Billy Hinsche BIO Billy Hinsche BIO Born on June 29, 1951 in Manila, the Philippines, and raised in Los Angeles, Billy began playing piano at the age of 5, violin at age 7, ukulele at 8 and guitar at the age of 12. He formed a successful pop musical group in the mid-sixties with friends Dino Martin, Jr. and Desi Arnaz, Jr. and were the original teen idol band. The trio was known as Dino, Desi & Billy and their audition for Reprise’s Frank Sinatra lead to 4 successful albums, 6 songs on the Billboard and Cash Box singles charts with appearances on every local and national television show of the era including Shindig, Shivaree, Hullabaloo, Where The Action, 9th Street West, The Mike Douglas Show, The Joey Bishop Show, Sammy Davis, Jr.’s Wonderful World of Children and The Ed Sullivan Show in 1965 performing their back-to-back hits, “I’m a Fool” and “Not the Lovin’ Kind” written by their producer, the great Lee Hazlewood. DD&B appeared as themselves in the film Murderer’s Row starring Dean Martin (as Matt Helm), Ann-Margret and Carl Malden, and they did a television commercial for Royal Crown Cola that can still be seen on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymwK-n2VCms The young trio toured extensively as the opening act for The Beach Boys, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs and headlined their own tours throughout the U.S. and Canada. He has made a series of documentary style films featuring his time spent with The Beach Boys as well as an instructional piano video “Play Songs of the Beach Boys: Piano Accompaniments to Rock Classics” that was released by Homespun Video in 1995. Much of his archival footage has been used in all the significant documentaries that have been made about the legendary group including “The Beach Boys: An American Band,” “Endless Harmony: The Beach Boys Story,” “Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of ‘Smile’” and others and has appeared in these programs himself for his valuable insights, commentary and recollections about the group. Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue Produced by Dennis Wilson & Gregg Jakobson Released August 22, 1977 - Caribou PZ 34354 (CBS) Pacific Ocean Blue - Legacy Edition Originial Recordings Produced by Dennis Wilson & Gregg Jakobson Bonus Tracks Produced by Dennis Wilson, John Hanlon & Gregg Jakobson Executive Producer: James William Guercio Released June 17, 2008 - Caribou/Epic/Legacy 88697-07916-2 (Sony/BMG) Disc One Dennis Wilson had always been considered the quintessential "Beach Boy": not in a musical sense (that, of course, was Brian), but in a lifestyle sense. His love of surfing inspired the others to adopt the image that launched the band, and his further adventures in the worlds of fast cars, fast bikes, and fast women continued to fuel the imagination and song catalog of his older brother and cousin. But in the first five or six years of their career, his musical contributions were limited to drumming and singing backup (and sometimes not even that), with an occasional lead vocal opportunity (either covers of other artists or new songs that Brian and Mike would throw his way). However, with Brian Wilson's retreat from full artistic control of the band in 1967, the other members (Dennis included) began to be relied upon more and more for compositional and production efforts. Dennis' first contributions in this respect appear on the 1968 Friends album, and would continue over the next five years; tunes like "Little Bird", "Be With Me", "Celebrate The News", and "Forever" were highlights of the late '60s-early '70s Beach Boys era. In order for Dennis to evolve musically into something more than "just the fun-loving playboy drummer", he needed to master a melodic/chordal instrument well enough to compose on it.

  • Postmodernism and Rock Music As Countercultural
OUTSIDERS, OUTCASTS, AND OUTLAWS: POSTMODERNISM AND ROCK MUSIC AS COUNTERCULTURAL FORCES IN SALMAN RUSHDIE'S THE GROUND BENEATH HER FEET by DAN HUTT B.A., University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 1993 A THESIS submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF ARTS Department of English College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2011 Approved by: Dr. Dean Hall ABSTRACT Salman Rushdie's 1999 novel The Ground Beneath Her Feet is ostensibly a rock 'n' roll novel, largely set in the 1960s, that traces the commercial rise of Indian rock star protagonists Vina Apsara and Ormus Cama. As their fame and wealth rise to global status and their stage show comes to entail a logistical complexity of military proportions, it becomes increasingly difficult to discern the couple's earlier countercultural ideals within their new established culture status. I argue that despite the change from countercultural to establishment-based values in the novel's protagonists, Rushdie does make a case in The Ground Beneath Her Feet for the possibility of countercultural efficacy against the commodifying culture of global capitalism (which I refer to as the "Frame"). His recipe for combating the exclusive hierarchies produced by the Frame is a combination of the non-totalizing politics of postmodernism and the subversive potential of uncommodified rock music. I pay close attention to establishing the historical templates--John Lennon of the Beatles and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys--of the novel's protagonists in an effort to understand the sort of countercultural alternative Rushdie is proposing. I likewise focus on the novel's depiction of the Beach Boys' Smile album, which as a still commercially unreleased record, reinforces Rushdie's imperative in The Ground Beneath Her Feet for an uncommodifying counterculture and works in tandem with his portrayals of the artistic plights of several minor characters in the novel as well.

  • View the Plaque That the Beach Boys Received
On September 2, 1977, on this very spot, THE BEACH BOYS performed for the largest concert audience EVER assembled in the history of Rhode Island, a record that has never been broken. Over 40,000 fans gathered to watch their performance at the Narragansett Park Race Track here in Pawtucket, RI, essentially increasing the population of the city by 50% for one day. The band included founding members Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine, along with their backing musicians Charles Lloyd, Ed Carter, Billy Hinsche, Bobby Figueroa, Carli Munoz, Elmo Peeler, and their horn section, Tornado. British hit-maker Leo Sayer served as opening act for the show. The concert also had the distinction of being the largest payday for The Beach Boys in their career up until that point. The band played selections in support of their new album, 'The Beach Boys Love You,' and the concert took place two weeks before the release of Dennis Wilson's acclaimed album, 'Pacific Ocean Blue.' In addition to being the location of the biggest musical audience in the state's history, this spot is also notable for having hosted the largest gathering ever for a sporting event in Rhode Island, on Labor Day 1934. This continued the tradition of many historical moments on this site, including the launch of the legendary champion Seabiscuit's career. Amazing how this one mile-long oval race track, which held over 40,000 music fans in its center, being surrounded by years and years of sheer power of some of the world's fastest championship thoroughbred horses of a by-gone era, racing, circling what would become the concert site, absolutely contributed to the incredible energy of the The Beach Boys' fans on that historic summer day.

  • Beach Boys RWU Plaque 1 9/20/17, 12:30 PM
On September 22, 1971, Music Icons and Grammy Award Winners THE BEACH BOYS performed in this very building, the Baypoint Inn & Conference Center, in the ballroom of what was once The Ramada Inn. The show was sponsored by Roger Williams University. The concert featured the band’s founding members Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, and long-time member Bruce Johnston, along with their backing musicians Daryl Dragon, Ed Carter, Mike Kowalski, Bobby Torres, and their new five-piece horn section. The performance that night was a very significent historic event in the band’s career. The concert was the first-ever appearance of new members Ricky Fataar and Billy Hinsche to the band, essentially changing The Beach Boys’ live and recording act’s line-up into a multi-racial and multi-cultural group. This shifted the band into an important creative period, which included the recording of the classic albums ‘Carl and the Passions - So Tough’ and ‘Holland,’ of which shortly thereafter Rolling Stone magazine would name them ‘Band of the Year.’ Blondie Chaplin would arrive five months later to complete the picture and to solidify the band’s new direction. In the words of revered rock journalist Paul Williams, ‘This was The Beach Boys’ most interesting, creative, and adventurous era, the years when the band had the freedom and impulse to be something greater.’ The Beach Boys are indeed ‘America’s Band,’ and on that night here in Portsmouth, RI in 1971, they truly earned that honor by turning the group into a unit of true diversity, embracing and echoing America’s mantle as a ‘melting pot,’ and turning the heads of music fans and the rock press all over the world.
