Heavy rains in the past week have resulted in triggering flash floods as well as riverine floods in several parts of the country but the worst affected areas are in the provinces of Punjab and Baluchistan. Local authorities and armed forces are responding. The Pakistan Meteorological office is forecasting a heavier than usual monsoon season. UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that the humanitarian agencies are working with the government and provincial authorities in preparedness planning. At least 52 people were feared drowned in the flood water in different areas of Barkhan, Kohlu and Sibbi districts of Baluchistan. Thirty dead bodies have been recovered but more than 20 are still missing. Most of the land routes linking the flood affected regions of the three districts are disrupted making thousands of local residents marooned. Heavy rains were also reported in nearby districts of Sibi and Kohlu where one of the seasonal rivers—Nari River—is carrying a flood of 120,000 cusecs in the downstream devastating many villages and human settlements in Kachhi Plains. In Sibi, Talli bank and Nari River had breached in banks causing heavy flood in several villages including Talli village, Sultan Kot, Machi Kho, Sivi, Basti Palwan Khan, Chandio, Marri Kot, Ghaffar Kot, Mitari, Leyhri and Ghot Fateh Mohammed. Talli village was completely submerged in flood water. People are trapped and marooned in the flood and took refuge on top of their houses and mosques. They also took their animals to safer place following death of hundreds of cattle. In Kohlu, Tanga dam had exploded due to which seven villages inundated and hundreds of mud houses had been washed away. Three people suffered injuries in rain-related incidents and most of the people took refuge on top of the nearby hills. Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Hassan Baloch has said that two helicopters and six loaded trucks with relief goods had been dispatched to the Barkhan and Sibi. Türkiye Parazitoloji Dergisi, 30 (1): 1 - 6, 2006 Acta Parasitologica Turcica © Türkiye Parazitoloji Derneği © Turkish Society for Parasitology Geographical Distribution of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis and Sand Flies in Pakistan Ashraf SHAKİLA1, Fatima Mujib BİLQEES2, Azra SALİM3, Moinuddin4 1Institute of Hematology, Baqai Medical Karachi, Pakistan, 2Department of Zoology Jinnah University for Women Karachi; 3Jinnah University for Women Karachi, Pakistan, 4Institute of Haematology Baqai Medical University, Pakistan SUMMARY: Cutaneous leishmaniasis is found in all the four provinces of Pakistan; these are NWFP, Balochistan, Sindh and Punjab. In Balochistan the areas from where the patients came are Uthal, Quetta and Ormara. The highest number of patients came from Quetta and least from Ormara. The patients included in this study were from the Mangopir and Chakewara, areas of Karachi. The infection is endemic in this country and the recent epidemics in the Dadu District and Nawabshah indicate its importance in the locality. The sand fly vector is found in all four provinces of Pakistan that are listed here. It is quite obvious that presence of leishmaniasis indicates the presence of sand flies and cutaneous leishmaniasis is more common. Key Words: Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, sand fly, geographical distribution, Pakistan Pakistan’da Kutanöz Leishmaniasis ve Kum Sineklerinin Coğrafik Dağılımı ÖZET: Kutanöz leishmaniasis, Pakistan’ın NWFP, Balochistan, Sindh ve Punjab bölgelerinde görülmektedir.
