Appropriately, 24 of the 28 men in the singles field are from Europe, led by No. 1 seed David Goffin. Belgium’s best player is 10-3 since the US Open with runs to the Metz semi-finals, Tokyo final and ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai quarter-finals. Along the way, Goffin defeated Gael Monfils, Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro. Should he win the title Sunday, Goffin would rise to No. 9 in the Emirates ATP Race to London. However, Goffin has not captured a championship in more than two years. No. 2 seed David Ferrer and No. 5 seed Gilles Simon are suffering similar slumps. Neither former Top 10 player has advanced to a final thus far this season, though Simon beat World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka en route to the semi-finals at Shanghai last week. Ferrer has reached at least one final every year since 2005, while Simon has played for a title each season since 2006. The top-ranked team in the world headlines the European Open doubles draw as Wimbledon champions Pierre- Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut look to build momentum before the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. The Frenchmen lead the tour with five titles this season, but they are only five points ahead of Australian Open and US Open champions Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares in the battle to finish 2016 as the World No. 1s. DAY 1 PREVIEW: No. 8 seed Federico Delbonis, who won the Marrakech title in April, will contest the first singles match in European Open history when he meets Andreas Seppi. Iñigo Cervantes of Spain follows against 36-year-old German qualifier Michael Berrer. Singles play concludes with another All-European match-up between Gstaad finalist Robin Haase and Montpellier finalist Paul-Henri Mathieu.
