On pages 23 –24 we have notification from Council that the B3018 will be closed at the bottom of Winsley Hill from 22.00 hours on the night of Monday April 4th till 6.00 on Tuesday morning, April 5th, to allow inspection of the railway bridge. Anyone coming out of Bath that evening will have to use the A 363 – “Sally in the Wood”. I do not know what the buses will do. If you plan coming out by bus after 10.pm that night, you should probably check with the bus company. I hope they don’t find flaws in the bridge – or we might have to suffer longer disruption sometime in the future.

Next week – as I write – the clocks go forward, which I suppose is another sign that spring may finally have arrived. Longer light evenings are good, but for myself I love the six months (nearly) when I can actually get up in daylight – and find my slippers without having to put the light on!

We think we love spring, but it must have been even more welcome to our ancestors, who endured winter weather without some of our creature comforts.

Spring, the sweet spring, is the year’s pleasant king; Then blooms each thing; then maids dance in a ring; Cold doth not sting, the pretty birds do sing . . .

The palm and may make country houses gay, Lambs frisk and play . . .

The fields breathe sweet, the daisies kiss our feet, Young lovers meet, old wives a-sunning sit . . .

March was a busy month at Winsley Primary School. The younger children had a lovely time on their trip to Lackham to see the lambs, and even saw some being born. We all wore something red for Red Nose Day and raised some money for Comic Relief.

We have been active with sports, taking part in a tag rugby tournament, practicing for a gymnastics competition, and gearing up for the cricket season. We’ve also been creative: Year 5 took part in a massed choir singing a fantastic African vocal work called Zimbe at the Wiltshire Music Centre. In National Book Week we held a competition for the children to draw their favourite book characters, and a new after- school dance club has started up.

The wildlife area, comprising a pond, an area of grassland, a beech hedge and scattered trees, has been receiving some attention. Liz and Matt Johns and their team have been planting around the fences and putting up bird boxes. It will become a useful educational resource for the school and a valuable habitat. It is now so attractive to wildlife that we recently had an injured pheasant sheltering there. The children were concerned about her so we called the RSPCA who took her away to take care of her!

The Village Quiz in the school hall was enjoyed by all. Teams of school governors, staff and parents were joined by teams from the wider Winsley community.

Please put the date of the Summer Fete in your diary: Saturday 2 July, in the school grounds. 5 Winsley Parish Council

NOTICE OF MEETING

WINSLEY VILLAGE HALL ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Tuesday, 26 April, 2011 7.30 pm

Venue: Winsley Village Hall

Contact person: James Sherwin 01225 722113

WE ARE SURE MANY PEOPLE IN WINSLEY APPRECIATE THE ONGOING RENOVATION OF THE LOOSE STONE WALLING AT HARTLEY FARM ALLOTMENTS BY TONY GRIFFITH CONTRIBUTING TO THE ENHANCEMENT OF THE VILLAGE. THANK YOU TONY!

HELEN WHITE & EVELYN ALLEN Winsley & District Gardening Club 22 The speaker at the February meeting was the ever popular Chris Smith of Pennard Plants. Chris created his unique nursery in a Victorian walled garden in 2001 and now exhibits at horticultural shows all over the country, including Chelsea. He specialises in Agapanthus and unusual vegetables, especially potatoes, and runs courses in many aspects of sensible gardening. He managed to condense a one day course in vegetable growing into a fascinating hour and a quarter. In view of the new allotments in Winsley his common sense advice was timely and very welcome, but no less relevant to those of us with only a tub or two in which to ‘grow our own’.

Chris stressed that the growing of food should not be driven by economics but by the desire for really fresh products and being able to choose exactly what you like to eat. Supermarket apples may look fresh but could have been stored for up to a year and tomatoes are bred with thick skins so that they are not damaged in transit. The most important thing when growing vegetables is the quality of the soil which should incorporate as much organic matter as possible. He then listed a variety of ways of achieving the correct diet for di!erent vegetables – banana skins and wood ash provide potash, seaweed is slow acting and provides lots of trace elements. He also suggested spraying ‘chitting’ potatoes with seaweed extract to keep them plump and to give them a good start. Well fed plants have more resistance to pests and diseases.

He summed up by saying the best thing if you have limited space is to grow things you can’t buy, to only grow small quantities (succession sowing), and to grow old varieties which may not yield as heavily but have more $avour. Members took advantage of the selection of seed potatoes and onion sets as well as a huge variety of seeds which were on sale and which hopefully will produce lots of entries for the 50th Flower and vegetable Show in September.

There are still some places left on the all day outing to Waterperry Gardens in Oxfordshire on Tuesday 14th June. The cost of coach travel and entrance is only £20.00 for members and £22.00 for non-members. Telephone Phil Turk on 722890 to book a place. 21 Winsley Circle of Friends. Heather Pugh has obviously inherited her mother, Edna Brown’s talent for producing beautiful craftwork. Heather went on a weekend course to learn about fused glasswork. Her husband bought her a kiln and soon a hobby became a business. Shortage of time after 2 business meetings meant she had to canter through explaining the different types of glass used and stages of fixing and firing, usually 4 times, and a fascinated audience saw how even tiny pieces of glass can be used for decorating.

The end results shown in a lovely display of. Let’s get our heads together for revision

With barely two months until the full GCSE / A level exam season and many pupils taking modules in year 10, it is a good time to give some thought to revising! Just where to start and how to make manageable the mountain of learning over the past two years though …

In the spirit of “everyone needs a little help, sometime”, local maths tutor, Robert Beesley has organized an evening of Top Tips for Revision. Whilst focusing on maths, he will give time planning ideas, scheduling outlines and advice based on his experience as a tutor and exam / coursework marker.

This event runs on Monday 4th April, 7.30pm at Bearfield Church, Huntingdon Street (near the new Co-Op). The first 50 mins on study preparation and exam revision tips and the second 50, specifically on maths GCSE / A level and statistics GCSE revision. The cost is £5 per family.
