Alternate reality games or ARGs are a unique form of game that enables people to collaboratively play a game that is not a game in the context of the real world. To understand ARGs one needs to understand what differentiates them from other types of games as well as what makes them games. The research investigates existing literature of alternate reality games as well literature in the field of game studies to develop a set of characteristics for alternate reality games based on game design theory. Case studies are done on three different ARGs and summaries for the games are created. The phenomena in the summaries are placed into categories and subcategories. The categories and subcategories are developed by analysing the game summaries using constant comparative analysis. Using the categories, subcategories and the relationship between them, diagrams are created for each of the studied ARGs. A detailed analysis of each game is done and a summary diagram is created for each game. The summary diagrams are then combined to create a generalizable diagram for ARGs. The combination of the theoretical framework developed during the literature study together with the generalizable diagram from the analysis of the three games are then combined to create a conceptual framework. The conceptual framework creates a deeper understanding of ARGs and the various phenomena found within them by building on game design theory found in the field of game studies. The conceptual framework can aid in the creation of ARGs as well as enable the further analysis of these games. Thank you to my own personal librarians, Lourina de Beer (my mother) and Erica van der Westhuizen for helping me search through all the content and for proof reading my work. To the professors in the Department of Information Science at the University of Pretoria, thank you for helping me think through this and for keeping it all in perspective (Prof. Ina Fourie, Prof. Fanie de Beer and Prof. Theo Bothma). The same goes to the almost professors, Dr. Marlene Holmner and Dr. Cecilia Penzhorn. Finally, I would like to thank my friend and mentor, Nelis Franken. It is thanks to you that I was able to embark on this journey and learn the things I did. If it wasn’t for our “what about alternate reality games” discussion, I would not be where I am today. iii © University of Pretoria Contents Declaration .............................................................................................................................................. i Abstract .................................................................................................................................................. ii Acknowledgement ............................................................................................................................... iii List of figures and tables ...................................................................................................................... x List of tables ........................................................................................................................................ x List of figures....................................................................................................................................... x 1 Chapter 1 - Informatic Afterlives and Database Erotics: The Performativity of Surveillance in Economies of Fidelity Sean Jarvis A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2020 Reading Committee: Nancy J. Kenney, Co-Chair Amanda Lock Swarr, Co-Chair Chandan Reddy Shirley Yee Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies 1 ©Copyright 2020 Sean Jarvis 2 University of Washington Abstract Informatic Afterlives and Database Erotics: The Performativity of Surveillance in Economies of Fidelity Sean Jarvis Chairs of the Supervisory Committee Nancy J. Kenney Amanda Lock Swarr Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies Informatic Aterlives and Database Erotics explores the tension between coercive documentation and violent erasure in surveillance studies by centralizing the role of the body in the political and cultural transformations that have accompanied the rise of mass surveillance. Through an interdisciplinary exploration of queer historiography, legal history, and affect theory, I use the surveilled body as a central text through which to explain the rise of a mode of governance in 3 which mass surveillance is preferable not just to the state, but to many of the populations it governs. Using a queer and feminist lens, I argue that, as mass surveillance has permeated the interactions of both citizens and noncitizens with state institutions, surveillance has gained a performative function, in addition to the inquisitive role it has historically served. This performativity means that surveillance isn’t just a means of acquiring information on behalf of state institutions but a mechanism of reification for the power of those institutions to ask invasive questions and collect personal data.

  • "The Maternal Death Drive: Greta Thunberg and the Question of the Future" (2020)
Original Article The maternal death drive: Greta Thunberg and the question of the future Lisa Baraitser Department of Psychosocial Studies, Birkbeck, University of London, London, UK. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The centenary of Freud’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle (Freud, 1920a/ 1955) falls in 2020, a year dominated globally by the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the effects of the pandemic has been to reveal the increasingly fragile interconnectedness of human and non-human life, as well as the ongoing effects of social inequalities, particularly racism, on the valuing of life and its flourishing. Drawing on earlier work, this paper develops the notion of a ‘maternal death drive’ that supplements Freud’s death drive by accounting for repetition that retains a relation to the developmental time of ‘life’ but remains ‘otherwise’ to a life drive. The temporal form of this ‘life in death’ is that of ‘dynamic chronicity’, analogous to late modern narratives that describe the present as ‘thin’ and the time of human futurity as running out. I argue that the urgency to act on the present in the name of the future is simultaneously ‘suspended’ by the repetitions of late capitalism, leading to a temporal hiatus that must be embraced rather than simply lamented. The maternal (death drive) alerts us to a new figure of a child whose task is to carry expectations and anxieties about the future and bind them into a reproductive present. Rather than seeing the child as a figure of normativity, I turn to Greta Thunberg to signal a way to go on in suspended ‘grey’ time.
