Our Partners Welcome to the second UPDATE newsletter for the Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Technology (YHIoT) . Despite the difficult times we continue to work under, thanks to all the brilliant staff involved with the YHIoT, we have made excellent progress with the IoT projects. In this newsletter we throw a spotlight on some of these projects and how they are shaping the YHIoT into a high-quality offer for the delivery of higher-level technical skills. The Digital Reality STEM Centre is now up and running made possible by the collaboration between our industry partners Catch and VISR. We also have two new builds underway and one due to go out to tender. Along with the refurbishment of two sites which complete this month, it really feels that the YHIoT spaces are taking shape to provide students with exciting places to learn the tech skills for today's workplace, and in the future. We were also pleased to launch our programme of virtual Tech Seminars, with the first delivered by the University of Hull on Robotics, AI and Ethics. Bishop Burton College also contributed to the Humber Waterline Summit with a talk on how their IoT project will help deliver a net carbon zero farm by 2030. All of this whist our partners ensure that staff and students have safe Environments in which to work and learn. Amy Gadd, Head of the YHIoT CONTENTS Who are the Yorkshire & Humber Institute of technology? For those that aren’t familiar with the YHIoT we are a partnership of the following organisations. We are one of 12 IoTs across the country and part of a wider government initiative led by the Department for Education. Askham Bryan College Precision Livestock Facility Plans Askham Bryan College has submitted its planning application for its Precision Livestock facility and classroom, and will soon be tendering for the main contractor. Construction is due to begin after Christmas with a completion date of July 2021 (global pandemics notwithstanding). The college are actively promoting their University Centre Institute of Technology-certified programmes which will begin for learner cohorts who will join in September 2021. Rob Wilson, Academic Lead Curriculum and Students, University Centre Askham Bryan says, “After a slight delay on the project due to the pandemic, we are looking forward to getting our plans off the ground for our specialist high welfare beef production buildings and dedicated teaching and learning space for delivering courses on Precision Livestock Farming (PLF). The You can find more details here. addition of this facility will be invaluable to the provision we offer and the taught skills we will deliver.” Bishop Burton College on Precision Agriculture and Reducing our Carbon Footprint Plans for a Carbon Net Zero Farm by 2030 • At the Waterline Summit 2020, Sharon Kirby, Higher Education Academic Lead for Agriculture, gave a presentation on the plans for a carbon net Zero farm by 2030 at Bishop Burton College. • Click on the photo below to watch the full presentation. York College visit to the VISR/Catch Digital Reality Centre Curriculum Heads at York College recently visited the YHIoT Digital Reality Centre in Hull developed by YHIoT employer partners VISR and Catch. VISR have developed their own Virtual/Mixed Reality system and recently supported a Microsoft project to enable Covid-19 treatment training safely by the NHS. The visit gave Curriculum Heads the opportunity to understand how Virtual and Mixed Reality could be incorporated into the Digital, Engineering, Manufacturing and Construction curriculums at York College in the future. Cyber-Security Degree Opportunities York College has launched the new Foundation Degree in Digital Technologies with Cyber Security. The course was developed in close collaboration with innovation-led technology company; boxxe. Course Tutor Richard Hind says: “Research published by the UK National Cybersecurity Centre suggests that more than half of UK businesses have a cyber security skills gap…… It is thought the cyber security job market will continue to grow throughout the 2020s. So, this is the perfect time to start developing a career in this rapidly expanding industry.” Details can be found here. YHIoT Tech Seminars Launched Through the YHIoT Research and Professional Development Group we put together a programme of online Tech Seminars. Launching these virtual seminars was Robotics, AI and Ethics delivered by Professor John Murray from the University of Hull on the 20th October 2020. Following the Tech Seminar, John was asked to speak on BBC Radio Humberside about this subject. • The link to the video of the seminar is here. • More information can be seen here. YHIoT Tech Seminars – 360 Video Staff from the YHIoT partners were invited to attend an international workshop on the use of 360 video in Higher Education and teaching. The virtual workshop held on the 18th November 2020 was part of Erasmus+, an EU programme being coordinated by the University of Hull along with other European universities from Belgium, Austria, Greece and Italy. The project is called SEPA360. The workshop looked at the research conducted to date in the use of 360 video in HE and has created several resources that are available to educational institutions. It also gave some practical demonstrations of how 360 can be used to enhance training and demonstrated it’s open-source software Vivista (Beta). Vivista is a 360° video editor and player being developed as an open-source software project at the PXL Hasselt. It enables users to enhance 360° video with text, images or videos, as well as allows users to integrate interactive components such as multiple-choice questions, area highlights and more.
