  • Swedish Pop Mafia: How a Culturally Conservative Effort in the 1940S Backfired to Create the Greatest Engine of Pop Music in the World
Swedish Pop Mafia: How a culturally conservative effort in the 1940s backfired to create the greatest engine of pop music in the world BY WHET MOSER • March 24, 2014 • At some point over the last 15 years—sometime, say, between the 1999 release of “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys and last year’s “Roar” by Katy Perry—it became an inescapable fact that if you want to understand American pop music, you pretty much have to understand Sweden. Songwriters and producers from Stockholm have buttressed the careers of Lady Gaga, Madonna, Usher, Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, Pitbull, Taylor Swift, One Direction, Maroon 5, Kelly Clarkson, and any number of other artists you’ve probably listened to while dancing, shopping, making out, or waiting on hold over the past decade. (And it’s not just American pop music that has Scandinavian fingerprints all over it: When Azerbaijan won the Eurovision contest in a 2011 upset, they did it with a song written for them by two Swedes.) If Americans are aware of this phenomenon, it is probably because they’ve heard about the legendary Swedish producer and songwriter Max Martin. There are any number of ways to express Martin’s ubiquity, but here’s one: From 2010 to 2011, the pop idol Katy Perry spent an unprecedented 69 consecutive weeks in the Billboard top 10, surpassing the previous record-holder, the 1990s Swedish group Ace of Base, by four months. But the milestone was far more of a testament to Martin’s staying power than Perry’s: Not only did he help produce and write all but one of Perry’s record- breaking string of hits, but he began his career as a producer for Ace of Base.

Stockholm and Eurovison Song Contest Two Eurovision entries in 2015 were written during Stockholm Songwriting Camp Macedonia’s ”Autumn Leave’s” was composed and written by Joacim Persson. Azerbaijan’s ”Hour of the Wolf” was written by Nicolas Rebscher, Nicklas Lif and Lina Hansson during the first ever Stockholm Songwriting Camp at Pop House hotel in Stockholm, january 2015. In addition several pop songs met the public ears during the year, including Conchita Wurst’s ”Firestorm” written and produced by Joacim Persson, Sebastian Arman and Aleena Gibson (who was an additional writer not at the camp), and the song ‘Step to my beat’ which the ‘pop dynamo’ Ronika co-wrote at the camp with Nicolas Rebscher. It was also featured in The Guardians pop playlist. Stockholm Songwriting Camp is an initiative that brings together writers and producers from around the world. It is a hub that values the creativity of others and wants to provide a neutral platform for embracing creativity across the songwriting world. What makes the concept different from a lot of camps is the fact that the organizers do not claim any publishing rights, all property is the writers – it is simply the meeting place. The concept was founded by Niclas Molinder owner of Auddly, based in Stockholm. Music production in Swedish higher education Music production in Swedish higher education History and future challenges Jan-Olof Gullö and David Thyrén Music production is a relatively new and emerging subject within academia (Frith and Zagorski-Thomas, 2012; Ternhag and Wingstedt, 2012). We argue that music production, in many ways, may still be considered a blind spot in the field of music research. Admit- tedly, we have observed a growing interest in music production, not only in higher edu- cation, where many students today study music production, but also media coverage of music production has notably increased in recent years (Norberg and Wiberg, 2019; Sea- brook, 2015). Despite this, music production in general, and music production education in particular, are still understudied research subjects: music production has not been in- vestigated to any great extent, neither within Sweden nor internationally. The aim of this article is to present an overview of music production in higher education and in research. Several internationally successful Swedish songwriters, musicians, and music produc- ers have more of an informal background than a formal scholastic education (Folkestad, 2006; Gullö and Gardemar, 2019) and many of them show well-developed entrepre- neurial skills. The successful Swedish music producer Dag Volle (1963–1998), also known as Denniz PoP, was one of these. Volle lacked formal music education, but he had some unique music-producer skills and also developed new innovative music-production meth- ods (Norberg and Wiberg, 2019). Previous research has largely ignored his work, despite his role in the success of Swedish music exports (Björnberg and Bossius, 2017).

Jak podają źródła, w 1948 roku francuski badacz, kompozytor, akustyk Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995) nagrał za pomocą mikrofonu dźwięki naturalne m.in. (śpiew ptaków, hałas uliczny, rozmowy) i próbował je przekształcać. Tak powstała muzyka nazwana konkretną (fr. musigue concrete). W tym samym roku wyemitował w radiu „Koncert szumów”. Jego najważniejszą kompozycją okazał się utwór pt. „Symphonie pour un homme seul” z 1950 roku. W kolejnych latach muzykę konkretną łączono z muzyką tradycyjną. Oto pionierzy tego eksperymentu: John Cage i Yannis Xenakis. Muzyka konkretna pojawiła się w kompozycji Rogera Watersa. Utwór ten trafił na ścieżkę dźwiękową do filmu „The Body” (1970). Grupa Beaver and Krause wprowadziła muzykę konkretną do utworu „Walking Green Algae Blues” z albumu „In A Wild Sanctuary” (1970), a zespół Pink Floyd w „Animals” (1977). Pierwsze próby tworzenia muzyki elektronicznej miały miejsce w Darmstadt (w Niemczech) na Międzynarodowych Kursach Nowej Muzyki w 1950 roku. W 1951 roku powstało pierwsze studio muzyki elektronicznej przy Rozgłośni Radia Zachodnioniemieckiego w Kolonii (NWDR- Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk). Tu tworzyli: H. Eimert (Glockenspiel 1953), K. • In 1998, Pop Music Was Poised to Make One of Its Greatest Comebacks in History
In 1998, pop music was poised to make one of its greatest comebacks in history. Following several years, of brooding, self-absorbed radio fare, top 40 listeners were aching to see the sun* and have a little fun with the car windows down. *NSYNC introduced itself to the U.S. with the anthemic, high-energy “I Want You Back.” In March, it lit the airwaves like fireworks, washing away FM’s dark veneer and offering a proper introduction to the consummate millennium-era hitmaking ensemble. Of course, at the time, no one knew that these five show biz kids were destined to break records left and right. Over the course of five years, *NSYNC—Justin Randall Timberlake (Justin), Joseph Anthony Fatone Jr. (Joey), Joshua Scott Chasez (JC), James Lance Bass (Lance) and Christopher Alan Kirkpatrick (Chris)—would sell nearly 30 million records in the U.S. and 42 million worldwide. The group charted with a dozen singles, conquering top 40, AC, dance, Latin, country and R&B. Theft gargantuan worldwide “No Strings Attached” and “PopGdyssey” stadium tours rewrote sales, artistic and technical standards for road shows (when tickets for the first 52 “Strings” dates went on sale, one million sold on day one, a record). Later, the stripped down “Celebrity” tour zeroed in on *NSYNC’s musical prowess. These guys even refined the definition of a boy band, working with “grown-up” acts like Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion, Phil Collins and Richard Marx. Their:story began modestly enough in the mid-1990s. Timberlake and Chasez knew eaeh other as Mouseketeer graduates of the Disney Channel's “The Mickey Mouse Club.” As the two were recording respective demos in Nashville in search of a recording contract, Timberlake received a call from Kirkpatrick, whom he'd met on the audition circuit around Orlando’s Disney and Universal Studios, suggesting that they put together an ensemble.

  • A Scene for Creativity the Stockholm Music Scene. a Springboard For
Stockholm – A scene for creativity The Stockholm music scene. A springboard for superstars! Stockholm is a springboard for Swedish music, and artists based in Stockholm are famous in music circles the world over. In Stockholm, you can find everything from ABBA of the 70s to Robyn - and now the world famous DJ Avicii. Song-writers from Denniz Pop to Redone have filled the hit-lists with smash hits for Madonna and company for the last three decades. How can it be that such a sparsely populated country in northern Europe has taken such a prominent place on the world music scene and why, in particular - Stockholm? Music - a natural part of growing up Perhaps one of the explanations is Swedish society itself. Music is a natural part of children's lives. Aside from the fact that music is included in the school curriculum, there are also a large number of clubs and organizations - most of them non-profit - that make it possible for those who are interested in music to pursue their interests. In Sweden, there is a long and profound musical tradition with celebrated world stars such as opera singer Jenny Lind and Jussi Björling and jazz musicians such as the Esbjörn Svensson Trio and Monica Zetterlund. Swedish choirs are world-class and director Eric Ericsson with his Kammarkör (Chamber choir) is considered to be one of the best choirs in the world. It all starts at the school bench The municipal music schools are one of the most important contributing factors. These music schools provide voluntary training in music that is operated in co- operation with the municipal schools.
