Just feast your eyes upon all of these debut books to check out and emerging authors to Haines was a hot commodity in the industry with his hard-to-miss good looks, wittiness, and wisecracks. And as a fan of Joan Crawford I was definitely aware of Billy Haines although I found it interesting when he listed the 3 women most important to his career--the wealthy unknown woman who kept him starting out, Eleanor Boardman, and Barbara LaMarr, saying of La Marr "She was the woman who meant most to me during my years in Hollywood"--no real mention of Crawford which is very interesting. As a fan of both the stories of old Hollywood and the stories of people who live life against the grain, I was attracted to this biography. In a world where truth is often distorted in the funhouse mirror of Hollywood, Billy Haines lived a completely authentic life. Review : William Haines was one of MGM's biggest stars in the late s, playing cocky but sympathetic wise guys in movies such as Brown of Harvard. Here is William Haines's virtually unknown story - rich in detail, revelations, and scandal. From actor to leading Hollywood decorator, and then, finally, to an iconic legacy of strength, resistance, and honesty, William Haines lived an improbable life. The studio signed him to a contract and he moved to Hollywood. Through it all, he never disguised who he was: Off-screen, he was openly gay to reporters and studio chiefs alike, and at his side at all times was his lover, Jimmie Shields. Photo: Getty Images. Wisecracker : The Life and Times of William Haines, Hollywoods First Openly Gay Star Read Online Book Description Penguin Books. Soon he arrived in Greenwich Village, where he befriended struggling show people, including Jack Benny and Archie Leach--the future Cary Grant and one of several gay actors whose efforts to conceal their sexuality Mann cites in sad contrast to Halnes's forthrightness. Forced to give up acting, Haines went on to become a top interior designer to the stars and to clients such as Nancy Reagan. Once he got to Hollywood - care of a New Faces contest where the female winner was Eleanor Boardman, no-one beat a path to his door, unlike Boardman who was instantly picked as an up and comer - he was too carefree and trying to live the movie star life style. Eventually, after Hopewell was destroyed by fire, he moved to New York City and Greenwich Village, where his devastating good looks got him recognized. He was discovered by a talent scout and won a Goldwyn Studios contest in , sending him to Hollywood at the dawn of its golden era. The little kid, now an elderly mayor, says yes it happened like that, but before giving him a nickel, Shields took him inside and performed a sex act on him. Last edited by Clean Up Bot. His second, more successful career, was as the foremost interior decorator for the rich and famous of LA. Before reading this book, I was only vaguely aware that there was this early film star who got fired for being gay and then became an interior designer. Gone from the screen in , he became one of the 20th century's most sought-after interior decorators, and his pieces are still prized. We now know that loyalist pal Joan Crawford had her home toilet seats changed after every divorce. In William Haines was Hollywood's number-one box-office draw--a talented, handsome, romantic lead. It was in Brown that he crystalized his screen image, a young arrogant man who is humbled by the last reel. Joan Crawford described them as "the happiest married couple in Hollywood".

  • Silent Film Music and the Theatre Organ Thomas J. Mathiesen
Silent Film Music and the Theatre Organ Thomas J. Mathiesen Introduction Until the 1980s, the community of musical scholars in general regarded film music-and especially music for the silent films-as insignificant and uninteresting. Film music, it seemed, was utili tarian, commercial, trite, and manipulative. Moreover, because it was film music rather than film music, it could not claim the musical integrity required of artworks worthy of study. If film music in general was denigrated, the theatre organ was regarded in serious musical circles as a particular aberration, not only because of the type of music it was intended to play but also because it represented the exact opposite of the characteristics espoused by the Orgelbewegung of the twentieth century. To make matters worse, many of the grand old motion picture theatres were torn down in the fifties and sixties, their music libraries and theatre organs sold off piecemeal or destroyed. With a few obvious exceptions (such as the installation at Radio City Music Hall in New (c) 1991 Indiana Theory Review 82 Indiana Theory Review Vol. 11 York Cityl), it became increasingly difficult to hear a theatre organ in anything like its original acoustic setting. The theatre organ might have disappeared altogether under the depredations of time and changing taste had it not been for groups of amateurs that restored and maintained some of the instruments in theatres or purchased and installed them in other locations. The American Association of Theatre Organ Enthusiasts (now American Theatre Organ Society [ATOS]) was established on 8 February 1955,2 and by 1962, there were thirteen chapters spread across the country.

Dorothy Farnum Also Known As: Mrs. Maurice Barber Lived: June 10, 1896 - January 1970 Worked as: adapter, film actress, scenario writer, screenwriter Worked In: France, United Kingdom: England, United States by Matthew Hipps As with many women in early cinema, such as Jeanie Macpherson and Frances Marion, Dorothy Farnum’s career in Hollywood began with acting before settling into writing. Known for her intelligence and beauty, she worked well in front of the camera. From articles in the Los Angeles Times, we know that she was educated in a convent boarding school (location unknown) where Farnum mastered French history and literature and became fluent in Spanish and German (C27, 33). Although she received several offers to act and even appeared in the films Over Night (1915) and The Cub (1915), she was reported to have instead preferred writing scenarios for the silent screen. Farnum’s scenario writing career began in 1919 when she approached producer Harry Rapf with an original scenario titled The Broken Melody. Impressed with her skills, he employed Farnum at a commission of twenty-five dollars a week. Unfortunately, after just two weeks Farnum proved to be too inexperienced and was released from her contract. Rapf promised to employ her once she attained a footing in the industry and refined her trade. Farnum continued to work for a few years, steadily writing adaptations and scenarios. Finally, as reported in the Los Angeles Times, Rapf rehired her in May 1926 and gave her work on what would become one of her most renowned films: Beau Brummel (1924) starring John Barrymore (C27).
