Johann Nepomuk Hummel was a noted Austrian composer and piano virtuoso who not only wrote substantially for the instrument, but also transcribed a series of important orchestral pieces. Among them are two transcriptions of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 36- the first a version for piano solo and the second a work for piano quartet, with flute substituting for the traditional viola part. This study will examine Hummel’s treatment of the symphony in both transcriptions, looking at a variety of pianistic devices in the solo piano version and his particular instrumentation choices in the quartet version. Each of these transcriptions can serve a particular purpose for performers. The solo piano version is an obvious virtuoso vehicle, whereas the quartet version can be a refreshing program alternative in a piano quartet concert. -

Anadolu University, Turkey https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5792-2100 [email protected] ABSTRACT The piano, which is a solo instrument that takes part in educational process, can take role not only in instrumental education but also in chamber music education as well with the 6-hands pieces for three players that perform same composition on a single instrument. According to the international 6-hands piano literature, although the works of Alfred Schnittke's Hommage, Carl Czerny's Op.17 and 741, Paul Robinson's Pensees and Montmartre and many more are included, the Turkish piano literature has been found to have a limited number of compositions. The aim of the work is to contribute to the field by presenting musical analysis about the place and the importance of the educational use of the works composed for 6-hands which are extremely rare in the Turkish piano literature. As an example, the piece named Sky composed by Hasan Barış Gemici is considered. Analysis is supported by comparative methods in form, structuralism, rhythm, theoretical applications and performance; it also gives information about basic playing techniques. It is thought that this study carries importance in contributing to the limited number of Turkish 6-hands piano literature and researchers who will conduct research in this regard, in terms of creating resources for performers and composers who will interpret the literature. -

ABSTRACT Title of Document: THE PEDAGOGICAL LEGACY OF JOHANN NEPOMUK HUMMEL. Jarl Olaf Hulbert, Doctor of Philosophy, 2006 Directed By: Professor Shelley G. Davis School of Music, Division of Musicology & Ethnomusicology Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837), a student of Mozart and Haydn, and colleague of Beethoven, made a spectacular ascent from child-prodigy to pianist- superstar. A composer with considerable output, he garnered enormous recognition as piano virtuoso and teacher. Acclaimed for his dazzling, beautifully clean, and elegant legato playing, his superb pedagogical skills made him a much sought after and highly paid teacher. This dissertation examines Hummel’s eminent role as piano pedagogue reassessing his legacy. Furthering previous research (e.g. Karl Benyovszky, Marion Barnum, Joel Sachs) with newly consulted archival material, this study focuses on the impact of Hummel on his students. Part One deals with Hummel’s biography and his seminal piano treatise, Ausführliche theoretisch-practische Anweisung zum Piano- Forte-Spiel, vom ersten Elementar-Unterrichte an, bis zur vollkommensten Ausbildung, 1828 (published in German, English, French, and Italian). Part Two discusses Hummel, the pedagogue; the impact on his star-students, notably Adolph Henselt, Ferdinand Hiller, and Sigismond Thalberg; his influence on musicians such as Chopin and Mendelssohn; and the spreading of his method throughout Europe and the US. Part Three deals with the precipitous decline of Hummel’s reputation, particularly after severe attacks by Robert Schumann. His recent resurgence as a musician of note is exemplified in a case study of the changes in the appreciation of the Septet in D Minor, one of Hummel’s most celebrated compositions. -

Guide to Repertoire The chamber music repertoire is both wonderful and almost endless. Some have better grips on it than others, but all who are responsible for what the public hears need to know the landscape of the art form in an overall way, with at least a basic awareness of its details. At the end of the day, it is the music itself that is the substance of the work of both the performer and presenter. Knowing the basics of the repertoire will empower anyone who presents concerts. Here is a run-down of the meat-and-potatoes of the chamber literature, organized by instrumentation, with some historical context. Chamber music ensembles can be most simple divided into five groups: those with piano, those with strings, wind ensembles, mixed ensembles (winds plus strings and sometimes piano), and piano ensembles. Note: The listings below barely scratch the surface of repertoire available for all types of ensembles. The Major Ensembles with Piano The Duo Sonata (piano with one violin, viola, cello or wind instrument) Duo repertoire is generally categorized as either a true duo sonata (solo instrument and piano are equal partners) or as a soloist and accompanist ensemble. For our purposes here we are only discussing the former. Duo sonatas have existed since the Baroque era, and Johann Sebastian Bach has many examples, all with “continuo” accompaniment that comprises full partnership. His violin sonatas, especially, are treasures, and can be performed equally effectively with harpsichord, fortepiano or modern piano. Haydn continued to develop the genre; Mozart wrote an enormous number of violin sonatas (mostly for himself to play as he was a professional-level violinist as well). -

The Piano Sonatas by Harold Shapero: a Stylistic Synthesis
THE PIANO SONATAS BY HAROLD SHAPERO: A STYLISTIC SYNTHESIS BY CHIA-YING CHAN DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Music with a concentration in Performance and Literature in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2017 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Timothy Ehlen, Chair and Director of Research Professor William Kinderman Professor Charlotte Mattax Moersch Associate Professor Reynold Tharp ABSTRACT This research project offers an investigation into the stylistic language of the piano sonatas of Harold Shapero (1920-2013)—a twentieth-century American composer who is recognized as a member of the “Stravinsky School,” particularly for his emulation of Stravinsky’s Neoclassical style. Within its consideration of Neoclassical elements in Shapero’s work, this project looks at Shapero’s synthesis of elements and features from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, including compositional features connected with Stravinsky, Beethoven, J. S. Bach and others. All of Shapero’s piano sonatas are considered in this study, including the Sonata for Piano Four Hands (1941), the Three Amateur Sonatas (1944), and the Piano Sonata in F Minor (1948). These piano sonatas allow for an investigation of Shapero’s stylistic features and illustrate the composer’s overall stylistic evolution. Some attention is given to connections between the piano sonatas. Shapero’s final Piano Sonata in F Minor represents a compositional culmination -

SESSION SIX – NEGLECTED GENDER OF PIANO, FOUR HANDS NEGLECTED GENRE: MUSIC FOR PIANO DUET Today we will listen to and discuss a neglected genre, piano duets, that is, music for two players at one piano, also referred to as “piano, four hands.” Compositions of this genre sound somewhat different from those in another neglected genre, two piano music, meaning two players at two pianos. WHY THIS GENRE? With the rise of the middle class in Europe in the 1770s, there were suddenly many more people, especially women and girls, who had enough leisure time to learn to play the piano. This new musical market was served by a group of new businesses including piano manufacturers, piano tuners, piano teachers – and of course, composers who wrote music for these pianists to play. Soon these pianists want to play for their friends. A large amount of solo piano music existed, but playing the piano was, then as now, a solitary activity. Clearly it was more social, and more fun, to play with another pianist of about the same ability. And the music made by two players at one piano sounded bigger, more impressive, than piano solos. And so, ever since the 1770’s composers have written music to be played by two players at one piano. WHY NEGLECTED? Now, let’s jump ahead to the present. In today’s musical world, music for piano, four hands is still being written. But we seldom hear it in concerts, on CD’s or on the radio. Why should this be so? The reasons are both practical and financial: • First, of course, it takes two performers of similar ability to learn the music • Once each pianist has learned his or her part, there is a rehearsal period in which the two practice synchronizing their playing so they are absolutely together and deal with the many technical problems, such as keeping out of each other’s way. -
Touch Divided: Artistic Research in Duo Piano Performance
1 TOUCH DIVIDED: ARTISTIC RESEARCH IN DUO PIANO PERFORMANCE Dr. Anna Grinberg D.M.A., A.D., M.M., BMus. A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2016 School of Music Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences 1 2 Abstract This thesis is situated within the paradigm of artistic research. It is a project in which the practice, processes and products of two-piano and piano duet performance constitute the research context, method and outcomes. The research was conducted through the activity of the Viney-Grinberg Piano Duo, of which the author is a member. The thesis is comprised of a folio of three artistic outputs in the form of recordings of musical performances, which are contextualised in a critical commentary. As a contribution to artistic knowledge, the thesis aims to “assemble” ideas and meanings around the recorded performances as a way of illuminating tacit knowledge embedded in the artistic objects, and to articulate implications of that knowledge for two-piano and duet performance. The research draws on the performative turn in musicology, construing performance as a creative rather than merely re-creative act, and recognising the ontological and epistemological potential of music performance as a knowledge outcome. Artistic research methods underpin the artistic outputs, which are discussed in relation to broader theoretical frameworks. The commentary interprets the outputs in relation to the work of scholars such as John Rink, Nicholas Cook, Vera John-Steiner and Edward Cone. The work of Henk Borgdorff, and the voices of Immanuel Kant and Theodor Adorno inform the conceptualisation of art and knowledge that underpins both the artistic outputs and the commentary.
