid Johnson (M-822) On Saturday July 21 we represented Clan Kincaid at our local Portland, Oregon one-day Festival and Games. Saturday morning began rather chilly, as the day moved into afternoon we enjoyed a gorgeous sunny day! We are blessed to have Lance (Clan photographer) and Donna Knauss (Clan Membership Director) join us every year. Lance keeps his camera busy all day long! Donna has assisted in the tent and spent time with the local Clan cousins.

We had a steady flow of visitors into our tent. Many come back year to year. We have what is deemed to be our “Sir George” who is the hit of the day! He first attended last year, and he guards our tent! Unbeknownst to us, our friends brought Sir George last year and he sports a shield with KINCAID on it! He is a hit and many take pictures with him!

One Kincaid family sent their 7-year-old son ahead of them to our tent and he announced his visit by saying “I’m a Kincaid!” - he had to have a Grandmotherly hug and a welcome as our cousin. Our tent displays were built around our Clan at the 2017 Tattoo in . We enlarged sev- eral prize pictures for our tent display. The high- Charlene, “Sir George!”. And Jim light of our day was sharing that Madam Arabella is our Clan Chief and to also share about being an Honored Clan at the 2017 Tattoo in Edinburgh!!!

St. Andrews Society 169th Highland Games Submitted by Barbara Kincaid (M- 1179) On Saturday, August 4, 2018, as Michigan Commissioner I hosted a tent on Clan Row representing Clan Kincaid at the St. Andrews Society 169th Highland Games in Livonia, Michigan. These Games are held at historic Greenmead Park, which boasts beautiful grounds and plenty of space for many events. The ambiance is such that one feels that perhaps they are actually in Scotland, minus the mountains.

We had many visitors to our tent and shared our Kincaid history with them all. The Kirkin of the Tartan ceremony is al- ways meaningful and well attended. We have dear friends in the area who faithfully attend our Livonia Games each year. They tell us that Scots have so much fun that they wanted to look into their family genealogy, searching for Scottish roots. Which brings about the saying, “There are two kinds of people in the world—those who are Scottish and those who wish they were!”

We were cheered on in the Parade of on a very warm and humid day. I was grateful for the assistance given by his presence in having our Clan Kincaid President, David Kincaid, at the Games greeting people as well. (His other title is “Barbara’s Husband”.) My thanks to him for his participation and help. James Brisbin drove in from Ontario, Canada also that day so I had the unique distinction of having both our current President and our Past President at the Livonia Games. Thank you to James for his sto- ries, witticisms, humor and crowd pleaser antics.

Once again the William Kincaid Scholarship Program for High- land dancers and pipers was recognized at the Livonia/St. Andrews Games. William (L-003) lives in Michigan and visits our tent when he can and is also a member of St. Andrews Society and founded this worthy program to promote Scottish Arts with young people.

Several Clan Kincaid membership applications were distributed that day, as well as copies of The Defender, thus planting the seeds for potential members wanting to be part of our great Clan Kincaid. It’s always fun to see old friends from other clans at these Games. We visit and catch up on each clan’s latest news, we laugh and some share a “wee dram” or two. The camaraderie is much like a big family picnic or reunion and so Barbara & David Kincaid much enjoyed by all. THE DEFENDER Grandfather Mountain Games—Submitted by Hugh Kincaid (M-877) P A G E 7

July 12th through the 15th we hosted a Clan Kincaid tent at the Grandfa- ther Mountain Highland Games and Gathering of Scottish Clans in Linville, NC. This festival is the largest gathering of clans in the world and this year there were 118 represented. The weather was tremendous, probably the best for these games in several years! In re- sponse to such wonderful weather the visitors to the games set all time attendance rec- ords.

Along with record breaking for the games, we broke records for our clan association. James Brisbin and I were Julie & Zoe Rodriguez with Jason visited by many more Kincaids and related families than either & Isabella Lawrence & Hugh of us have ever experienced before. With so many interested cousins and James’ tutelage we added 11 new members to our clan association!! In addition to so many kin, we also had a long chat with Tom Burleson, the 7’2” former college and NBA basket- ball star center!

Along with highland dance and record breaking heavy athletic competition there were also sheep herding, wrestling for all ages, the Mountain Marathon from Boone, NC to Grandfa- ther Mountain, a five mile footrace called the Assault on the Mountain, Scottish music competi- tion, Celtic entertainers, a Scottish Country Dancing Gala, a torchlight ceremony and much more! It’s four days of grand Gaelic gratification!! Tom Burleson James and I used our “spare” time wisely meeting with Grandfather Mountain officials and making detailed preparations for next year’s games where Madam Arabella is the honored guest and we are the honored clan as well as our grand clan gathering.

William H. Kincaid Scholarship - Courtesy of James Brisbin (L-091) St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit William H. Kincaid is Life Member #3 of our Association. Bill was instrumental in the early formation of the Clan Kincaid Association (now International) back in 1985 and helped secure recognition and endorsement of our As- sociation by Madam Heather Veronica Kincaid of Kincaid, our current Chief’s grandmother. Bill has also been an active member and Past President (1991-1992) of the Detroit Chapter of the St. Andrew’s Society. In 1988 he chaired the St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit Scottish Games which are claimed to be the long- est running event in the United States. In recognition for his continuing support, The St. Andrew’s Society of De- troit annually awards The William H. Kincaid Scholarship. The St. Andrew’s Society provides the following information:

The William H. Kincaid Scottish Arts Scholarship program of the St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit provides modest, partial scholarships for beginning pipers, drummers, Highland dancers, harpists (clarsach), fiddlers, pianists, or other appropriate musical instruments to attend a summer Scottish Arts program of their choice in order to further their interest and improve their talent. In 2018, we granted 21 scholarships in dancing, piping, and fiddle. We distributed nearly $11,000.00 for these scholarships, which came from our 2017 Highland Games Raffle Sales which was designated for Schol- arships. The St. Andrew’s Society is very proud of its program of scholarships for students studying the Scottish Arts. All recipients are recommended by their instructors. No other program in the country can match our com- bination of the number of grants, amounts of the grants, and length of time the program has been in effect.

We are proud of Bill’s continuing interest in Clan Kincaid and in furthering the pride in Scottish heritage particularly in the young people who will be our leaders tomorrow. THE DEFENDER P A G E 8
