Cultivating Identity and the Music of Ultimate Fighting
CULIVATING IDENTITY AND THE MUSIC OF ULTIMATE FIGHTING Luke R Davis A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2012 Committee: Megan Rancier, Advisor Kara Attrep © 2012 Luke R Davis All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Megan Rancier, Advisor In this project, I studied the music used in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events and connect it to greater themes and aspects of social study. By examining the events of the UFC and how music is used, I focussed primarily on three issues that create a multi-layered understanding of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters and the cultivation of identity. First, I examined ideas of identity formation and cultivation. Since each fighter in UFC events enters his fight to a specific, and self-chosen, musical piece, different aspects of identity including race, political views, gender ideologies, and class are outwardly projected to fans and other fighters with the choice of entrance music. This type of musical representation of identity has been discussed (although not always in relation to sports) in works by past scholars (Kun, 2005; Hamera, 2005; Garrett, 2008; Burton, 2010; Mcleod, 2011). Second, after establishing a deeper sense of socio-cultural fighter identity through entrance music, this project examined ideas of nationalism within the UFC. Although traces of nationalism fall within the purview of entrance music and identity, the UFC aids in the nationalistic representations of their fighters by utilizing different tactics of marketing and fighter branding. Lastly, this project built upon the above- mentioned issues of identity and nationality to appropriately discuss aspects of how the UFC attempts to depict fighter character to create a “good vs. -

Amen Pilot Episode Download Torrent
amen pilot episode download torrent The Wire in HD (updated with video clips) This tale begins and ends with a fellow named Bob Colesberry, who taught me as much as he could about filmmaking in the three or four years I was privileged to work with him. To those who knew Bob, it will provoke warm memories to say that he was not a language guy; he understood image, and story, and the delicate way in which those elements should meet. Bob spent a too-short lifetime on film sets, working beside real filmmakers – Scorsese, Bertolucci, Pakula, Levinson, Ang Lee – helping to shepherd the ideas of many great directors and eschewing the limelight altogether for the chance. But, hey, if you don’t believe me about how substantial his resume was, go to imdb right now and trace the arc of his career. That he ended up tethered to some ex-police reporter in Baltimore was pure forbearance on his part; for my part, I can just say I got very lucky. It is no exaggeration that Bob had to explain “crossing the line” to me a dozen times, often twice in the same day, before my brain could grasp a concept that first-year film students everywhere take for granted. If you go to the fourth episode of the first season of The Wire, and watch the camerawork on that long scene with Freamon and McNulty in the bar, you’ll be a bystander to the moment when the linear word-brain that I drag to set every day was finally allowed a few rays of cinematic light, courtesy of a patient mentor. -
Lacon 1 Film Program
BY WAY OF INTRODUCTION This film program represents for the most part an extremely personal selection by me, Bill Warren, with the help of Donald F. Glut. Usually convention film programs tend to show the established classics -- THINGS TO COME, METROPOLIS, WAR OF THE WORLDS, THEM - and, of course, those are good films. But they are seen so very often -- on tv, at non-sf film programs, at regional cons, and so forth -- that we decided to try to organize a program of good and/or entertaining movies that are rarely seen. We feel we have made a good selection, with films chosen for a variety of reasons. Some of the films on the program were, until quite recently, thought to be missing or impossible to view, like JUST IMAGINE, TRANSATLANTIC TUNNEL, or DR JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE. Others, since they are such glorious stinkers, have been relegated to 3 a.m. once-a-year tv showings, like VOODOO MAN or PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE. Other fairly recent movies (and good ones, at that) were, we felt, seen by far too few people, either due to poor distribution by the releasing companies, or because they didn't make enough money to ensure a wide release, like TARGETS or THE DEVIL'S BRIDE. Still others are relatively obscure foreign films, a couple of which we took a sight-unseen gamble on, basing our selections on favorable reviews; this includes films like THE GLADIATORS and END OF AUGUST AT THE HOTEL OZONE. And finally, there are a number of films here which are personal favorites of Don's or mine which we want other people to like; this includes INTERNATIONAL HOUSE, MAD LOVE, NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, RADIO RANCH, and SPY SMASHER RETURNS. -
Theatre, Rugby and Samoan Masculine Identities
1 Victoria University of Wellington School of English, Film, Theatre and Media Studies Blackout: Theatre, Rugby and Samoan Masculine identities Sepelini Mua’au A thesis submitted to the University of Wellington in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of a Masters in Arts (Theatre) 2016 2 Blackout: Theatre, Rugby and Samoan Masculine identities Abstract This thesis examines key ideas concerning masculinity and Samoan identity, focusing on the external and internal pressures placed on Pacific Island athletes in New Zealand and abroad to inform the development of an original script, Blackout. In 2014, as part of an Honours script-writing course, I wrote a first draft for my first full- length play. Inspired by the work of Samoan playwright Oscar Kightley, Blackout is a play that intersects the story of four young Pacific Island boys in their last year of College with the journey of a talented young Pacific Islander in his mid-20s trying to make his way in the Professional Rugby world. This thesis is part of a practice- based research project, comprising a 60% theory-based thesis (25,000 words) and 40% practical component, developing the script through three workshop productions. The two working questions the thesis and production process centre on are, firstly how the experiences of young second generation Samoan males can be explored through a contemporary theatre text, enabling the research to develop the story and characters of the play. The second, how the development of this script can enhance an understanding of what it is to be an emerging playwright, grounding the piece in personal experiences and contributing discoveries for young Pacific Playwrights. -

The SUNWOLVES return to the Southeast Asian city state coming off their first historic win here in June last year against the Bulls. They will be aiming to kick off their campaign with a winning start to their 2019 Super Rugby season with Saturday’s opener. The SUNWOLVES arrived in Singapore on Wednesday fresh from pre-season training in Australia and are looking forward to the staunch support from their fans in Singapore. Last year’s win at the National Stadium saw them achieve their best Super Rugby record. The SUNWOLVES are determined to boost their record this season, by clinching their first victory ever over the Durban side. Head Coach Scott Hansen, who is taking charge of the side while Tony Brown is away on national duty with Japan, shared his thoughts on the team selection: “We’ve picked the best team for this occasion and how it’s been picked is through pre-season and the efforts that have been there. We also have players coming back from injury so we’re excited by the team we’ve picked for this occasion. -
