Cook who have begun to crossover into a much larger mainstream • Further analysis and refutation of Jameson, Hutcheon CR8RFCE • The name cr8rfce takes on multiple meanings for me • –it is a reference to my horrible skin • –it is very indistinct looking, the characters almost hide from each other • –feels like a serial number or barcode or license plate ARTIST STATEMENT cr8rfce is the new beginning to a long road of music making for me. In the past four years I have had various music making experiences in multiple bands and by myself, with some moments I was incredibly proud of, and some moments that brutally damaged my creative capacity. I went through an experience that is the opposite of many people’s time at art school; I entered The University of The Arts hoping to work at a record label or music venue, but found out about 3 years in that I want to be an artist. In my time here, I have tried my hardest to absorb as much information as possible, learning new instruments, listening to as much new music as I could, and trying my hand at making absolutely anything and everything I wanted to. cr8rfce is the first phase in sharing what feels like tiny shards of myself. THE IDEA OF AUTHORSHIP The Resident’s Theory of Obscurity has come to inform the way I hope to share myself with the world, along with the Vaporwave producers of the early 2010’s who created entire communities filled with pseudonym’s and aliases. While I do not wish to, and do not think it is worth it to stick 100% to The Residents values of anonymity, I am incredibly fascinated with toying with classic notions of authorship. I love the idea of world building, due to the influence of books and video games, but also because of artists like The Residents and Ramona Xavier who have created a lore surrounding their music. I hope to create under a vast amount of aliases and in a large number of bands, creating a tree of music that spreads in unpredictable ways into unchartered territories. The intention is for a show that is never the same thing- I have a large enough array of material and a vast amount of ways to improvise and hope to put on shows where people truly do not know what to expect. I was very into booking shows for a bit while I had a house I could do that in, and I have always been a large proprietor of mixed genre shows, and I fully intend to carry that spirit on as an artist. COPYRIGHT + ROYALTY COLLECTION I have placed a copyright on the sound recording + composition of 8 songs already, and have become a registered member of BMI who has approved all of my works that are about to be released. I am copyrighting works in bunches because I have very little money to my name and it is more expensive than I would like. Currently I am waiting to finish about 3 more songs until I have a full 10 to do another round of copyrighting. I have also registered for the Harry Fox Agency, Soundexchange, Audiam, and Songfile, and am exploring ways I can license and monetize my music creatively. I would love to help provide music for film/video games at some point in my life. DISTRIBUTION Using Routenote for free distribution to major streaming services. Compared with other sites but went with them due to their reputation, cleanness of website and process, and past experience. I attempted a few 100% cut websites and found them messy and complicated.     !1 of !7 Simon DeBevoise Artist Statement Prof. Maria Sonevytsky 12.12.15 blssm: An Exploration of Cuteness, Consumer Culture and PC Music blssm is an experiment in aesthetics. Tackling a genre of unlimited ambition and excess, I realized quickly that my project could not be a limp imitation of PC Music; the music mandates instead a full-fledged devotion to the “kitsch imagery, catchy hooks, synthetic colours” (Tank Magazine, AG Cook) so central to figures like AG Cook, Hannah Diamond, SOPHIE and GFOTY. I used Hannah Diamond’s “Every Night” as an aural point of reference, reinterpreting the song’s poppy chord progression and setting my tempo to an upbeat 128 bpm. Layering big, shimmering, sawtooth synths over a syncopated kick drum and bass, I created a foundation with which I could engage with the camp and consumerism typically antithetical to the underground music scene yet so integral to the PC Music label. Recreating PC Music’s visual and aural aesthetic, I aim to consider the issues of gender and sexuality at play by framing the genre within discourses on Studio Audio Art, Cyborg Feminism, Japanese Kawaii culture, consumerism, and post-irony. To best introduce the uninformed listener to PC Music (which, importantly, stands for computer music and not politically correct music), I’ve included lyrics from Hannah Diamond’s “Pink and Blue:” We look good in pink and blue You love me, maybe it's true You say, ‘Baby, how are you?’ I’m okay, how about you? DeBevoise !2 of !7 Diamond’s facile rhymes and innocent lyrics craft an image of cuteness and middle-school naivety that play into PC Music’s brand of femininity.

Hendry The Information School Although music is considered to be an important part of adolescence and young adulthood, little is known about music and homeless youth. Accordingly, this dissertation research investigated the role of music in the lives of homeless young people, aged 15-25. The study was conducted in Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia and engaged homeless young people (n=202) and service providers staff who work at agencies that provide support for homeless young people (n=24). Homeless young people completed surveys (n=202), design activities, which included drawing and story writing (n=149), and semi-structured interviews (n=40). Service providers completed semi-structured interviews (n=24). Data analysis included descriptive analysis of survey data and qualitative coding of the design activities and interview responses. Findings indicated that music was an important part of everyday life for homeless young people, who listened to music daily (98%), owned music players (89%), and had wide- ranging and eclectic tastes in music which did not vary based on location.

The editors of this paper recognise that, as a team of settlers occupying the lands of the Bidjigal, Darug, Gadigal, Wangal and Wallumedegal people, we are beneficiaries of these reverberations that followed European settlement. As we strive throughout the year to offer a platform to the voices mainstream media ignores, we cannot meet this goal without providing a space for First Nations people to share their experiences and perspectives. A student paper which does not acknowledge historical and ongoing colonisation and the white supremacy embedded within Australian society can never adequately represent the students of the institution in which it operates. We seek to resist colonial violence and the racist power structures that serve to oppress those who are Indigenous to this land. Sovereignty was never ceded.
