28 Oxfordshire County Music Service | School Music Opportunities Brochure NEW FOR 2018-2019 Cultural Exchange –

Do you have a group of year 9 – 13 singers who would like to be involved with a vocal experiment?

In a high-risk opportunity, youth singers will join with choral society members to sing repertoire from two complete ends of the vocal spectrum. All participants will have a love for one and a dislike for the other for both either ‘classical’ choral music, or, ‘pop’ music.

All will take part in a concert that will include Haydn’s Te Deum, Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus and Handel’s Messiah. This will be followed in the second half by pop songs sung en masse with soloists backing vocals and a pro-rock band.

The experiment is for all participants to sing together all the repertoire and for their opinions, perceptions and feelings to be recorded before, during and after the rehearsal period and concert.

If you would like to take part, please express your interest on the order form.

Instruments of Time & Truth – Professional musicians specialising in the Baroque period

Oxfordshire County Music Service is pleased to be working with new partners Instruments of Time and Truth in 2018/19 and invite schools to be part of this work.

The project comprises two strands:

1. an academic strand with workshops designed to contextualise the current GCSE and A-Level syllabuses as they relate to the Baroque period

2. a practical strand incorporating extension work for students already working with Baroque instruments, as well as more inclusive sessions for those with no prior Baroque experience who are grade 7+ in strings and brass

Register your interest and we will be in contact with you.

Talent Oxfordshire Signpost your pupils A competition for secondary aged students to showcase their musical rock and pop to this activity talents. Auditions will be held in a variety of secondary schools with two semi-finals and a Grand Final to be performed at the Centre for Music. The winning group or contestant will receive a recording session at the Centre for Music.

This is a small sample of our new activities. Keep abreast of music events at www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/musicevents

See www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/music throughout the year for updates 29 Instruments Signpost your pupils to this activity Instrument Hire OCMS provides a musical instrument hire scheme to schools and pupils. The instruments are supplied fully maintained, in good condition, with cases and all the appropriate accessories (bows, mouthpieces, etc). The charges for hiring instruments are available upon request.

Instrument Repair Schools are responsible for any instruments loaned or hired to them from the County Music Service. Schools will be expected to pay for loss or repairs other than wear and tear.

If an instrument is damaged it should be returned to the instrumental teacher at the next lesson. Teachers can often carry out minor repairs (replacing strings, adjusting instrument setup etc). If it cannot be fixed they will return it to the OCMS for repair.

Assisted Purchase Scheme The OCMS instrument purchase scheme allows us to buy a new instrument - VAT free – for a pupil who has lessons or ensembles with OCMS. Schools that wish to know more about this are welcome to contact us.

Additional information may be found on our website www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/cms/content/buying-instruments Funding Free School Meals Oxfordshire County Music Service currently offers a remission scheme to help families who qualify for Free School Meals. This policy is under review.

Oxford and Cambridge Note Race

The Oxford and Cambridge Note Race raises funds to provide much needed support to children and families locally and around the world.

The Grade-1-athon invites accomplished musicians of at least Grade 8 standard and at least 18 years old to get sponsored and rediscover what it is like to be a novice, to take the first steps on a new instrument and to face the first examination. Then, on the same evening, they will perform in an orchestral concert in their respective city. This will have some audience members running for cover, others howling with laughter, and yet others, admiring the stoicism and tenacity of the entrants. More information from www.gradeoneathon.org
