This study explores the rise of contemporary Australian horror production: emerging production and distribution models; the films produced; and the industrial, market and technological forces driving production. Australian horror production is a vibrant production sector comprising mainstream and underground spheres of production. Mainstream horror production is an independent, internationally oriented production sector on the margins of the Australian film industry producing titles such as Wolf Creek (2005) and Rogue (2007), while underground production is a fan-based, indie filmmaking subculture, producing credit-card films such as I know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer (2006) and The Killbillies (2002). Overlap between these spheres of production, results in ‘high-end indie’ films such as Undead (2003) and Gabriel (2007) emerging from the underground but crossing over into the mainstream.

THE BABADOOK also took home the AACTA Award for Best Direction presented by Hyundai Genesis, and Best Original Screenplay. Despite a duel for Best Film, Feature Film acting awards were evenly distributed. David Gulpilil’s performance in CHARLIE’S COUNTRY saw him awarded Best Lead Actor, PREDESTINATION star Sarah Snook was awarded Best Lead Actress, Susan Prior’s performance in THE ROVER earned her Best Supporting Actress and Yilmaz Erdogan was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his role in THE WATER DIVINER. Australia’s top film and television performers and practitioners came together to honour the industry’s achievements, with a total of twenty Awards presented, following the thirty-three Awards announced at Monday’s Industry Luncheon presented by Blue Post. Some of Australia’s top film and television stars took to the stage to present Awards, including AACTA President Geoffrey Rush, Rose Byrne, George Miller, Jessica Mauboy, Stephen Curry, Marta Dusseldorp, Jessica Marais, and Culture Club’s Boy George. Paul Kelly gave a moving performance to accompany the ‘In Memoriam’ segment of the Ceremony alongside his daughters, Madeline and Memphis, and Charlie Owen.   • Stephen Curry
    Stephen Curry Award-winning actor, presenter, MC Actor and comedian Stephen Curry is one of Australia’s most popular and busiest performers since becoming a household name with his breakout role as Dale Kerrigan in the much-loved classic Australian feature film The Castle in 1996. Since then he has had leading roles in many films and television comedy and drama series and played some of our most memorable characters. In 2007 Stephen took on the challenging role of portraying one of Australia’s most legendary personalities, Graham Kennedy, in the biopic The King. He received many awards for this portrayal including an AFI Award for Best Lead Actor in a television drama, a Silver Logie Award for Most Outstanding Actor in a Drama and the ASTRA Award for Most Outstanding Performance by an Actor. As well as his many acting accomplishments, Stephen is also a very highly regarded MC and host. He was the host of the 2008 AFI Awards and has also presented numerous times at the AFI Awards, the Logies, the ASTRA Awards and the IF Awards.
