Preface The 56th annual meeting of the European Association for Animal Production (EAAP) is held in Uppsala,Sweden,5 to 8 June 2005. The annual EAAP meeting gives the opportunity to present new scientific results and discuss their potential applicability in animal production practices. This year’s meeting is of particular interest for participants from a wide range of animal production organisations and institutions. Discussions stimulate developments in animal production and encourage research on relevant topics. In Uppsala the main theme is “ Impact and Challenges of a widening Europe for Animal Production and Research”. Of the 35 sessions in total, 17 joint sessions of two or more Study Commissions are planned on: • Implications of EU restructuring and free trade on feed quality and safety, disease and food quality and safety • Specialised ruminant products to sustain systems and genetic resources • Alternative low input / organic production methods • Nutrition and management strategies to improve resource use in livestock systems • Functional genomics of reproduction and disease resistance • Functional traits in cattle • Feed evaluation systems for ruminants, horses and pigs • Physiology of pregnancy • High health pig systems • Coping with new regulation:Alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters and castration • Performance and health in young horses The book of abstracts is the main publication of the scientific contributions to this meeting; it covers a wide range of disciplines and livestock species. It contains the full programme and abstracts of the invited as well as the contributing speakers, including posters, of all 35 sessions. The number of abstracts submitted for presentation at this meeting (773) is a true challenge for the different study commissions and chairpersons to put together a scientific programme. In addition to the theatre presentations, there will be a large number of poster presentations during the conference. Several persons have been involved in the development of the book of abstracts. Wageningen Academic Publishers has been responsible for organising the administrative and editing work and the production of the book. The contact persons of the study commissions have been responsible for organising the scientific programme and communicating with the chairpersons and invited speakers. Their help and that of Cled Thomas in the programme of all free communications is highly appreciated. The programme is very interesting and I trust we will have a good meeting in Uppsala. I hope that you will find this book a useful reference source as well as a reminder of a good meeting during which a large number of people actively involved in livestock science and production will meet and exchange ideas. Ynze van der Honing Editor-in Chief EAAP – 56th Annual Meeting, Uppsala 2005 VII EAAP Program Foundation Aim EAAP aims to bring to our annual meetings, speakers who can present the latest findings and views on developments in the various fields of science relevant to animal production and its allied industries. In order to sustain the quality of the scientific program that will continue to entice the broad interest in EAAP meetings we have created the “EAAP Program Foundation”. This Foundation aims to support: • Invited speakers by funding part or all of registration and travel costs. • Delegates from less favoured areas by offering scholarships to attend EAAP meetings. • Young scientists by providing prizes for best presentations. The “EAAP Program Foundation” is an initiative of the Scientific Committee (SC) of EAAP. The Foundation is aimed at stimulating the quality of the scientific program of the EAAP meetings and to ensure that the science meets societal needs. In its first year (2003), the “EAAP Program Foundation” concentrated on the program of the Genetics commission. For the coming years the activities will be broadened to the entire meeting. The Foundation Board of Trustees oversees theses aims and seeks to recruit sponsors to support its activities. Sponsorships We distinguish three categories of sponsorship: Student award sponsor, Gold sponsor, and Sponsor. The sponsors will be acknowledged during the scientific sessions. The names of the Student Award sponsors will be linked to the awards given to young scientists with the best presentation. Gold Sponsors and Student Award sponsors will have the opportunity to advertise their activities during the meeting and their support for EAAP. Contact and further information If you are interested in becoming a sponsor of the “EAAP Program Foundation” or want to have further information, please contact the secretary of the Foundation, Dr Andrea Rosati (e-mail: [email protected]).
