J. P College of Arts & Science is an institution of DFT foundation under the congregation of DMI and MMI. Daughter of Mary Immaculate and Collaborators (DMI) and Missionaries of Mary Immaculate and Collaborators (MMI) are international Religious congregations approved by the authority of His Holiness the Pope through the respective dioceses of the Catholic Church to work internationally. Rev. Fr. J.E. ARULRAJ the Founder and Chairman of DFT group of Institutions has a vision to provide disciplined life with a spiritual base to remain fully alive and fully human. JP College of Arts & Science offers superlative conditions to students to pursue their academic programme. The college was started in the year 2007 by Grace Swaminathan Educational & Charitable Trust as a Christian Minority Institution. From the year 2012 the college is managed by DMI Foundation Trust. JP College of Arts and Science, established in the year 2007, is affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. All colleges in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari Districts come under the Jurisdiction of this University.

The introduction of the Semester System gives the students an opportunity for in-depth study of the portions of the syllabus during specified period of time and continuous assessment by the teachers.

An academic year is divided into two semesters. The Semester consists of 90 working days excluding the semester examination days. Theses 90 days are divided into 15 cycles, each cycle consisting of 6 days namely A,B,C,D,E,F.

When there are no minimum marks for internal assessment, there will be a separate, minimum of 40 percent for a pass in each theory and practical under graduate degree examinations and 50 percents for Post Graduate degree examinations.

For all practical examinations (external) there will be in general, two external examiners. The external practical examination for all the U.G. Science Subjects (major and ancillary) will be conducted at the end of respective semesters.

The Vice Chancellor of our University is Dr. K Pitchumani and the Registrar is Dr. S. Santhosh Baboo.

RULES & REGULATIONS

‹Make use of every opportunity that is made available in JP College of Arts and Science to strive towards academic excellence and personality development.

‹Respect for teachers, elders and persons in authority, courtesy, kindness, loyalty, dignity of labour, compassion for the less fortunate, a friendly attitude towards fellow students are expected from every student of JP College of Arts and Science.

‹Students shall maintain silence and be attentive in classes, at meetings of the college associations and other gatherings.

‹Every student shall consider it as her / his personal responsibility to maintain the cleanliness of the campus.

‹Cell Phones are not permitted for students and staff in the College.

LIABILITY FOR PROPERTY/FURNITURE

Every student shall take special care of the furniture and other amenities that are kept for use. Any scribbling on desks or damage to property such as breaking of things/ furniture shall be charged to the student at fault, if not traceable, to all the students collectively.

LATE COMERS

Students are expected to come to the classes before 10 am. Late comers are permitted into the class room with the permission from the Vice Principal. Visitors are not allowed to meet the students during college hours

16 JP COLLEGE JP COLLEGE VEHICLE PARKING All two wheelers must be parked in the allotted parking area. Vehicle owners must have the vehicle license and vehicle insurance documents. Students are requested to produce their driving license when demanded by the authority for verification.

DRESS CODE Students should wear clean, decent clothes as to safe guard the dignity of a cultured and educated person. The boys should be in formals and girls should wear salwar kameez with over coat and wearing legging is strictly not allowed.

NOTICE BOARD Students shall refer the notice board for test, exam time tables, fees payment and other general information.

FUND RAISING Private collection of funds or sale of items must not be made without the permission of the Principal.

ACADEMIC INFORMATIONS The academic year is divided into two semesters and each semester consists of 90 working days without counting the test days and exam days. In accordance with the directives of Manonmaniam Sundarnar University college offers 25% of Internal assessment marks with 75% of external marks, for both U.G and P.G courses. Every student should appear for 3 series of test in all subjects before appearing for the University examinations at the end of each semester.

JP COLLEGE 17 JP COLLEGE RULES OF ATTENDANCE AND DISCIPLINE ‹ Regularity in attendance is obligatory and students are expected to possess a minimum of 90% attendance. ‹ No student shall absent himself / herself without prior permission. Application for leave must be submitted to the Head of the Department. ‹ Candidate shall have 75% of minimum attendance per semester to take the university examinations. ‹ Students those who have 65% of attendance will have to pay condonation fee. ‹ Students who have attendance less than 65% have to repeat their course after getting permission from the College and Manonmaniam Sundarnar University. LEAVE ‹ Before taking leave students should apply for leave in the written form duly signed by parents. The letter should be submitted to the Head of the Department after getting the permission from the teacher in charge. ‹ In case of absence due to unforeseen cause, leave letter should be submitted on the first day of returning to the college. Please note: Submission of leave application with/without medical certificate does not entitle a student to earn attendance automatically for the day of his/her absence from the college.

SEMESTER FEES REGULATIONS

Semester fees should be paid (without fine) within the stipulated date, failing which a penalty will be levied. Every student shall pay the semester fees due even if he/she discontinues before completing the semester. If a student leaves the college during semester, he/she shall not have the right to claim a remission of any portion of the fees.

Clearance of fees dues is a prerequisite for: 1.Permission to write the semester exams. 2.Getting transfer certificate from the college.

CERTIFICATE A former or present student desiring to obtain a certificate (TC, conduct, bonafide etc) shall apply for it by making a formal written request to the Principal. Certificate will not be issued in less than 24 hours. DISCIPLINARY RULES

‹Indulging in any offence will result in suspension and dismissal from the college. ‹Ragging of any sort or indulging in any form of violence is punishable. ‹Disobedience to Management/Faculty, indecent behavior, involvement in any criminal offence is punishable under the law of the land. ‹Any kind of malpractice (Cheating, copying in tests/ examinations giving false declarations etc.) will lead to debarring from taking the examination. ‹Leaving the hostel without proper permission from warden will lead to severe consequences.

SCHOLARSHIPS ‹‹‹The college makes every effort to get different types of scholarships for the students. ‹SC/ST/ MINORITY/BC/MBC scholarships in accordance with the central and state government norms are being provided.

JP COLLEGE 1919 JP COLLEGE CAMPUS FACILTIES AND STUDENT’S AMENITIES

LIBRARY

Library is a realm of knowledge which develops the power of the mind. Therefore the college encourages maximum use of the library. The college library has numerous volumes in various subjects. Nearly 60 periodicals and journals are subscribed for the benefit of the teaching and learning communities.

Library is kept open from 8: 00 am to 5:00 pm on all working days. During semester holidays and all Saturdays it will open from 8 am to 1 pm. During examination days it will function till 5.30 pm. Library will be closed on all Sundays and government holidays. In order to facilitate the better use of the library by all, the following rules are framed and are to be observed by all carefully.

1) Books should be returned on the due date stamped on the sheet failing which a fine of Rs.1 per day, per book shall be collected.

2) Check the pages of books before leaving the counter. If there are pages missing, scribbling or other damages in the book, it should be reported to the librarian immediately.

3) Absolute silence should be maintained in the library. Combined study, discussion and consultations are strictly prohibited.

4) Strict silence must be observed within the library and reading room.

5) Application for books must be made in printed slips which are available at the Library on payment of a nominal rate.

6) Application Slip should be dropped in the box provided for before 10 am so that books may be issued between 10 am and 3.30 pm on the same day. 20 JP COLLEGE JP COLLEGE 7) Books will be issued only on producing the borrower’s identification card.

8) Each student is allowed to borrow only one book at a time.

9) No one is allowed to Sub-lend the library books he/ she has borrowed, or get books on behalf of others.

10)The Borrower will be held responsible for the damage the book he/she borrows. Therefore at the time issue, the students should check up him /her that the books issued to him/her in good condition.

11) The loss of any books should be reported to the librarian.

12)In case a book is lost, the cost of the book with fine should be paid to the office.

13)Books must be returned to the library on or before due date stamped on them, if not a fine of 50 paise per day from the due date will be collected.

14)Reference books and periodicals should be read in the library or Reading room only and must not be taken out. After use they must be returned to the library assistant in person.

15)The Librarian can recall a book even before the date of expiry.

HOSTEL FOR BOYS AND GIRLS

St.Augstine hostel for boys is functioning inside the campus. It can accommodate more than 100 students. The Principal is the Warden of the hostel. The hostel has its own rules and regulations.

St.Theresa hostel for girls is able to accommodate above 150 students. It caters the needs of the female students coming far away from this locality.

JP COLLEGE 21 JP COLLEGE STUDENT’S UNION

The aim of Students’Union is to strive for the best in academic and extracurricular activities. The members should see to it that the activities of the Students’Union conform to the rules and regulations prescribed by the Directorate Collegiate Education, Chennai.

All the students are the members of the Students’ Union.

The General Council (GC) of the Students’Union consists of the following members. The President (Principal), Vice Principal and Staff Advisors form the administrative representatives of the union. The president, vice president, secretary, joint secretary, treasurer and fine arts secretary are selected among the student’s representatives of different classes. The Principal is the Ex-Officio President of the Students Union. The staff advisors shall be nominated by the Principal.

Student Union shall strive only for the welfare of the students’. It shall be with the permission of the Principal to organize meetings and other activities to tap the hidden talents in the students.

On no ground the students union can pass a resolution that affects the fundamental rules and regulations of the college.

Any problem arising out of the students’ community should be settled only through peaceful methods. All negotiations should be done only through the staff advisors.

The resolutions passed by the students union are only proposals. And those proposals have validity only if they are approved by the Principal. The Principal is the final authority in approving any proposal mooted by the Student’s Union.

The Principal is the Patron and President of all the Associations. He/She will nominate the Vice Presidents from the departments concerned.

The Secretaries shall be the representatives of the third year classes. However, the Secretaries of Language Associations will be elected from and by the student of the First year and Second Year classes offering the respective language courses during the academic year. They will, with the prior permission of the Principal, arrange the association meetings.

BUS SERVICES The transport services are provided by the institution to the students in the morning and evening. Every bus accompanies one staff as a monitor for the safety travel and makes the students all have seated properly. Students should pay the bus fees within 10 days after joining the college. If any student wants to discontinue travel by college bus he/she should give written request to the Principal immediately. ACADEMIC COMMITTEE
