Hanyang University is the successor of DongA Polytechnic Institute, which was established in 1939, as the first engineering college in Korea. In 1959, the Institute became more comprehensive and was upgraded to university status. Today, Hanyang is home to about 35,000 students in 23 colleges and 13 graduate schools.

To continue its momentum of progress, Hanyang University has been striving to promote internationalization and consequently, 500 courses instructed in English per semester by 150 foreign professors are now available. Also, through the Hanyang International Summer School (HISS), which offers more than 40 courses taught in English from distinguished educators, the University hosts more than 400 students from around the world. Efforts such as these have allowed Hanyang to recruit about 3,800 international students, and the University also has formal relations with over 360 universities worldwide.

The ERICA campus is located in the city of Ansan, which is approximately 40 kilometers south of Seoul. The ERICA campus is accessible to the Seoul campus by subway and takes about an hour. There is also a free Hanyang shuttle bus that runs between the campuses. ERICA stands for Education, Research and Industry Cluster at Ansan.
