The End of the Sky

esirable attributes for location, climate, geology - and increasingly astute marketing - have all combined to make the island of Hainan, China’s southernmost province, an ideal resort destination.

Look at the figures alone. According to the Hainan Provincial Tourism Development Commission, the province welcomed more than 47.89 million tourists in 2014, up D10.6 % year-on-year. This has brought in a corresponding increase in incoming tourism revenue. According to the Commission, tourism generated 50.65 billion yuan (US$8.14 billion) for the province, an increase of 13.2 % from the previous year.

Indeed, the island has ideal advantages as a tourism resort. It lies across the Qiongzhou Strait from Guangdong province to the north and across the Gulf of Tonkin from Vietnam to the west. It also neighbors the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in the east and Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines in the south. All those countries and regions are one to four hour's flight time from Hainan. The province sits at 18 degrees north latitude - a golden line that connects many of the famous coastal vacation resorts of the world, including Miami, Hawaii, Bali, Phuket and the Maldives. , Hainan boasts a coastline that stretches 1,528 km with many beaches, as well as hot springs, mountains, forests and extinct volcanoes.

Yet because of its location far from the Chinese mainland, it used to be regarded as "the edge of the Earth" in ancient times. Tail of the Dragon Human activities by the indigenous Li tribe on Hainan can be traced back between 6,000 and 10,000 years. Written history, however only begins after 200 BC when Hainan Island fell under Chinese Control during the Qin Dynasty. As the earliest residents in Hainan, people from the Li ethnic group preserve their culture through oral traditions and art because they have no written language of their own. The ethnic group's weaving technology dates back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476) and is believed to be one of the earliest weaving techniques in China.

Subsequent dynasties like the Tang, Song and Yuan (6th-14th centuries) set up special administrative offices on Hainan and began incorporating it into the country’s central government. Han Chinese moved in and the indigenous Li tribe retreated further inland to the mountains.

Hainan was nicknamed the “Tail of the Dragon”, the last unexplored frontier of China and civilization. Because of its remote and forbidding location, many disgraced individuals were exiled to its sandy shores, including the famous Poet Su Dongpo, who was banished there during the Song Dynasty.

In more recent times, Hainan was used as a strategic military outpost in 1890 to combat the French in the Qing Dynast. Similarly, the later helped the Communists to battle the Japanese in the 1930-1945. In 1950, China officially established the Hainan Special Administrative Area. Finally in 1988, Hainan officially became a province, the youngest and smallest province of China in land and the biggest in ocean area, with Haikou established as the capital. & theThe Ocean Haikou & Sanya Edition 14 PAPER MAGAZINE cover story

Golden Shores While the late 1980s started to change the face of Haikou from a sleepy fishing village to a bustling town as the province’s administrative, commercial and financial capital, the early 1990s marked the beginning of the entire island’s transformation, most noticeably in Sanya and particularly in . In October 1992, the State Council officially designated Yalong Bay as China’s first tropical National AAAA Tourist Resort.

For centuries prior, the 7.5 kilometre stretch of pristine white sand beach southeast of Sanya had slumbered quietly under blue skies. Not long after the State Council declaration, in 1995, the Gloria Hotel opened in Yalong Bay as Sanya’s first luxury resort. The world’s who-who of international luxury hotel brands followed, with the Sheraton Sanya Resort leading the way and opening in April 2003, undeterred even by the SARS outbreak. Subsequently, one after another, up cropped the Holiday Inn, Hilton, Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton, the St. Regis, MGM Grand, all along Yalong Bay’s golden shores. Mass tourism had arrived in Sanya.

Tourism Juggernaut Flushed with Yalong Bay’s success, the development and branding of Sanya as "international tourism island" proceeded with full speed, with an new emerging area - (Begonia Bay) - under development. By 2010, Haitang Bay had already attracted more than RMB 24 billion in real estate investment; a few years later, a handful of the world’s leading luxury hoteliers were already early market entrants: Shangri-La, Conrad, InterContinental, The Royal Begonia, A Luxury Collection Sanya.

With more than 21 kilometers of beautiful sandy beach, every inch of land is currently being developed in the making of a first-class tourism resort. Today, Haitang Bay has to be seen to be believed; flanked by the world’s biggest duty-free shopping mall and IMAX cinemas, yacht club marina, golf courses, wetland parks, even a hospital, Haitang Bay marks the biggest and the most important project of Sanya tourism development with more than 20 world-class resorts, one with an aquaventure theme park, under construction. Imagine what this place will look like in 5 or 10 years…

The last time this writer witnessed construction and development of this scale was in Beijing in preparation for the 2008 Olympics.

At a cost of RMB 7 billion, the local government also constructed seven small folk towns on the bay in a bid to appease local culture and customs (and perhaps avoid the controversy that local residents’ displacement brought to Beijing). Local residents did not have to move out of the bay as tourism and job opportunities became available for local people under the development plan.

In the island’s other areas, luxury hoteliers have managed to carve out niches for themselves, such as Mandarin Oriental in Dadong Bay and Park Hyatt in Sunny Bay. Meantime, the capital, Haikou, is also benefiting from the boom, with recent openings by Shangri-La and Marriott.

Amidst such explosive development, one wonders at the sustainability of it all. The international tourism market has continued a downward trend since 2011; in 2013, the international tourism market fell 17.56%, the first half of 2014 expanded to 30.33 percent decline, with the Russian market, a key Sanya international feeder, falling a sharp 39.31%!

Looking at all those resorts - with all those rooms - needing employees as well as paying guests within the next five years, one fervently hopes that all the international luxury hoteliers have training plans in place to address increasing pressure on service and other software issues, and that the domestic tourist market will be robust enough to sustain any downturn in either overseas markets or the overall Chinese economy. Full speed ahead!

But since the Chinese actually buy a mix of modern technologies as well as cheap local food and services, they are clearly becoming rapidly wealthier.

However, Deaton is not really interested in measuring the aggregate size of economies. His primary interest is measuring poverty and deprivation in the developing world. And PPPs have important implications for this area. India has a third of the world’s extreme poor. Fifteen years ago, Deaton criticised the predominant methodology used by statisticians in Delhi to make estimates of local prices. His recommendations for reform were acted upon, and as a consequence Indian poverty levels were discovered to be significantly higher than thought. The revisions sparked a major political debate in that country about the relationship between poverty and economic growth, thus proving that economists can, sometimes, be of practical use.

Deaton suggests reform should go further. Five years ago, he argued that we should be skeptical of the idea that it’s possible to make comparisons between rich countries and poor countries, even using PPP adjustments. The spending patterns of the populations are simply too different for the exercise to be worthwhile, he argued.“Unless we understand how the numbers are put together, and what they mean, we run the risk of seeing problems where there are none, or missing urgent 18 PAPER MAGAZINE jetsetter Mesmerising Maldives Located about 435 miles southwest of Sri Lanka, the Maldives, a chain of about 1,200 small coral islands, is Asia's smallest country, one of its most exclusive (and expensive), and, sadly, its most endangered. As the lowest country on the planet, the Maldives could vanish in the not-too-distant future if sea levels continue to rise. The threat is so real, in fact, that the government is considering purchasing land in neighboring countries for the worst-case scenario of relocating its roughly 300,000 residents. Visit while you can.

Beaches of Beauty The Maldives is home to perhaps the best beaches in the world; they’re on almost every one of the country’s nearly 1,200 islands and are so consistently perfect that it’s hard not to become blasé about them. While some beaches may boast softer granules than others, the basic fact remains: you’ll find consistently whiter-than-white powder sand and luminous cyan-blue water like this almost nowhere else on earth. This fact alone is enough to bring over a million people a year to this tiny, remote and otherwise little-known Indian Ocean paradise. Resorts for Everyone Every resort in the Maldives is its own private island, and with over 100 to choose from the only problem is selecting where you want to stay. At the top end, the world’s most exclusive hotel brands compete with each other to attain ever-greater heights of luxury, from personal butlers and private lap pools to in-room massages and pillow menus. It’s not surprising that honeymooners and those seeking a glamorous tropical getaway have long had the country at the top of their wish lists. But there’s choice beyond the five- and six-star resorts. Other islands cater for families, for divers, for those on a (relative) budget, and anyone wanting a tranquil back-to-nature experience.

In deeper waters lurk manta rays, turtles, sharks and even the world’s largest fish, the whale shark. The best bit? The water is so warm many people don’t even wear a wetsuit. Don’t Miss Cruise the translucent waters of the islands in a traditional Maldivian dhoni boat and let local Maldivian crew accompany you as you cruise the coral reefs. The Girl with the Dragon Swing: Shanshan Feng

hanshan Feng is the first player from China to become a member of the LPGA Tour. She is the first player from China to win an LPGA major championship, as well as the first player from mainland China (male or Sfemale) to win a major championship. Ms. Feng has four victories on the tour, including the 2012 LPGA Championship, a major title, in which she shot a bogey-free 67 in the final round to win by two strokes. Her best finish in 16 previous majors was a tie for 22nd at the 2012 Kraft Nabisco Championship. With the victory, she moved from tenth to fifth in the Women's World Golf Rankings.

Born in Guangzhou, Ms. Feng started playing golf at age 10. Unlike a majority of Chinese who come to play the game through their wealth, Ms. Feng got into the sport because her father, Mr. Xiong, worked for a local sports bureau and was assigned to captain the junior golf team in her hometown. Within a year, Ms. Feng had surpassed her father - who had learned to play at the same time - and as a 12-year-old, aimed to become the first full-time member of the LPGA tour from China.

As a girl, she shuttled to driving ranges after school each day with only enough time to squeeze in a few hours of practice before dark. She could only play a full 18 holes on the weekends, when she could make the lengthy trip outside the city to play on a course. By the time she was 17, she had been on the national team for three years and had reached a bottleneck. Her coach, Gary Gilchrist, then offered Ms. Feng a full scholarship to attend his golf academy in Florida, and a year later she made it through Q school on her first try. While still an amateur, Feng tied for ninth at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament in December 2007 to earn a spot on the LPGA Tour in 2008.

Now in her eighth year on tour, Ms. Feng, is the only golfer from China, man or woman, to win a major and is its best chance at a medal in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. 26 PAPER MAGAZINE muse Hand Made Beauty REINHARD PLANK (Italy) 100% Tired of the media dictating trends for ¥ 2,480 Christmas in December? The Yohan Kim brand was first established in London in 2009. The Korean-born designer graduated from London College of Fashion in 2007. Not long after his graduation, he moved to Paris and worked for Balmain, specializing in leather wear, then later opened his own Yohan design studio in Beijing. There is always a dark sense of humor attached to Yohan’s work, playful yet stylish. He is also aiming at exploring “luxuriousness” through his own way. He applies an unexpected combination of textiles— textured leather, cashmere wool, gold embroidery, beading, printing - all mixed and merged in harmoney. His signature combines heavy details with a strong structure emphasizing a special sense of sensuality and power.

Yohan has always been experimental with his work, inventing his own new way of studding and beadinge and creating an extraordinary, unique visual excitement. 30 PAPER MAGAZINE yummy Bailian Goose Bumps uch has been written about one of the most famous traditional Hainanese dishes - Hot-spring Goose, also called Wenquan Goose, a hybrid kept by farmers living adjacent to the . When the geese are small, farmers unleash them into the wild to hunt down their own food that is chiefly comprised of grass seeds. When the stage for putting onM weight comes, farmers cram the geese with a special diet. Almost nothing though has been written about the curious little Hainan village, located just outside the fringes of Haikou, of Bailian, which also seems to be quite famous, among locals at least, for its goose.

While driving through its dusty streets, one passes row after row of roadside eateries and restaurants, all bearing a statue of a white goose, indicating the star attraction in this sleepy rural town.We arrived at one such restaurant, clusters of somewhat rundown private dining room cottages perched on the goose farm banks of a small lake and a hot spring where, indeed, hordes of plump white geese frolic. If you’re not too fussy about cleanliness, there’s a certain rustic, serene charm to this place.

Service was prompt, by staff in conical hats who set up the hot pot and lay out ingredients for the all-important sauce first: chilli, sugar, little lemons and truckloads of mashed garlic. One by one, the dishes came: river vegetables, tasty tofu, river fish, the famous Wenquan chicken (not really to my liking, to be perfectly honest) and finally, thepiece de resistance: the goose.

Hot-spring Goose is nutritious, fatty but not greasy, delicate, aromatic and delicious, which accounts for its popularity. Goose blood has a high concentration of protein and contains more than 10 rare elements such as iron, copper and calcium. In this particular case, I passed on the goose after a few bites - it was simply too tough and the texture was rubbery, qualities which the tasty sauce could not hide. My companions though were rhapsodizing over this goose like it was manna from heaven so perhaps it was just me being a silly little goose.

hen the sun is setting on particularly beautiful afternoons, sitting outside on Shuiwusha’s expansive garden patio overlooking the palmW tree-fringed shoreline of Haikou Bay, one could be forgiven for thinking that, perhaps, one isn’t on Hainan, or even China, at all. This could be a scene out of an idyllic coastal town in California or Australia.

Inside, the restaurant is inescapably Chinese, three storeys dotted with private dining rooms swathed in silk and satin furnishings, all with floor to ceiling windows to capitalize on those picturesque sea views. Even on ordinary evenings, the restaurant was packed, popular for business entertaining and private celebrations. Although the restaurant bills itself as “Multi-Cuisine”, the menu is predominantly Chinese although the presentation has been tweaked for a contemporary touch.

The vegetarian dishes are excellent (the wok-fried broccoli tower, subtly laced with garlic and chilli), and this being in Hainan after all, as are the seafood dishes. The stand-out was the wok-fried beef, which had been gorgeously marinated and was extremely tender and tasty.

Grüner Veltliner - A Fresh Taste Contributed by Roy Moorfield

It is difficult not to be tempted to taste a wine made from a grape variety which has the colloquial name of “GrüVe” (groovy); particularly when it exudes a taste sensation that evokes that sort of feeling. Also just called “Gruner” in America, Austrian Grüner Veltliner (groo-ner Felt-lee-ner) is rising fast on the world’s white wine radar.

Though little known outside Austria, most of the world’s top sommeliers are turning to it as a refreshing dry white wine. Australia and New Zealand are starting to produce some quality wines from this variety.

The wine-loving Romans brought this and many other varieties to Austria. It thrived, but was overshadowed by Riesling. It was not until the 1950s that a new approach to trellising the vines uncovered a hidden flavour in the fruit. Roy Moorfield has been a global wine industry authority This character has been refined. There are 43 luxury private villas on the island, each with their own pool and 18 of them suspended over water. There are five four-bedroom residences, each with private infinity pool, gym and spa room, while the Romantic Pool Residence has its own outdoor dining gazebo, is completely exclusive and only accessible by boat.

Finished in muted aquas, browns and ambers, villas are pleasantly finished with teak furniture, bamboo light fixtures and rattan swinging chairs. Each has a private pool; many have extensive terraces, daybeds and shaded garden spaces, and the outdoor baths and showers, stocked with an array of full-sized Clarins products

Despite the resort’s isolation, dining is stellar. No wonder as the kitchen is overseen by executive chef Adeline Grattard, a veteran of two Michelin-starred restaurants- Hong Kong’s Bo Innovation and L’Astrance in Paris- who earned a star of her own at 32 for Yam’Tcha in Paris. The resort has three restaurants and two bars, and boasts the largest wine and champagne collection in the Maldives. Overlooking the entire island, a Teppanyaki restaurant stands atop a dazzling three-storey-tall wine “cellar”. Serving a creative gourmet menu, overwater restaurant Aragu is stunning, with cuisine on par with the best in Europe.

For those who like to be pampered, the resort spa, My Blend By Clarins offers bespoke treatments and a "snow room" which claims to help circulation. Guests can enjoy private sessions with a yoga master, held on a "meditation platform" on the beachfront.

The island has a Troon Short Game Golf Academy, designed by former Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal. Private submarine excursions for two are on offer as well as sunset cruises on a luxury yacht, snorkeling, scuba-diving and dolphin watching. Velaa Private Island, Noonu Atoll, Maldives.
