India SITUATION REPORT SITUATION: The deep depression has moved over Virdarbha and adjoining East Madhya Pradesh moving West- North-west wards laying centre over West Madhya Pradesh about 50 KM away from Betual. Under its influence heavy rainfall would occur over Western Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada, and Madhya Maharashtra. Sitrep Depression and heavy rainfall update July5, 2006 India Low lying areas of Mumbai City and Southern parts of Sub Urban areas are waterlogged. The rainfall received in Mumbai city during last 26hrs is 9cm. Subways --under pass bridges at Khar, Vile Parle, Andheri, Dahisar and Malad were among the worst affected spots. Other affected areas included Bahar Junction, Andheri Tab, SV Road LBS Road, Hind Mata, Pravasi Junction at Goregaon, Narayan Nagar, Usha Nagar, RAK Road, Nawab Tank Bridge at Wadala, Sardar Hotel at Kala Chowky, Dadar TT, JVPD Circle and PB Marg, Mahananda Dairy at Goregaon, Sewri railway crossing and near SIES College at RAK Road. Though BEST services remained largely unaffected, the BEST had to use 30 diversions to avoid severely waterlogged areas, such as Darpan Cinema, Milan subway, Andheri East, Dahisar subway, Kadivali, Borivali, Grant Road, Nana Chowk, Dadar TT, Parel TT and near Amulakh High School. By evening, 265 additional buses were plying to clear passenger traffic between CST-Dadar, Churchgate-Dadar, Dadar-Mahim, Kurla-Vashi, Ghatkopar-Vashi, Sion-Vashi, Dadar- Thane. The suburban rail services were affected. With Central line services suspended, the Western Railway operated its services with an average delay of 20 to 30 minutes. Due to continuous rains the water levels started rising and went beyond four inches at Sion-Matunga, Kurla, Byculla-Sandhurst Road and Wadala. This kept the traffic suspended on both the main and harbour line for over five to six hours. Later, when the water levels receded, services were resumed. Traffic along the Mumbai–Pune Expressway was diverted for over four hours on Tuesday following a landslide late on Monday evening. According to sources, all vehicular traffic was diverted from the 47 kilometre mark at the Lonavala exit, through national Highway No 4. Traffic was then joined again at the 43 km mark on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The authorities expected all vehicular movement to be normalized. River: River Indravati at Jagdalpur in Bastar / Jagdalpur district was flowing at 542.37m as against the danger level of 540.80 at 8am on July5. The forecasted trend is falling. Admintstrative Measures: In Andhra Pradesh Administrtaion has deployed 3 boats for evacuation, 3000 persons accommodated in relief camps, 15000 food packets distributed. Measures taken in Orissa are listed in the table above for damage details of Orissa. In Maharashtra the following is done to deal with the water logging and resultant traffic Schools have been closed. People have been advised to move on the roads only in need and emergency Western Rail traffic has been operational for local commuter without any disruption through out the day (5 July 2006) despite heavy rainfall in Mumbai and water logging between rail routes: Mahim and Matunga Road. Rail authority has decided to operate local train services at a frequency of 5 minutes from stations: Church gate to Andheri/Borivali/Virar. Trains running late on the Konkan Railway line include: Passenger trains running between station’s Ratnagiri – Roha-Karwar; Super fast trains between stations- Mangaon-Roha- Madgaon-Ratnagiri-sangamehwar; Super fat trains between stations Ratnagiri-Roha-Karwar- Roha Long distance train services were affected due to incessant rain in Gujarat state, which resulted in late arrival at its destination at Bandra Terminus and Mumbai Central.
