The Ebony Tower: Mythical Women and Powerful Men1 The Ebony Tower: Mujeres míticas y hombres poderosos Esther Muñoz-González Universidad de Zaragoza [email protected] Recibido 20 enero 2018 Aceptado 11 abril 2018 Resumen The Ebony Tower (1975) es una novela corta deliberada en su artificialidad que constituye un perfecto ejemplo de la permanente reformulación de temas que John Fowles lleva a cabo a lo largo de toda su obra—como los pares opuestos de creadores vs coleccionistas, cómo el nacimiento y la clase social marcan la diferencia de oportunidades en la vida, la dificultad para comunicarse—, elementos míticos y una perspectiva existencialista. Teniendo en cuenta que la novela corta sigue escrupulosamente los pasos del “viaje del héroe” (Campbell, 1993: 245), el propósito de este artículo es, primeramente, debatir los elementos míticos en el texto de Fowles y cómo los personajes coinciden y divergen de sus arquetipos míticos. Y, en segundo lugar, probar que esos roles míticos podrían ser patriarcales y estar contribuyendo a mantener posiciones de subyugación para las mujeres ya como musas, colaboradoras o simplemente como objetos sexuales del deseo y para procrear. Abstract The Ebony Tower (1975) is a self-conscious novella that constitutes a perfect example of John Fowles’s consistent reformulation, throughout his work, of themes—such as the oppositional pair creator versus collector, how birth and social class grant different opportunities in life, the difficulty to communicate—, mythical elements and the existentialist perspective. Metafiction, Historiography, and Mythopoeia in the Novels of John Fowles
METAFICTION, HISTORIOGRAPHY, AND MYTHOPOEIA IN THE NOVELS OF JOHN FOWLES A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Michelle Phillips Buchberger School of Arts, Brunel University February 2009 Abstract This thesis concerns the novelist John Fowles and analyses his seven novels in the order in which they were written. The study reveals an emergent artistic trajectory, which has been variously categorized by literary critics as postmodern. However, I suggest that )RZOHV¶VZRUNLVPRUHFRPSOH[DQGVLJQLILFDQWWKDQVXFKDUHGXFWLYHDQGVLPSOLVWLFODbel would suggest. Specifically, this study argues that )RZOHV¶VZRUNFRQWULEXWHVWRWKH reinvigoration of the novel form by a radical extension of the modernist project of the literary avant-garde, interrogating various conventions associated with both literary realism and the realism of the literary modernists while still managing to evade a VXEMHFWLYHUHODWLYLVP2ISDUWLFXODULQWHUHVWWRWKHVWXG\LV)RZOHV¶VWUeatment of his female characters, which evolves over time, indicative of an emergent quasi-feminism. This study counters the claims of many contemporary literary FULWLFVWKDW)RZOHV¶VZRUN cannot be reconciled with any feminist ideology. Specifically, I highlight the increasing FHQWUDOLW\RI)RZOHV¶VIHmale characters in his novels, accompanied by a growing focus on the mysterious and the uncanny. )RZOHV¶VZRUNLQFUHDVLQJO\DVVRFLDWHVmystery with creativity, femininity, and the mythic, suggests that mystery is essential for growth and change, both in society and in the novel form itself, and implies that women, rather than men, DUHQDWXUDOO\SUHGLVSRVHGWRHPEUDFHLW)RZOHV¶VQRYHOVUHIOHFWDZRUOGYLHZWKDW challenges an over-reliance on the empirical and rational to the exclusion of the mysterious and the intuitive. I suggHVWWKDW)RZOHV¶VQRYHOVHYLQFH an increasingly mythopoeic realism, constantly testing the limits of what can be apprehended and articulated in language, striving towards a realism that is universal and transcendent. -

A few weeks before writing this, I was driving in Dorset and was drawn into making a detour away from the main road via Lyme Regis— partly, no doubt, to revisit the complex and compressed town centre, with its steep hills, crazy twists and turns, roads no wider than the car. But as I looked out at the Cobb, half hoping to see a solitary woman standing at the end, then drove close to John Fowles's house, I realized it was more than a desire to see the town. I have been reading and teaching Fowles for thirty years now, and persistent rumours of his bad health — the book under review mentions the "mild stroke" in 1988 which resulted in the end of his career as a novelist (3)—with the real• ization that there may well be no new fiction from him, had somehow pulled me to pay a useless tribute, to thank him. There, on the B3052, 1 felt both loss and gratitude as well as anger that Fowles was only 5g when his last novel appeared and already 39 when his first was pub• lished. Too short. Too short by far for a writer with such a brimming imagination, who once said that his fantasy was to "write a book in ev• ery genre" (Olshen 2). -
Dialogue and Construction of Woman in John Fowles's a Maggot

Althubaiti Dept. of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Arts, Taif University, Saudi Arabia Abstract This article explores how John Fowles, in his last published novel A Maggot (1985), has depicted the figure of woman in a strong dialogical position, as a matriarch leading the entire dialogical narrative of the novel. For Fowles, the woman has metamorphosed from being a fallen and problematic woman into a successful and sacred historical mother of Ann Lee, the founder of the Shakers. Indeed through the dialogical confrontations of the Shaker woman, Rebecca Lee, with her multi-faceted challenges of the lawyer Henry Ayscough, the patriarch, who has constantly constructed her as a fallen woman, Fowles deployed a very problematic construction for women, thereby challenging all the traditional discourses of female forbidden behaviour and quizzing the decidedly patriarchal perception of women within the seventeenth-century English culture (the novel is a late twentieth-century text about the seventeenth century) in terms of sexuality, education, and the corruption of law system, and also to reconstruct the Shakers’ weird idea of redemption. This article focuses on the question of how Fowles sees the woman; how she should be perceived: the fallen figure and the female sexuality is a masculine construct within a patriarchal society, whereas in reality and for the Shakers, she is an immutable sacred matriarch. For Fowles, this “divine matriarch” is Rebecca Lee (aliases Fanny, Louise), the former Quaker woman forced by circumstances into prostitution. -

Dealing with the concepts of internal exile, individual isolation and loneliness, he dwelt on duality, fragmentation, discontinuity, the combination of the past and the present and the search of the individual for whole sight. His novel, Daniel Martin, portrays these features, however it not only includes these aspects of postmodern novels, but it also acquires the significant characteristics of the Victorian Bildungsroman, one of the remarkable types of realistic novels. Thus, the aim of this study is to identify the combination of realism and postmodernism in Daniel Martin in the light of the struggles of the protagonist, who tries to eliminate his fragmented identity and to achieve a sense of wholeness, so in this paper the characteristics of postmodern novels will be analyzed together with the traits of the Bildungsroman by concentrating on the relationship between history and fiction. -
