He received his B.A. M.Sc. and Ph.D (1974) degrees in Chemistry (summa cum laude) from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In 1976 he joined the Technion, becoming a full professor in 1988 and has held a Chair in Chemistry since1993. Between 1995-1999 he served as Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry. Between 2001-2009 he was the President of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. In his eight years as Technion President he led the Technion into new areas of science and technology and raised some $500 million dollars in donations. Among others, he established the $100 million Russell Berrie Institute for Nanotechnology, the $50 million Lorry I. Lokey Center in Life Sciences and Engineering; a $25 million dollars Center for Autonomous Systems and $100 million Alfred E. Mann Institute for Biomedical Development aimed to facilitate development of Technion's researchers' inventions. Yitzhak Apeloig is a world-leader in organosilicon chemistry and in the application of quantum mechanics theory to chemistry. He has published more than 180 scholarly papers and reviews, and edited 7 books. He received many awards for his scientific innovative work, among them: the American Chemical Society Frederic Stanely Kipping Award in Silicon Chemistry (2010), The Wacker Silicone Award (2007), an Honorary Doctorate from the Technical University of Berlin (2006), the Israel Chemical Society Prize (2002), the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award (twice), the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Visiting Professor Award (3 times) and the Technion Awards for Academic Excellence, for Excellence in Research and for Excellence in Teaching. He is a Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2010) and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2009). He was a visiting professor at universities in four continents and presented more than 150 invited and plenary lectures in international conferences, universities and industry around the world. .

  • In Celebration of the 65Th Birthday of Professor Yitzhak Apeloig
DOI: 10.1002/chem.200902001 In Celebration of the 65th Birthday of Professor Yitzhak Apeloig This special issue of Chemistry—A European Journal is the British Mandate, which became a few months later the dedicated to our friend and colleague Yitzhak Apeloig on State of Israel. the occasion of his 65th birthday. The manuscripts published in this issue cover a large variety of themes spanning from Yitzhak grew up in the Tel-Aviv area and after 2.5 years of mandatory army service in the paratroopers he enrolled in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to study chemistry and physics, where he received a B.A. degree (summa cum laude) (1967), and where he continued with his graduate studies and completed (summa cum laude) his M.Sc (1969) and Ph.D (1974) degrees, under the supervision of Prof. Zvi Rappoport. The title of his Ph.D Thesis was: “Intermediates in SN1 Vinylic Substitution”. This research led to several im- portant publications in the field of experimental mechanistic organic chemistry; the first one, which remains vivid for Yitzhak, was entitled: “Vinylic Cations from Solvolysis. The Stereochemistry of the SN1 Reaction of 1,2-Dianisyl-2-phe- nylvinyl Halides” (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1969, 91, 6734). During the two years of his postdoctoral studies with Profes- sors Paul von Ragu Schleyer and John A. Pople (Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, 1998), who formed one of the most fruitful and remarkable partnerships in chemistry, Yitzhak became fascinated by the application of quantum mechani- cal calculations to chemistry and this outlined his future in- dependent way in chemistry, using theory and experiment in synergy, an approach which leads his research to this date.

Newsportal: A Symbol of Trust http://www.pressestelle.tu-berlin.de/menue/tub_medien/newsporta... Office for Press, Public Relations and Alumni TUB-newsportal A Symbol of Trust Scholarship paved the way for the new German-Israeli friendship – long before politics Sason Shaik, Helmut Schwarz and Yitzhak Apeloig: conducting research without frontiers for decades © TU Berlin/PR/Phil Dera Many years of scholarly and personal friendship unite Helmut Schwarz (TU Berlin), Yitzhak Apeloig (Technion Haifa) and Sason Shaik (Hebrew University of Jerusalem). Not only have they been involved in joint research projects, they also helped prepare the ground for the development of German-Israeli relations. These three professors of chemistry, all recipients of numerous awards and honors, find themselves reunited at the TU Berlin today, where, as laureates of the Humboldt Founda-tion, Yitzhak Apeloig and Sason Shaik are currently members of Helmut Schwarz’s working group. They spoke about their experiences, memories and the challenges they had to overcome to develop trust against the dark background of history which unites and divides Germany and Israel. They all share the same conviction: scholarly endeavor is “a means of devel-oping trust”. Today there is great diversity in German-Israeli research. Yet after World War II there were many hurdles to be overcome on a political and human level. How did everything come about? Helmut Schwarz: In order for diplomatic relations to be established, Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and the first Israeli Prime Minister Ben Gurion had to meet in New York, such was the controversy surrounding these talks in Germany and to an even greater extent in Israel – and with good reason.
