EPIC AND ROMANCE ESSAYS ON MEDIEVAL LITERATURE W. P. KER PREFACE These essays are intended as a general description of some of the principal forms of narrative literature in the Middle Ages, and as a review of some of the more interesting works in each period. It is hardly necessary to say that the conclusion is one "in which nothing is concluded," and that whole tracts of literature have been barely touched on--the English metrical romances, the Middle High German poems, the ballads, Northern and Southern--which would require to be considered in any systematic treatment of this part of history. Many serious difficulties have been evaded (in Finnesburh, more particularly), and many things have been taken for granted, too easily. My apology must be that there seemed to be certain results available for criticism, apart from the more strict and scientific procedure which is required to solve the more difficult problems of Beowulf, or of the old Northern or the old French poetry. It is hoped that something may be gained by a less minute and exacting consideration of the whole field, and by an attempt to bring the more distant and dissociated parts of the subject into relation with one another, in one view. Some of these notes have been already used, in a course of three lectures at the Royal Institution, in March 1892, on "the Progress of Romance in the Middle Ages," and in lectures given at University College and elsewhere. ETHIOPIA, TPLF AND ROOTS OF THE 2001 * POLITICAL TREMOR ** Paulos Milkias Ph.D. ©2001 Marianopolis College/Concordia University he TPLF has its roots in Marxist oriented Tigray University Students' movement organized at Haile Selassie University in 1974 under the name “Mahber Gesgesti Behere Tigray,” [generally T known by its acronym – MAGEBT, which stands for ‘Progressive Tigray Peoples' Movement’.] 1 The founders claim that even though the movement was tactically designed to be nationalistic it was, strategically, pan-Ethiopian. 2 The primary structural document the movement produced in the late 70’s, however, shows it to be Tigrayan nationalist and not Ethiopian oriented in its content. -

War and the Politics of Identity in Ethiopia: the Making of Enemies & Allies in the Horn of Africa by Kjetil Tronvoll. New York, NY: Boydell and Brewer, 2009. xiv + 239 pp. ISBN 978 1 84701 612 6. In War and the Politics of Identity in Ethiopia, Kjetil Tronvoll takes on the delicate subject of identity and politics in the Eritrea-Ethiopian context. He painstakingly examines the diverse views and sometimes contradictory comments of the Tigrinya- speaking people of Tigray in explaining the latest war with their friendly-neighbor- turned-foe Eritrea. Tronvoll makes clear from the outset the scope of his study; this book, he states, is not “about the origin or the bilateral politics of the Eritrean-Ethiopia war. Neither does it address the effect of the war as seen from the Eritrean point of view, nor how it has impacted upon Eritrean identities” (p. 3). Also, the book does not discuss the regional and international aspect of the Eritrea-Ethiopia border war and the ensuing peace process. The book is instead about finding answers to basic questions on the effect of war on identity formation. The main questions are whether the bilateral war enhanced the ideology of nationalism, thereby creating a homogenous effect on the population at large, and, more importantly, whether the war helped to create a triumphant single-enemy image, solidifying the various close ethnic loyalties to a nationalist rhetoric. In trying to tackle these intricate and intertwined issues, Tronvoll focused on the two-year border war between Eritrea and Ethiopia in 1998-2000. The primary sources that Tronvoll collected during the two-year period of active war and immediately afterwards, though useful, require a careful reading of the sentiments and aspirations of the people at the time of the interviews. -

Dr. Mesfin Araya is a professor of African and African-American Studies and Director of its Research Center at York College, CUNY. Background What is politically significant and what really attracts scholarly research in any nationalism is the awakening of the masses - i.e. the effective transition from elite-based to mass- based nationalism; this study is concerned with that transition in the Eritrean experience in the modern political history of Ethiopia. Eritrea is a multi-ethnic society comprising eight linguistic groups, but historically, the great cultural and political divide has been religion - with roughly equal population distribution between Christians and Moslems. -
Racial and Ethnic Discourses Within Seattle's Habesha Community
Re-Imagining Identities: Racial and Ethnic Discourses within Seattle’s Habesha Community Azeb Madebo Abstract My research explores the means by which identities of “non- white” Habesha (Ethiopian and Eritrean) immigrants are negotiated through the use of media, community spaces, collectivism, and activism. As subjects who do not have a longstanding historical past in the United States, Ethiopian/Eritrean immigrants face the challenges of having to re-construct and negotiate their identities within American binary Black/White racial landscapes. To explore the ways in which ethnicity- based collectivism and activism challenge stereotypical portrayals of Habeshaness and Blackness which are typically cemented through media, I focus on unpacking mediated representations of Hana Alemu Williams, her death, trial, and subsequent support from the Ethiopian Community of Seattle (ECS). Hana Alemu Williams was an Ethiopian child who died in 2011 from abuse, severe malnutrition, and cruelty at the hands of her White adoptive family in Sedro-Woolley Washington. Through close readings of various media: news paper articles, television news broadcastings, and blogs, I critically analyze the moments in which Habesha immigrants challenge narratives of race and identity in the American context. I find that while Ethiopian/Eritrean immigrants sometimes assimilate into American constructions of race, at other moments they create counter-narratives of hybridity, exclusive ethnic identities, or maintain purely national identities as Ethiopian and Eritrean immigrants, in an effort to defer perceived racial stereotypes and oppression that arise from identifying with an undifferentiated Black identity. This research enriches existing academic literature by creating a more nuanced understanding of Seattle Habesha community racial and ethnic discourses in their efforts to re-imagine Habesha identities. -
Überlegungen Zur Interpretation Von Varianten Und Von Sinnleeren Texten
UWE EBEL VORÜBERLEGUNGEN ZU EINER THEORIE DER VARIANTE IN DER LITERATUR DES ISLÄNDISCHEN MITTELALTERS Die Reflexion des Umstands, dass die mittelalterliche Literatur in Varianten überliefert wurde, wird traditionell der Editionsphilologie zugewiesen. Trügt der Eindruck nicht, dass Editionsphilologie tendenziell darauf abzielt, Varianten zu reduzieren, sie im Idealfall aufzuheben, ist ein Wesensmerkmal der Tradie- rung mittelalterlicher Literatur und damit des mittelalterlichen Textbewusst- seins der Theoretisierung nur als Ärgernis und crux zugänglich. Wenn jüngere editorische Bemühungen sich darauf richten, die Texte so aufzuarbeiten, dass das Phänomen der mouvance in die Wiedergabe hineingenommen wird, dann berücksichtigen sie zwar die Varianz als Spezifikum des mittelalterlichen Text- begriffs, sind aber ihrerseits gezwungen, solche Varianz zu reduzieren, die Varianten überschaubar zu halten und damit latent wieder aufzuheben. Das im Edieren sich manifestierende Interesse, die in der Edition sich niederschlagende Form der Traditionspflege ist, weil neuzeitlich, unaufhebbar von der unter- schieden, die das Mittelalter in seiner Weise der Textreproduktion pflegte. Die Editionsphilologie unterscheidet — und ich spreche hier von der vorherrschenden Norm, nicht von Einzelfällen — zwischen wichtigen und weniger wichtigen Varianten und privilegiert letztere, weil sie über sie die Filia- tionen der Handschriften ermitteln und bewusst veränderte Fassungen, ‛Überar- beitungen’, Vortragsversionen usw. identifizieren zu können glaubt. Das unver- kennbare und durchaus irritierende Phänomen der kleineren bis kleinsten Va- rianten wird angesichts dieser Interessenlage kaum einer theoretischen Erarbei- tung zugeführt. Es will aber eigens bedacht und ausgewertet werden, dass die Tradenten etwa schwach markierte Wörter ihrer Vorlagen übergehen oder zufügen, dass sie ihre Vorlage hinsichtlich der Satzstellung mehr oder weniger einschneidend verändern, dass sie Wörter und Wendungen durch synonyme Äquivalenzen ersetzen, und Ähnliches mehr. -

Published online 24 Novembre 2017. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17496977.2017.1374058 Abstract In the Dutch debates on Cartesianism of the 1640s, a minority believed that some Cartesian views were in fact Calvinist ones. The paper argues that, among others, a likely precursor of this position is the Aristotelian Franco Burgersdijk (1590-1635), who held a reductionist view of accidents and of the essential extension of matter on Calvinist grounds. It seems unlikely that Descartes was unaware of these views. The claim is that Descartes had two aims in his Replies to Arnauld: to show the compatibility of res extensa and the Catholic transubstantiation but also to differentiate the res extensa from some views of matter explicitly defended by some Calvinists. The association with Calvinism will be eventually used polemically against Cartesianism, for example in France. The paper finally suggests that, notwithstanding the points of conflict, the affinities between the theologically relevant theories of accidents, matter and extension ultimately facilitated the dissemination of Cartesianism among the Calvinists. A Prelude to Vatican I: American Bishops and the Definition of The
NOTE A PRELUDE TO VATICAN I: AMERICAN BISHOPS AND THE DEFINITION OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION American bishops participated in the affairs of the universal Church on a major scale for the first time at the Vatican Council of 1869-70, where their involvement dated from the arrival in Rome on November 1, 1868, of Dr. James A. Corcoran, the sole American representative on the Council's pre paratory commissions.1 The First Vatican Council climaxed a sustained campaign by Pope Pius IX against the dominant rationalist philosophy of the nineteenth century, which he had begun in the first year of his pontificate with the Encyclical Qui pluribus of November 9, 1846. The purpose of the present essay is to study the role of the American hierarchy at one significant stage in that campaign, the proceedings leading to the 1854 definition of the Immaculate Conception, and to suggest that the part played by two Ameri can bishops, Francis Patrick Kenrick of Baltimore and Michael O'Connor of Pittsburgh, foreshadowed the forthright and critical approach that many of their episcopal colleagues from the United States would take at the Council fifteen years later.2 Interesting light is also thrown on the attitude of the bishops of a century ago with regard to the collegiality of the episcopacy. Preparations for the definition of the Immaculate Conception had begun before Pius IX's flight from the Roman Revolution with the appointment on June 1,1848, of a commission to study the subject.8 While the Pope was in exile at Gaeta, he named a second commission to continue the study,4 and on February 2, 1849, he addressed to the bishops of the Catholic world the Encyclical Ubi primum, in which he asked for a report on the state of devotion to the Immaculate Conception among clergy and faithful, and also for the opinions of the bishops themselves on the projected definition.6 By 1 Cf. -

Introdução O poeta parnasiano Charles Marie René Leconte de Lisle (1818-1894) ficou mais conhecido por Leconte de Lisle, e sua obra foi influenciada pelo Simbolismo e profundamente marcada pela referência aos mitos, Ocidentais e Orientais. Os seus poemas o tornaram célebre principalmente os apresentados em três coletâneas: Poèmes antiques (1852), Poèmes barbares (1862) e Poèmes tragiques (1884) (Vianey, 1973, p. 12-20). 1 Doutora em Letras pela UFPB.
