These included Sakta poems sung to th e sain t by his dis- ciples, which frequentl y sent him int o an ecstatic mood. I always wanted my father to ge t throug h thes e poetry excerpt s as fast a s possible. To me the y seemed ful l o f flowery Englis h an d inscrutabl e meanings; I wa s fa r mor e intereste d i n Rama - krishna's conversation s and jokes. Ramprasad an d Kamalakanta , in othe r words , were househol d names , and I thank my parents, and Swam i Nikhilananda's formal English translations, for introducing m e to them at such a young age. Although m y husband Scott views the Sakta poetry i n a light similar to that of Rachel the child, he has selflessly supporte d me an d this project, and much credi t for its completion belongs to him .     © Wagadu Volume 3: Spring 2006 Symbols of Water and Woman iSymbols of Water and Woman on Selected Examples of Modern Bengali Literature in the Context of Mythological Tradition.* Blanka Knotková-Čapková As in many archaic mythological concepts, the four basic elements are represented in the Indian mythology as either male or female: air (wind) and fire are male principles, later personified as male deities – Agni and Vāyu; earth and water (river) are female. The metaphorization of woman as Water and Earthii has a strong essentialist aspect; it points to the symbol of the womb, the mysterious feminine source of life, the “cradle and grave”iii or “womb and tomb”, “the Great Mother symbolizing circularity of life and death” (cf. Kalnická, in Wilkoszewska 2001, 107), who also disposes with the ultimate power over life and death. As such, she personifies the female creative and dynamic cosmic energy, śakti. Together with her male counterpart (personified as male God Śiva), she represents the dual image of cosmical unity and harmony. In heterodox śaktism, she is worshipped as the ultimate spiritual principle, not dependent on the male principle; in śivaismiv, she is described as the left part of Śiva’s body. Śaktism also worships śakti in the metonymical image of yoni, the female genitals, the location of the sensual pleasure and the beginning of life (the way to / from the womb).v Some of the mythological personifications of śakti have been partially patriarchalized and “married” to the male Gods; a possible pre-Indo-European concept of an independent motherly deity (whose image was connected with the vegetation cycle, eternal recreation and rebirth).

The upper-caste Christian neophytes, often products of the new western education system, took to Christianity to register socio-political dissent. However, given his/her socio-political location, the Christian convert faced a crisis of entitlement: as a convert they faced immediate ostracising from Hindu conservative society, and even as devout western moderns could not partake in the colonizer’s version of selective Christian brotherhood. I argue that Christian convert literature imaginatively uses Hindu mythology as a master-narrative to partake in both these constituencies. This paper turns to the reception aesthetics of an oft forgotten play by Michael Madhusudan Dutt, the father of modern Bengali poetry, to explore the contentious relationship between Christianity and colonial modernity in nineteenth-century Bengal. In particular, Dutt’s deft use of the semantic excess as a result of the overlapping linguistic constituencies of English and Bengali is examined. Further, the paper argues that Dutt consciously situates his text at the crossroads of different receptive constituencies to create what I call ‘layered homogeneities’.

Sil** Abstract : 7DJRUH¶VDQWL-absolutist and anti-statist stand is predicated primarily on his vision of global peace and concord²a world of different peoples and cultures united by amity and humanity. While this grand vision of a brave new world is laudable, it is, nevertheless, constructed on misunderstanding and misreading of history and of the role of the nation state in the West since its rise sometime during the late medieval and early modern times. Tagore views state as an artificial mechanism, indeed a machine thDWWKULYHVRQFRHUFLRQFRQIOLFWDQGWHUURUE\VXEYHUWLQJSHRSOH¶VIUHHGRPDQG culture. This paper seeks to argue that the state also played historically a significant role in enhancing and enriching culture and civilization.     The Bhakti Cycle of Assamese Lyrics: Bargits and After Maheswar Neog --- www.atributetosankaradeva.org presents before the readers a pioneering paper on the Vaisnava music of Assam, authored by Dr. Maheswar Neog. It covers virtually every aspect of the devotional lyric of the Sankaradeva Movement (and also traces its progress through time). This paper was written in the early part of the latter half of the 20th century when Bargit research was still at a nascent stage. Editing note(s):- Diacritics has been used sparingly; generally only the long diacritic (macron) pertaining to a/A has been highlighted and that too, depending upon the context. --- Introduction In the latter half of the fifteenth century Sankaradeva (1449-1568 A.D.), a Kayastha by caste, founded a school of neo-Vaisnavism in Assam. This religion has a monotheistic doctrine based on the Bhagavata Purana and is called Eka-Sarana Nama- Dharma. It enjoins the worship of the one Supreme Deity or Visnu, specially in His incarnation as Krsna and interdicts its followers from the worship of any other god or goddess. The Radha-Krsna cult is not acknowledged in his system of Vaisnavism. Of the different modes of bhakti or devotion, the dasya (servile) mode was insisted upon by Sankaradeva. (Dr. B. Kakati, The Mother Goddess Kamakhya, 1948, pp. 75-77). The attitude of the votary is to look upon Krsna - not as a play-mate as in sakhya (friendship), not as one’s child as in vatsalya (filial love), not as the male lover as in madhura (conjugal love), nor as an impersonal Being as in santa rasa (calm sentiment) - but as the master demanding love and veneration of the devotee as of a servant.

For these western poets, the romantic notion was replaced with desperation and despondency and loneliness of modern minds. JibanadaDas, Budda Dev Bose, shudindranath Dutt, Amiochacrabarti, and Bishnudey, all of them being the professors of English Literature, successfully incorporated Western Modernist outlook with a view to shaking off Tagore’s romantic perception.They were much influenced by French imagist and symbolist movement, French surrealist poets, Garman expressionist poets and other modernists. Sometimes they incorporates Eatsian ideology, sometimes they followed Eliotic view, and sometimes they followed Marxist Theory or Freudian psychoanalysis. Though, these modernist poets take on different styles and ways to reveal the alienation, hypocrisy and anxiety of modern man, they perceive the fact that to reflect the post-war modern world, there is no alternative of discarding romantic notion about life. This paper will shed light on three poets, Jibananda Das, AmioCakrabarti, and BishnuDey and the Western Modernist philosophy that has molded their poetic career.
