Violent Conflicts, Ceasefires and Peace Accords Through the Lens Of
The Invasion of Nyae Nyae: A case study in on-going aggression against indigenous hunter-gatherers in Namibia Jennifer Hays, Research Fellow in Comparative Indigenous Studies, University of Tromsø Initially we had invited Kxao Moses, a Ju|’hoansi man from Nyae Nyae, Namibia, to give a presentation about the recent invasion of the Nyae Nyae Conservancy by neighboring pastoralists. He was unable to come at the last minute, however, so I will discuss the issue instead. I have spent a great deal of time in southern Africa, including a year of fieldwork in the Nyae Nyae Conservancy—the area discussed here. I was also in the country in May, and visited Nyae Nyae as these events were happening. Although this presentation is informed by my own experience in southern Africa, I have quoted extensively from the involved organizations and affected individuals and representatives and it is their words that best describe the situation. R. Rahman became the first Indian composer to win Best Score and Best Song (“Jai Ho”) for his music in the film, Slumdog Millionaire (2008). This event not only granted Rahman another prestigious accolade for his accomplishments as a popular film music composer (i.e., he has been awarded many times over in India for his music), but it gave Rahman new star-status recognition among a Western audience. Although enormously famous in India and well-known among the South Asian diaspora located throughout many parts of the world, Rahman remained, up until that time, virtually unknown among mainstream U.S. audiences. U.S. audiences today are perhaps more likely than a decade ago to recognize the sounds and images of Indian cinema known as Bollywood, a cultural artifact, once considered “kitsch,” that increasingly traverses international popular cultures. Consequently, the appeal of Rahman’s Bollywood music among a wider global audience (as presented in Slumdog Millionaire) coincides with the global circulation and consumption of Bollywood films and music in recent years. I suggest that the appeal for Rahman’s music outside of India cannot be explained by the Western fascination with the exotic “Other," but instead involves a cultural affinity for a type of style and sound set forth in Rahman’s music. -

Michael Korda
Michael Korda From Wikipedia Born in London, Michael Korda is the son of English actress Gertrude Musgrove, and the Hungarian Jewish artist and film production designer Vincent Korda. He is the nephew of film magnate Sir Alexander Korda and brother, Zoltan Korda, both film directors. Korda grew up in England but received part of his education in France where his father had worked with film director Marcel Pagnol. As a child, Korda also lived in the United States from 1941 to 1946. He was schooled at the private Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland and read History at Magdalen College, Oxford. He served in the Royal Air Force doing intelligence work in Germany. The novelist Graham Greene was a lifelong friend. Korda met him on his Uncle Alex Korda's yacht. Career Korda moved to New York City in 1957 where he worked for playwright Sidney Kingsley as a research assistant and then later as a freelance reader in the CBS story department. In 1958 he joined the book publishing firm, Simon & Schuster, beginning as an assistant editor, which included the task of reading slush pile manuscripts for Henry Simon. Many editors stick to one area of interest, but early on Korda demonstrated an ability and interest in editing both fiction and non-fiction. He states in his memoir that he edited books on everything from mathematics and philosophy, memoirs, fiction, translations from French, politics, anthropology and science history among others. One of the first books Korda bought was The Forest People by Colin Turnbull—a memoir of Turnbull's time living with the Mbuti Pygmies in the then Belgian Congo. -

SHORT BIO: Steven Feld Steven Feld is an anthropologist, filmmaker, sound artist/performer, and Distinguished Professor of Anthropology Emeritus at the University of New Mexico. After studies in music, film, and photography, he received the Ph.D in Anthropological Linguistics at Indiana University in 1979. From 1976 he began a research project in the Bosavi rainforest of Papua New Guinea. Results include the monograph Sound and Sentiment (republished 2012 in a 3rd and 30th anniversary edition), a Bosavi-English-Tok Pisin Dicitionary, and essays, some published in his co-edited books Music Grooves and Senses of Place. From this work he also produced audio projects including Voices of the Rainforest. Key theoretical themes developed in this work are the anthropology of sound and voice; acoustemology, particularly regarding eco-cosmology as relational ontology; emotive sensuality; and experimental, dialogic writing, recording, and filmmaking. Work after 2000 has concentrated on related themes in the study of bells in Europe, Japan, Ghana, and Togo, published in CDs, DVDs, and books like The Time of Bells, Skyros Carnival, and Santi, Animali, e Suoni. His most recent project concerns jazz in West Africa, published in the twelve CD, five DVD, and book set Jazz Cosmopolitanism in Accra. Feld’s work has been supported and honored by MacArthur and Guggenheim fellowships as well as book and film prizes. LONG BIO: Steven Feld Steven Feld's academic research principally concerns the anthropology of sound, voice, senses, and media, incorporating linguistics and poetics, music and aesthetics, acoustics and ecology, film and photography. From 1975-2000 he studied the sound world of the Bosavi rainforest region in Papua New Guinea, from environmental sounds and bird calls to language, poetry and music. -

Speaker Biographies Males and Violence: Engaging Men and Boys as Survivors, Advocates, and Change Agents Conference September 10-11, 2018 Kathy Barbini Kathy Barbini, founder of Big Voice Pictures, and producer/director, is an award-winning independent documentary and television producer. Prior to founding Big Voice Pictures, she worked as a producer for The Discovery Channel’s multi-award winning educational documentary series Assignment Discovery. She was nominated for an ACE-Award for MTV Networks for a year-end special featuring socially conscious entertainers and music artists making an impact in the world. Ms. Barbini also produced media for political media consultants, and was an associate producer on a prime-time Presidential election-eve special broadcast on ABC, NBC and CBS. Additionally, as Project Director for HBO’s national screening tour of the Emmy Award-winning documentary Dear America: Letters Home From Vietnam, she organized national fundraising screenings to benefit the Vietnam Veterans of America. Ms. Barbini started her early career working on leading magazine programs for ABC and NBC News. Her independent documentaries are distributed internationally and were funded by leading foundations including The Eastman Kodak Foundation, The Global Ministries Foundation, and the Pioneer Fund.
