Quilts as Visual Texts By Marcia Inzer Bost A capstone project submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Professional Writing in the Department of English In the College of Humanities and Social Sciences of Kennesaw State University Kennesaw, Georgia 2010 Dedication The capstone project is dedicated to those who gave me the quilts and the knowledge of quilts that I have used for this project: My mother, Julia Layman Inzer, whose quilts I am finishing; Her mother, Alma Lewis Layman, who quilted my early quilts and whose eccentric color choices inspired me to study quilt design; Her mother, Molly Belle Lewis, who left a masterpiece quilt to whose standards I aspire; My father’s sister, Barbara Inzer Smith, who always has the quilting advice I need; Her mother and my grandmother, Grace Carruth Inzer, whose corduroy quilt provides warmth on a cold day; and Her mother, Bertha Carroll Carruth, whose example of a strong, independent woman still inspires me and whose quilts still grace family beds. -

Evening Star Quilters Guild of Belvidere, NJ
Evening Star Quilters’ Guild - The Stitch Line MAY 2021 A Note From the ESQG Vice-President Spring is a time for cleaning. We hear terms like “spring cleaning” and “airing of the quilts.” We clean out our winter clothes and replace the space with our summer clothes. We open windows, rake up the dead leaves, clean up the yard… but what do we do in our quilt studio? I read an article in AARP magazine recently that indicated that clutter has been linked to stress and anxiety. Oh no! Clutter can even be linked to overeating and procrastination. Oh my! Apparently, clutter does more than take up space. Uh oh! According to minimalists (that is actually a term now) purchasing many items costs money, which can lead to financial stress and the need to work harder to acquire more… but what about our quilt supplies? Items require space and storage, but organizing it now is “well-planned hoarding”… but what about our fabric? The husband of a friend of mine refers to Missouri Star Quilt Company as “Misery,” due to the number of shipments she receives from their online store. Clearly he read the same article and understands little about quilting and our God-given right to buy fabric, patterns, and supplies. Little makes me happier than walking into my quilting room and playing in my bins of fabric searching for yet another project to create from my stash. No sir! We are not hoarders of cloth. We are not obsessive about our machines and scissors. Clutter is also the sign of a creative mind! Did you know that? Yes! Einstein once said, “A cluttered desk is a reflection of what is in your head. -
