SPURGEON AT EXETER HALL, STRAND “Come, see the place where the Lord lay.” Matthew 28:6 EVERY circumstance connected with the life of Christ is deeply interesting to the Christian mind. Wherever we behold our Savior, He is well worthy of our notice “His cross, His manger, and His crown, Are big with glories yet unknown.” All His weary pilgrimage, from Bethlehem’s manger to Calvary’s cross, is in my eyes, paved with glory. Each spot upon which He trod is to our souls consecrated at once, simply because there the foot of earth’s Savior and our own Redeemer once was placed. When He comes to Calvary, the interest thickens, then our best thoughts are centered on Him in the agonies of crucifixion, nor does our deep affection permit us to leave Him even when, the struggle being over, He yields up the ghost. His body, when it is taken down from the tree, still is lovely in our eyes—we fondly linger around the motionless clay. By faith we discern Joseph of Arimathea and the timid Nicodemus, assisted by those holy women, drawing out the nails and taking down the mangled body. We behold them wrapping Him in clean white linen, hastily girding Him round with belts of spices, then putting Him in His tomb and departing for the Sabbath rest. We shall on this occasion go where Mary went on the morning of the first day of the week, when waking from her couch before the dawn, she aroused herself to be early at the sepulchre of Jesus. -

WALKING THE VIA DOLOROSA Scripture: Hebrews 10:-16-25 Good Friday, April 10, 2020 Walking with Jesus on this last day of his earthly, human life, I remember walking the Via Dolorosa, the Way of Sorrow. I have participated in many services and rituals of The Stations of the Cross both as an Episcopalian and a Methodist. My first experience was opening night of my Cursillo (the Episcopal version of Road to Emmaus). It was after dinner and introductions when we went to the chapel for what I thought would be an Evening Prayer Service. It wasn't. It was the Stations of the Cross: scripture and a reading about each station. After this service, we retired, in silence, to our cells (we were in a monastery) for the night. I had been overwhelmed by emotions during the readings. Never had the story of Jesus’ last walk been so powerful. Until, that is, I walked the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem in April 1989. Jesus, the incarnate Son of God, walking these rough stone streets, bearing his cross, stumbling, falling, rising again and again as He willingly walks to his death. His death for me. Women along the way wept for him. Tradition says one even reached out and wiped his face, trying to clean off the blood and sweat and tears. Others in the crowd reviled and mocked him. Where would I have been? How would I have behaved? Would I have had love and courage enough to go to him, to wipe his face? Or would I have been a part of the mob that shouted “Crucify”? Would I have stood watch on Golgotha with Mary and John? It was not that long ago for us that we remember Mary “pondering all these things in her heart” after the visitation of the shepherds and then the Magi. -

1 WHERE IS CALVARY? MARK 15:22 / 9-20-17 / WED INTRODUCTION A. All four gospels give the name of the place Jesus was crucified. 1. Three call it “Golgotha”—Mark 15:22 (Matt. 27:33; John 19:17) 2. All four say it was “the place of the skull.” a. “Golgotha” is an Aramaic word for “a bare skull”. b. Our English version is a transliteration of this Aramaic word. Cleve Haley ! 9/19/2017 6:25 AM c. Only Luke calls it “Calvary” in the KJV.—Luke 23:33 KJV Comment [1]: B. What other clues does the Bible give? 1. First, it was outside the city—John 19:20 and Hebrews 13:12. 2. Second, it was near a well-traveled road—Matt. 27:39; Mark 15:21, 29-30. 3. Third, it was probably on a hill because it was visible from a distance—Mark 15:40. 4. Fourth, it was near a garden that had a new tomb—John 19:41. I. THE TRADITIONAL SITE IS THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE. A. This church has a long standing tradition dating back to the time of Constantine, the first Roman Emperor to profess Christianity (A.D. 325). B. According to that tradition, Constantine sent his mother, Helena, to Jerusalem in A.D. 326 to locate holy sites of the Christian faith. C. In 135 A.D. Christians in Judea revolted against Roman rule. The Emperor at that time was Hadrian. He subsequently ordered a temple to Venus also known as Aphrodite be built over Golgotha. -

PSALM 16: Gethsemane, Gabbatha, Golgotha, the “Garden Tomb,” and the Glory Gordon Franz Introduction On occasions I teach a class on Christian Apologetics. The first assignment I give the students is to read through the entire Book of Acts and note each encounter that believers in the Lord Jesus Christ have with the unsaved in the book. The students are to make a list with: (1) the Christians who are doing the witnessing, (2) the unbelievers bring witnessed to, (3) what the apologetics are that the believers are using, (4) and what the response of the unsaved is to their message. The two main apologetics used by the Early Church in the Book of Acts are: first, the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ; and second, the fulfillment of Bible prophecy. Psalm 16 is quoted on two occasions in the Book of Acts in order to demonstrate that the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus was the fulfillment of this psalm, predicted almost a thousand years before it happened. The first time the psalm is quoted is in Acts 2, Peter’s sermon on the day of Shavuot (Pentecost). The second time it is quoted is in Acts 13 when the Apostle Paul preached in the synagogue of Psidia Antioch on his first missionary journey. Superscription The superscription of Psalm 16 reads, michtam le David. The verbal root for the word “michtam” is to inscribe, to engrave, or write, like on a stele. One gets the impression of an inscription on a victory stele. A stele is an upright stone slab or pillar that has an inscription or some kind of design on it that serves as a monument for propaganda purposes or for veneration. -

(bestoflifeonline.com) On my first study visit to Israel, we had a Palestinian guide named Michael. Our driver’s name was Mafouz. Michael was a learned Palestinian Christian. Mafouz spoke very little English, but he was fearless in city traffic and narrow streets. He was very fast on the freeway. When it was time to depart one site and head for another, Michael would say, “Mafouz, push gaz!” And off we would go on another adventure. Our guide referred to Israel, especially Jerusalem, as the place of stones. He was speaking of the stone altars built by the patriarchs and the piles of commemorative rocks put up at times and places important to God’s people, as when Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan River. Michael noted that the massive walls of Jericho, Jerusalem and Hebron are all made of stone. Also, stoning was the method of execution for Israelites who broke the Law. Even the courtyard where Jesus was tried, Gabbatha or LIthostrotos (meaning pavement) is composed of stones worn smooth by the feet of ancient peoples. Stones are everywhere in the Holy Land. Today we approach the names of Jesus that refer to the stones of the ANE. He is called the Rock of Ages. He is also called the Chief Cornerstone. If we took time to list all the symbolic and metaphorical names of God in Scripture, we would be here all day. -

MOTYER It is a problem common to the study of all prophetic texts how to make a legitimate appeal to the work of editors and insertionists in order to understand the meaning of a passage or section. Regarding the passage in hand, for example, Duhm proposes that verse 17 is a glossator's clumsy attempt to link Isaiah 7:1-16 with 18-25, and considers verses 18-25 to be the work of 'a collector of Isaianic fragments'.1 Kissane, however, urges that 'the problem here is really one of inter- pretation' and further comments: 'Various critics omit 15 or 16 or 16b or 17; but the sole reason for the omission is the diffi- culty of interpretation.'2 The matter may be put thus: it is not that the concept of the editing of a prophetic text or book is itself at fault, but that it appears not to be taken with sufficient seriousness by those who appeal most frequently to it. The 'editor' must not be made a scapegoat. Rather than treat him as one who juxta- posed two passages which seemed to him to be coherent but are easily seen by us not to be so, we should and must assume him to be an intelligent publicist of the mind and matter of his subject. And if, as seems to be the case, there is increasing readiness to allow that the prophets could and did act as their own editors, then all the more must we seek to implement the principle of the priority of exegetical considerations. -

1 Allan MacRae, Isaiah 7-12: Lecture 4 This is lecture 4 delivered by Dr. Allan MacRae at Biblical Theological Seminary on Isaiah 7-12: Now I want to say a few words about the assignment for today. There was much variety in the answers, as would be expected. Most of these assignments are not a test on how well you can do anything but they are intended to get you into the problem, to get you to try to see what you can do with it, and to get the problems in your mind so that then we can discuss them intelligently together. Now in this course there is one thing we can all agree on: that chapters 7-12 are one unit. We don’t have time in this class to look at what follows and precedes to see evidence for that, but it is definitely one unit. Perhaps on the scale we were using you would need 4 lines before and after chapters 7-12, then within that area there are many short sections, some of which belong rather closely together. So there are many places where we could make a small division, but knowing where the larger division should be made is not easy. I think the archbishop did one of the worst jobs he did in the Bible in this section, chapters 7-12, because there is only one of the chapter divisions which seems to be reasonably placed. Just briefly we will glance at that now. You will notice that in chapter 7 we are reading about the attack being made by the people from Samaria and from Damascus and how God is going to protect Judah from them. -
