  • Wiltshire's Fun Facts • Did You Know Another Series of Poldark Is Being
Wiltshire’s Fun Facts Did you know another series of Poldark is being filmed this year at Great Chalfield Manor? Other filming includes The White Princess in Lacock and Bradford on Avon and Transformers at Stonehenge. Look out for Wiltshire on your TV/Cinema in 2017! Did you know that Wiltshire has a Grade II Listed Sticke tennis court at Hartham Park, Corsham? Did you know that the Wiltshire Cycleway, Regional Route 20, is 160 miles and takes in some of the county’s most spectacular scenery? It’s best to do in an anti-clockwise direction. There are also two National Cycle Routes passing through South Wiltshire, Numbers 24 and 45. In Cricklade, just off the high street, there is a sign that says “In 1832 on this spot nothing happened!” Wiltshire has some strange named places; Lover (pronounced Lowver), which is famous for its visits by romantics near Valentine’s Day; New Zealand which can be found just off the A3102 south of Lyneham; and Tiddleywink, which is situated just outside Castle Combe. The Kennet & Avon Canal is a total of 87 miles and links London with the Bristol Channel. The Caen Hill Locks are a flight of 29 locks between Rowde and Devizes with a rise of 1 in 44 gradient or 237 feet in 2 miles. Did you know that Salisbury (in 2012) and Chippenham (in 2016) have been awarded purple flag status, meaning that they offer a ‘gold standard’ night life with lower crime and anti-social behaviour? Did you know that Stonehenge attracts over 1.3m people of year? The massive sarsen stones came from Marlborough, 20 miles away, the smaller bluestones from the Preseli Mountains of South Wales, a distance of almost 200 miles.

This booklet represents the combined efforts of John Baxter who lives in Bradford on Avon and attends St. Nicholas Church and Linda Brooks who lives in Winsley. Our first port of call was the Winsley Memorial where, every November, we gather to honour the memory of those who died in all wars. Having started to investigate these special men who specifically died in World War 1, it was discovered that there were other memorials in the village. There is one in the Methodist Church which added a new name to our quest, whilst in the Social Club there is an Honours Board that commemorates all those who went to war from the village but had the fortune to survive it.

  • Uplands Cottage, Green Lane, Turleigh, Bradford-On-Avon, BA15 2HH
Uplands Cottage, Green Lane, Turleigh, Bradford-on-Avon, BA15 2HH. £700,000. Uplands Cottage is beautifully situated on Green Lane in Turleigh between Bradford-on-Avon & Winsley near Bath. The cottage offers flexible living spaces over two floors. The ground floor has a very attractive sitting room with dining area, fireplace & French windows to the terrace at the front of the house. Adjoining this is the smart kitchen creating a very sociable space for friends & family – the heart of the home I would suggest. We also find a good double bedroom & shower room as well as the welcoming entrance hall. Upstairs the accommodation is set around the fabulous drawing room with beamed ceiling, this leads out to the pretty garden & water feature via the conservatory. The generously proportioned master bedroom is triple aspect with a lovely window seat. Adjoining this is a large dressing room or study which might serve as a third bedroom occasionally or a nursery. Lastly there is second bathroom. The house is very smartly presented & enjoys a relaxing atmosphere & fine outlook. Externally is a generous plot. The garden to the immediate rear & side are formal cottage gardens with an orchard & useful timber outbuildings beyond. Surprisingly there is a strip of woodland through a gate beside the stone-built store at the top of the plot! There is driveway parking for two cars. Uplands Cottage seems to tick most boxes for discerning house hunters. One to view. Turleigh is a very popular village in the beautiful valley near Bradford-on-Avon & Winsley to the south east of the Georgian city of Bath.
