A great leader both in physical and in psychic science In token of respect This work is dedicated PREFACE This work has grown from small disconnected chapters into a narrative which covers in a way the whole history of the Spiritualistic movement. This genesis needs some little explanation. I had written certain studies with no particular ulterior object save to gain myself, and to pass on to others, a clear view of what seemed to me to be important episodes in the modern spiritual development of the human race. These included the chapters on Swedenborg, on Irving, on A. J. Davis, on the Hydesville incident, on the history of the Fox sisters, on the Eddys and on the life of D. D. Home. These were all done before it was suggested to my mind that I had already gone some distance in doing a fuller history of the Spiritualistic movement than had hitherto seen the light - a history which would have the advantage of being written from the inside and with intimate personal knowledge of those factors which are characteristic of this modern development. It is indeed curious that this movement, which many of us regard as the most important in the history of the world since the Christ episode, has never had a historian from those who were within it, and who had large personal experience of its development. -

Doctor Justinus Kerner and the Seeress of Prevorst: A case of “psychotherapy” in the first half of the 19th century ABSTRACT Key words This paper aims to analyze the clinical practice carried out by Dr. Justinus Kerner (1786-1862) on the Psychoterapy, so-called Seeress of Prevorst (1801-1829). We consider it as an informal psychological practice within Kerner, a context of romantic medicine and spiritist ideas. In fact, it was an antecedent of later spiritism and spiritism, technologies of the Self it involved an implicit psychological system with its own definition of subjectivity. -

This is especially interesting, because in this case we are dealing with the fact the same way as in the Victorian age, people use technical advances to reinforce their convictions on the existence of life beyond life. In this sense one important task is to realize the role of technological gears in supporting this kind of shared rationality. Unexpectedly, science has not undermined supernatural thought but it has served for reinforcing it. It looks like the more advanced the civilization the more possibilities it turns into the search of alternative and extravagant conceptions of the world. Wood Theodora’s Prophetic Revelation The Open Biographical Secrets of Rudolf Steiner’s Drama Characters, Part II The present text is a continuation of the research approach followed in our earlier article “The Course of Dr. Strader’s Life”. It seeks to uncover the identity of the real-life historical personality behind Rudolf Steiner’s drama character of the seeress Theodora.1 This character is in turn a metamorphosis of the figure of the Hawk in Goethe’s Fairy Tale. Both Theodora and the Hawk unite in themselves two events: they reflect the final glow of a past epoch before catching the first rays of a newly dawning day. Spiritual Realism Steiner’s very first idea for a theatre play in Munich in the summer of 1910 was not to perform a mystery drama of his own composition, but a dramatized version of Goethe’s Fairy Tale of the Green Snake and Beautiful Lily. However, the project ran into difficulties. The fairy tale images that were suitable for Goethe’s epoch had to be metamorphosed and rendered more realistic in Steiner’s time: “It did not work. One had to conceive it in a much more realistic manner. And out of this there arose the Portal of Initiation. It is obvious: during Goethe’s time the epoch had not yet arrived in which one could carry over what could be seized in fine fairy tale images into the real figures that are in the Portal of Initiation.”2 Steiner designated the art of this first drama as “spiritual realism”, because it sought to depict in an artistic manner real spiritual experiences: “It is carried out with a certain aesthetic feeling, everything in it is spiritual-realistic. -

A large audience has filled to capacity the auditorium at the world famous Chesterfield Spiritualist Camp in the State of Indiana, America. They have come to witness a demonstration of psychic power, one of the most unique and marvellous in the entire world. A select committee has arranged beforehand that upon entering the building, all have been given a numbered ticket, the stub of which is torn off and put into a large vat to be thoroughly mixed up; later on, one stub will be randomly drawn from the collection. Now, after a close examination by the committee to see that there are no markings or paint of any kind, or signs of chemical treatment, a large plain canvas is placed on an easel in the centre of the stage. The spirit mediums who will demonstrate the phenomena now enter the auditorium, they are sisters and appear to be about 35 to 40 years of age. Both take their seats on the rostrum, one situated on each side of the easel and clearly four to five feet from it; they will never touch the canvas throughout the entire demonstration. A member of the committee now reaches in and selects from the vat one ticket stub and reads the number aloud to the audience; it belongs to a Mrs Alice Alford. Mrs Alford and her husband are now invited to come up and take a seat on the stage; they will be sitting for a portrait but in this particular instance the painting will not be of the Alfords; the artist and the subject of this session are from another dimension; the world of Spirits. -

Ecstatic Space NEO-KUT and Shamanic Technologies A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Haein Song Department of Arts and Humanities College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences Brunel University, London May 2018 Abstract The present thesis formulates an approach towards ecstatic space in the context of a combined performance of kut, a Korean shamanic performance ritual, and digital practices. Here, the coined term, ecstatic space, is not confined to the mental state or spiritual sphere of shamans in a trance but indicates an alternative and metaphoric environment mediatised by ecstatic technology – a vehicle for conjuring the mythical worlds of kut via shamanic media including divine objects, dancing and singing rituals. This research also adopts digital technology, a modern approach for accessing imaginary virtual space through digital media, especially technical images – the technologically produced and programmed/computational images. Ecstatic space enables the creation of interstitial and fecund space situated between performer/audience reality and imaginary spheres, representing the technological aesthetics in- between kut and digital performance. This enabling is theoretically and historically grounded in media and performance/ritual frameworks that are explored in the early chapters of the thesis. Ecstatic space contextualises through the careful exposition of Korean scholarship on kut, and shamanic performance rituals read and interpreted alongside international performance/cultural studies and media theories including Vilém Flusser, Marshall McLuhan, Guy Debord, Roy Ascott and others. My methodologies of creating ecstatic space are formulated by investigating the artistic potential of an interpenetrative relationship between these two technologies. The five core SUI (Shamanic User Interface) designs of kut are identified to outline an embodied understanding of the ecstatic technology. -

Il Caso Della Veggente Di Prevorst
Francesco Lamendola Leggere con lo stomaco, vedere gli spiriti: il caso della veggente di Prevorst Uno dei libri del paranormale che ebbero più larga diffusione nel XIX secolo, affascinando migliaia di lettori e suscitando accese discussioni, fu Die Seherin von Prevorst del dottor Justinus A. C. Kerner, dedicato a un caso notevolissimo di facoltà chiaroveggenti e medianiche, da parte di un soggetto femminile altamente sensitivo. Fu un'opera che fece epoca, spingendo il pubblico delle persone colte a prendere posizione pro o contro la veridicità degli straordinari fenomeni in esso riferiti con abbondanza di particolari. Poi, dopo alcuni decenni di appassionati dibattiti, l'interesse per quel «caso» andò gradualmente smorzandosi e alcuni studiosi del paranormale, che inizialmente si erano mostrati possibilisti sulla serietà di esso, finirono per bollarlo come un gigantesca cantonata, e vi misero una pietra sopra. Ma chi era Justinus Kerner? Si trattava di un medico tedesco dalle idee piuttosto eterodosse, che passava per un eccentrico, forse anche per la sua passione di comporre canzoni e scrivere poesie. Simili attitudini non erano particolarmente apprezzate dalla maggior parte dei suoi sussiegosi colleghi; né la società tedesca dei primi decenni dell'Ottocento era l'ambiente più idoneo per apprezzare una visione spregiudicata della medicina, e in genere della scienza, com'era la sua. Possiamo bene immaginare che la pedanteria professorale doveva essere la regola, piuttosto che l'eccezione; e che uomini di scienza liberi da pregiudizi accademici, come lo era Kerner, costituivano delle vere e proprie mosche bianche. Nel 1826, Kerner aveva quarant'anni ed esercitava a professione medica a Weisberg, nei pressi di Heilbronn, circa a metà strada fra Heidelberg e Stoccarda. -

From Decadent Diabolist to Roman Catholic Demonologist: Some Biographical Curiosities from Montague Summers’ Black Folio Bernard Doherty Introduction The history and practice of black magic, witchcraft, and Satanism have long held a deep fascination in British—and indeed international—popular culture. Beginning with the gothic literature of the eighteenth century, through to the nineteenth century occult revival and Victorian “penny dreadful,” and then into twentieth century pulp fiction, tales of the supernatural involving maleficent magic have been authored some of Britain’s most popular—if not always critically acclaimed—writers including, among others M. R. James, Arthur Machen, William Somerset Maugham, Agatha Christie, Charles Williams, and Dennis Wheatley. These writers, as well as various other short story writers, novelists, and journalists, have all played an important role in shaping, recording, and reflecting popular beliefs about these topics. Indeed, not a few occult practitioners, most notably Aleister Crowley, Dion Fortune, Gerald Gardner, and Doreen Valiente, even turned their hands to writing popular occult fiction. Wilderness House Literary Review 16/2 Sharon DeBartolo Carmack © 2021 The Victorian Séance Comes to England “Mrs. Hayden was something of a fraud,” the tour guide said with a smirk. “No she wasn’t.” I swear, the words were meant to be a stage whisper to my husband, but they somehow projected into the room. With all eyes upon me, I added, “I’m Maria Hayden’s biographer, and she wasn’t a fraud.” I discovered something about being a biographer in that moment. A biographer will counter any falsehood about her subject as fiercely as a defense attorney. ^ We hadn’t planned on visiting Knebworth House during our brief time in England. I didn’t know the house still existed and was open to the pub- lic. As we made our way along the M11 from London to Cambridge, I saw the exit sign announcing Knebworth House, 66 kilometers. I turned to my husband and said, “That’s where Maria conducted her first séance for Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton in 1852. We have to go there.” I’d been working on her biography for the past three years. Sir Edward, owner of Knebworth House, is perhaps best known today for the opening line, “It was a dark and stormy night” and the oft-quoted, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” A highly regarded and prolific writ- er in his day, whose book sales rivaled his friend Charles Dickens, Lytton published two dozen best-selling novels, nine plays, fifteen volumes of poetry, and four volumes of essays. After we settled into our B&B in Cambridge, I opened my laptop and Googled the house, only to discover it was off season and closed—except on the weekends starting in May.
