3 thelearningpartnership.ca Akela Peoples, Michael Coté, SVP and CCO, President and CEO Purolator Inc. The Learning Partnership Chair, Board of Directors The Learning Partnership Message from the President and Chair

This past year has been eventful, fast-paced and an exciting one at The Learning Partnership. Eventful, because in 2013 we reached one of our signifi cant milestones - celebrating 20 years of building learning partnerships across Canada. Fast-paced, because the momentum of outreach across Canada continues to surge ahead to make our schools great places to learn. Exciting, because building on our rich and inspiring history, and honouring our past, we look to the future with a refreshed eye – launching a new logo, new website, and building new collaborations that are already delivering great synergies. Canada’s public education system enviably ranks as one of the top ten in the world. For this, we take pride in being Canadian citizens. We are grateful for inheriting a solid foundation on which we can build a continuing bright future for Canada. But, this is a moving target that requires that we stay vigilant, focused and forward-looking. Global pressures demand that Canada stays competitive. What better way to do this than by building strong bridges between business and education? We must ensure our children are skilled and fully prepared for a fast-changing, interconnected and complex world. We must ensure also that our children embrace healthy attitudes to lifelong learning and see its tremendous value in their own lives, their communities and in Canada’s future. With the respect and trust earned from government, business and education partners, The Learning Partnership continues to build results-driven collaborations that focus on fi ve key deliverables: 1) Student Programs 2) Educator Programs and Executive Leadership 3) Building Collaborations 4) Knowledge Mobilization and Policy, and 5) Celebrating Exemplary Leadership. In the last 12 months alone, we have reached 826,000 children, parents and guardians, and nearly 5,000 schools across Canada. New initiatives such as the Education Summit, a Pan-Canadian Study of Career Education and follow-up plans for a CEO Roundtable, Business-Education Task Force, It’s My Future student voice forums, together with our traditional Champions of Public Education Tribute events honouring Mr. Rick Waugh, Mr. John Stackhouse, Mr. Aditya Jha, and Mr. James Ross are just some of the highlights this year. We invite you to read more about this within the pages of this report. Open debates on education have never been so transparent and dynamic as they are today. Our teams, partners, volunteers and supporters at The Learning Partnership embrace this ‘renaissance’ with great enthusiasm. It allows us to do what we do best – building results-focused and student-centric collaborations with academia, industry, commerce, education and the broader community – to ensure that Canada’s public education system is world-class and one that continually strives for excellence. One last, but important note in appreciation of the spirit of camaraderie and the high-calibre leadership that is the fabric of The Learning Partnership. In January 2013 - halfway through this business year - we transitioned to new leadership at The Learning Partnership and we are honoured to share that this leadership transition has been extraordinarily successful. For this we thank our committed Board members for their guidance and our dedicated staff team for their support. Our partnerships have never been stronger and we are building new relationships as we look to the future with enthusiasm and optimism. We have ensured that the momentum of our work is uncompromised in advancing Canada’s publicly funded education system to be even stronger and more vibrant than ever.

Akela Peoples Michael Coté 4 President and CEO, The Learning Partnership Chair, Board of Directors, The Learning Partnership thelearningpartnership.ca Our Story ... 20 Years of Success!

Our story began in the early 1990s when businessman Charlie Pielsticker realized that there were virtually no opportunities for business leaders to network with leaders in our elementary and secondary schools. He recognized the need for these two groups to collaborate so that our public education system could adapt to changing demographics and shifting economic needs. So he created a way to make this happen. In April 1993, Charlie registered the name of a new organization – The Metro Learning Partnership. After assembling a board of directors from both the business and education sectors, Charlie elicited support from the fi ve major banks – BMO, CIBC, RBC, Scotiabank, and TD – who have continued their support to the present. A search then began for an innovative and well-connected individual with fundraising talents to serve as CEO, someone with a foot in both the education and business camps. That person was Gordon Cressy. Gordon single-handedly set to work building an organization from the ground up. He created our inaugural program and the fi rst Take Our Kids to Work™ day took place in November 1994. At that time, it only involved students in the Greater Toronto Area. Nineteen years later, this remains our signature program, but it is now nationwide, involving more than 250,000 students and 75,000 employers annually! Over the next six years, Gordon steadily grew the organization, moving it beyond the Greater Toronto Area and adding three more programs and seven more employees. Our name was modifi ed, dropping “Metro Toronto,” offi cially making us The Learning Partnership, to refl ect our increasing reach. When he decided to move on in 2000, respected educator and former Deputy Minister of Education Veronica Lacey took the helm. Veronica tapped into her wealth of educational contacts and recruited senior educators to manage the expanding number of programs. In 2001, we merged with the Collegium of Work and Learning, enabling us to add a Policy and Research division. Veronica also led the creation of our well-respected Executive Leadership programs for senior educators. The organization continued to grow to include 13 programs and more than 80 staff. After 12 incredible years, Veronica stepped down in December 2012. Another chapter of our story ended and a new one began. In January 2013, award-winning leader Akela Peoples became our third CEO. We can’t wait to see what the next 20 years will hold.

9 thelearningpartnership.ca Business Year 2012-2013 Highlights

2013 The Learning Partnership‘s 20th Anniversary! Honouring the Past and Celebrating the Future The Learning Partnership reached another signifi cant milestone in our journey in 2013 – celebrating 20 years of excellence in supporting, promoting and advancing public education in Canada from 1993-2013. We are proud of our inspiring and successful past built on the dedication of our founding leaders who believed that business and education leaders must work together to create a strong foundation for Canada’s bright and prosperous future. The momentum continues as we stay fully committed to this purpose by building more synergies, collaborations, programs, new initiatives, new opportunities and infl uencing thought leadership to ensure Canada has the best public education system in the world.

It’s Their Future!: A Pan-Canadian Study of Career Education In late 2013, we are releasing an environmental scan on nationwide approaches to preparing students for their future careers and post- secondary education pathways. This initiative was an outcome of the Education Summit where the attendees expressed an interest in understanding how Canadian schools prepare students for the world of work. Canadian students face an uncertain future that is radically different from the world their parents and educators were raised in. Understanding the current landscape will help us to fi nd better and more innovative ways to address the mismatch between “jobs without people and people without jobs.”
