In order to develop human capital and labor power, it has implemented a range of ideologically-driven policies that have been geared towards improving the overall mental, moral and physical “quality” (suzhi) of the population. The current criteria for assessing the individual value of citizens have resulted in new lines of stratification being drawn among children. As a result, healthy rural daughters and special needs children in particular are now considered unworthy of intensive investment and face a higher likelihood of being abandoned to state care. -

Mair. Women as Insurance Assets in Traditional Societies: * A study of brideprices during 18th-19th century China Zhiwu Chen, Yale University Shijun He, Tsinghua University Zhan Lin, Renmin University Kaixiang Peng, Henan University 2014.11.25. Abstract Before modern financial markets emerged, agrarian societies relied on non-financial means to mitigate risks. Women became an apparatus of insurance—they were traded for other resources when the survival of a family was under threat. This happened on different continents in places with little or no connections with each other. To examine how women were used in traditional societies as an insurance tool, this paper collected data on marriage- and adultery-related homicide cases from the Qing dynasty’s Criminal Case Repots Archives. Of the 73,216 criminal reports from between 1736 and 1896 we identified 3,119 cases that contain price information on wife or concubine sale, widow remarriage, regular marriage, and bride-price. This dataset is then used to investigate if bride-prices would decrease significantly during times when human survival was under pressure or threat. In our analysis, grain price is employed as a proxy for the presence of survival risks: higher grain price signals a shortage of food supply and its severity. For example, a major crop failure due to drought or other natural disasters usually leads to extremely high grain price and challenges the survival of human beings, which pressures more husbands to sell their wives or daughters for liquidity. In turn, this may result in high supply of women on the market, causing supply-demand imbalance. The price of woman traded as wife or concubine, or “bride-price” (a term as used hereafter), will likely fall as a result. -

Ba Jin, 1904-2005 A short biography of anarchist, author and "grand old man of Chinese literature", according to The Guardian, Ba Jin. Ba Jin Aka Li Feigan, Pa Jin, born 25 November 1904 - Chengdu, Sichuan, died 17 October 2005 - China Ba Jin was born Li Feigan on November 25th 1904 in Chengdu, in Sichuan to an high-up official’s family. His youth was marked by the convulsions that shook China, with the fall of the Emperor and the proclamation of the Republic.in 1912. In 1919, there was a wave of strikes and social unrest and young Li Feigan joined the Chengdu anarchist group, the Equality Society. He took the name Ba Jin from the first syllable of the anarchist Bakunin and the last from Kropotkin in tribute to them. He was deeply impressed by the work of Kropotkin and of Emma Goldman, and he entered into correspondence with her. He was the most active member of the group, involved in distribution of propaganda and the setting up of a reading room in the building of the local anarchist paper. He left to study at Nanking then at Shanghai, and learnt Russian, French, English and Esperanto. He remained active in the anarchist movement there, writing a pamphlet on the Chicago Anarchist Martyrs. Shanghai was one of the centres of revolution in China, which climaxed in the workers insurrection there in 1927. The Chinese anarchist movement, caught between the Communists and the Nationalists, started to decline. Li Feigan left to study in Paris. There he was active in the anarchist movement and was involved in the campaign to save the Italian-American anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti from their death sentence. -

The Concubine in Republican China: Social Perception and Legal Construction Lisa Tran Abstract Beginning in the late nineteenth century, the question of whether concubi- nage violated the principle of monogamy arose in legal and public debates. Late imperial views of the concubine as a minor wife continued to influ- ence popular views of the concubine in the Republic, leading many to con- demn concubinage as bigamy. Hoping to circumvent the monogamy issue, Republican jurists who wished to continue the legal tolerance of concubi- nage created the new category of household member. The dual identities of the concubine—as minor wife and household member—reflect social and legal responses to the challenge posed by the new meaning of monogamy and reflect the tensions both within and between law and society. For decades, these popular percep- tions of the concubine featured in literature, film and the arts have influ- enced academic scholarship. Only recently have scholars begun to look beyond the familiar stereotypes and tropes associated with concubinage and focus specifically on the concubine as a central subject of study.1 Such close investigation, particularly from the perspective of law, reveals the concubine to be both a multi-dimensional person and concept with a long and complicated history. Since its emergence as a custom among elite families in the Song dynasty, concubinage has undergone significant changes, which in turn af- fected the concubine’s identity. -

They served with both the Methodist Church of Canada and after church union in 1925, The United Church of Canada. Charlie was a surgeon and an ordained minister graduating from Victoria College in 1895 and Trinity Medical College of the University of Toronto in 1899. Editor: John Service (PhD., Psychology) © Elizabeth Service, Ottawa, Canada, April 2021 INTRODUCTION This paper expands the research of the Service family narrative beyond its singular linear form to reflect the collective history of the West China Mission. Although the life stories of Charles Winfield Service, a surgeon, and Robina (Morgan) Service, a nurse, are the connecting thread weaving together the narrative, the paper actively links their stories to the collective actions of the numerous individuals and institutions associated with the mission from 1891 to 1952. The narrative is told through the lens of an international development story and focuses on the medical work of the missionary enterprise. One of Canada’s most eminent historians, William Morton, noted that “history is not an academic mystery, it’s what the community thinks about itself, how it sorts out ideas.”1 This paper is an attempt to sort out the ideas of a familial narrative within a larger collective history. -

play Cry to Heaven: A Play to Celebrate One Hundred Years of Chinese Spoken Drama by Nick Rongjun Yu Introduction and translation by Shiao-ling Yu Yutian (Cry to Heaven) is the third Chinese stage adaptation of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin between 1907 and 2007. The fi rst, Heinu yutian lu (Black Slave’s Cry to Heaven) by Zeng Xiaogu, was staged by Chinese students in Tokyo in 1907; the second, Heinu hen (Regret of the Black Slaves) by Ouyang Yuqian, was mounted as part of the fi ftieth anniversary of the fi rst production; and the third, Yutian (Cry to Heaven), commemorated the hundredth anniversary of Chinese spoken drama (huaju) in 2007. Each adaptation has a different focus that refl ects the social, political, and cultural conditions of its time, and together the works provide a historical view of the development of Chinese spoken drama. The most recent production, by Nick Rongjun Yu, juxtaposes one hundred years of dramatic history with scenes from Uncle Tom’s Cabin, making the American slaves’ struggle to gain freedom a metaphor for Chinese dramatists’ efforts to achieve their own. Yu Rongjun, also known as Nick Rongjun Yu, is the author of more than twenty plays, including Renmo gouyang (Dog’s Face), WWW.COM, and Tiantang gebi shi fengrenyuan (The Asylum Next to Heaven). His plays have won many prizes in China and have been performed in Hong Kong, Taipei, the United States, and other countries. Besides being a playwright, he is director of programming and marketing for the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center.
