41 Broadcast Video Timing – “Genlock” • What is genlock? – A process that allows color & frame synchronization between all video sources in a studio
• Why is genlock needed? – To avoid synchronization problems in video processors and displays when sources are switched/mixed • Color shifts • Picture loss or instability (jump, roll, or tear)
• How is genlock achieved? – Analog video reference is distributed into each source (cameras, switchers, etc.) – Source’s genlock circuitry extracts reference’s clock signal to synchronize output frame timing
