Author: (signature) (date) ./ ABSTRACT Studies on the acculturation of immigrants and refugees have been particularly concerned with the experiences of -<-- -<-- adults to the detriment of children and adolescents. Research which focus on the experiences of adolescent to a few studies. This thesis examines the $cculturatiqn experiences of a group of twenty-two -- "/. adolescent ~ietnamesegirls of Chinese ethnicity living in the Greater Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada. Semi-structured interviews of approximately forty-five minutes each elicited information regarding the girls' perceptions of their adjustment to life in Canada. The data have been analyzed qualitatively with respect to the subjects' relationships with their families, and with the school and their peers. The focus of this research is on - - . - . - bicultural conflict, and the extent to which this conflict 7 - -- .- .-- -- - is felt by the girls varies. While some girls appear to ---._I_" have rejected completely their traditional culture, the majority have in fact attained bicultural identity. Findings from the study indicate that there is no single cause of conflict for the subjects interviewed. While the conflicts experienced can be classified as: (a) iii intergenerational, (b) authority, and (c)\ bicultural, the sources of conflict are related to: (a) misunderstandings in parent/adolescent communication patterns, (b) gender: particularly with respect to role evaluations, (c) the girls* relationships and mobility outside the home, (d) disparity in values between the girls and their parents, and (e) differential rates of acculturation between parents and their daughters. The findings indicate a link between the division of household labour and acculturation with respect to the girls' responsibility for housework and child care. While parents advocate delegating sizable amounts of housework and J child care to girls, where there are male siblings, conflict based on unequal expectations from household duties exists. The girls1 perceptions of unequal treatment in the family between themselves and their male siblings reflect other interpersonal and child rearing issues beyond the division of household tasks, but gender relations complicate this burden. This thesis argues that while Canadian adolescent girls generally, are confronted with choices related to traditional versus non-traditional values, these Vietnamese girls seem to be faced with the dilemma of coping with parental expectations and the appeal of adolescent culture as they strive to balance the norms and values of their Vietnamese culture with those of Canadian society generally. The combination of these elements appear,to contribute to adjustment difficulties for some girls. While the majority of subjects expressed traditional views regarding the primacy of family life, these girls also have plans to combine their occupational and family roles, and they indicate their awareness of structural changes in gender relations in Canadian society, especially with respect to the growing impact in selective families on the traditional division of labour in the home. The Vietnamese girls who were youngest upon their arrival in Canada appear to experience a greater degree of bicultural conflict. Adopting a critical ethnography methodology and discourse analysis, this study asks: What are the conditions of community conflicts within the Vietnamese community and how are those conflicts related to the processes of Canadian national identity formation? The production and contestation of Vietnamese Canadian subjectivity in the making of Canadian national identity is traced through three major sites of analysis. This first site is the debate on the Memorial to Victims of Communism as captured in the media. The second site is the parliamentary and community commemoration of the “Fall of Saigon” on April 30th, 1975 which includes debates on the Journey to Freedom Day Act and local community events. The final site is a Toronto community agency conflict of identity. This study reveals the logic of racial capitalist democracy underlying Canadian national identity as free, humanitarian, democratic, and peace-making. This is constructed through the production of Vietnamese Canadian subjectivity as a particular model minority and model refugee framed within Cold War neoliberal and multicultural discourse with significant consequences to the wellbeing of the community.

    EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT AMONG ASIAN CANADIANS Racial stereotypes have characterized the North American Asian population ever since these ethnic groups began arriving on the continent in large numbers (Lee 2000). The earliest stereotypes emerged with the rapid influx of Chinese immigration to California and British Columbia during the 19th century, and were guided by the white population’s xenophobia attitudes and fear that Asians would eventually displace the dominance of European ethno- cultural groups in the overall population. Throughout this historical period, the most common perception among white North Americans was that Asians and Asian immigration represented a threat to the existing social and economic order. The white majority reacted by excluding Asians from their society through racist immigration policies, social segregation, economic discrimination, and even violence. Since this time, how Asians are perceived in the popular imagination has changed, but stereotypical attitudes and misconceptions remain. While the crude image of the “pigtailed coolie” is fortunately no longer influential, the “model minority” stereotype is now commonplace (Wong 1980). The model minority stereotype, which started to become popular in the 1970s, is based on the wide-spread belief that Asians are inherently intelligent, hard-working, and reserved over- achievers (Wong et al. 1998). On the surface, the assumptions behind the model minority concept appear to harbour positive ethnic stereotypes (what minority group would resent being described as intelligent and hard-working?) that are rooted in empirical trends within the US population. For example, Asian Americans have greatly out-preformed the majority population since the 1930s in educational attainment (Hirschman and Wong 1986).

    Gablenz 1 Adieu Saïgon: Exploring Identities and Images of Homes Among Vietnamese Québécois Neil G. Gablenz The State University of New York at Buffalo Between 2009-2010, a new Québécoise writer astounded readers and critics alike with her breakout novel Ru. This autofiction presented as a memoir composed of non-linear vignettes tells the story of a former Vietnamese refugee, her journey to Québec with her family, and the birth of her sons in Québec which leads her to critically examine her own identity. She does not want her sons to be ignorant of their Vietnamese heritage, but she also does not want them to differentiate or Gablenz 2 separate themselves from the native and non-native Québécois around them. After all, this woman considers Québec her home— she has Québécois friends, Québécois lovers, and Québécois children. When she has the opportunity to permanently relocate to Vietnam, she ultimately returns to Montréal. This, of course, does not suggest that she no longer considers herself Vietnamese, it simply demonstrates that she considers herself, to a certain extent, Québécoise as well. The story of the protagonist in Ru is not an unusual one. Many former immigrants and refugees from Vietnam have been faced with such situations since their arrival in Québec following the end of the Vietnam War and the subsequent reunification of the country as a socialist republic governed by an oppressive regime of self-proclaimed communists. As populations of ethnic Vietnamese residents in Québec grew in numbers between the 1980s and the early 2000s, Québécois anthropologists have taken an interest in studying this emerging ethnic group and how they go about their lives as exiles from their native country.

Vietnamese Diaspora Intellectuals (VDI) are an understudied group, and I hope my research will help to fill this gap, at least in part, and also serve as a catalyst for further investigation. In my attempt to address this neglected area of study, I am bringing together two bodies of literature: diaspora studies and literature on identity formation among intellectuals. The intersection between these two areas of scholarship has received relatively little attention in the past, and it deserves further consideration, because intellectuals are so often in a position to serve as carriers and disseminators of new ideas, as well as facilitators in conflict resolution.

Interestingly, Ukraine, her grandfather’s homeland, has remained the central theme in her works ever since the publication of the picturebook Silver Threads in 1996. The author of this essay argues that by telling the sup- pressed, untold stories, hence bringing attention to the next-generation memory of the traumatic experiences of Ukrainian Canadians, Skrypuch puts them on the landscape of Canadian collective and cultural memory and challenges the false generalizations attributed to Ukrainians and Ukrain- ian Canadians in North America after the Second World War. After briefly outlining the history of Ukrainian immigration to Canada, and explaining the roots of the negative stereotypes attributed to Ukrainians, the author analyzes Hope’s War (2001), Skrypuch’s first Ukrainian-themed novel, and shows that by highlighting the unexpected similarities between the experiences of the protag- onist’s grandfather, who during the Second World War was a member of the UPA, and the anxieties of contemporary teenagers, Skrypuch evokes empathy in mainstream
