Ashburton : A history with records of town and country

Notes:

Handwriten notes found interspersed with the typescript have not been removed. This decision is based on the assumption that they appear to directly relate. Unnumbered typescript pages were not removed or individually listed if interspersed with numbered pages. Any breaks in pagination due to a page not being originally included is not listed. i.e. if there is a note on e.g. p.24 to go straight to p.26, p.25 is not recorded as missing. Redrafts of pages have been placed at the end of an item or in numerical order within an item depending on what would be the least confusing.

There may well be gaps in the typescript of the five sections but because of the nature of the material due to redrafts of pages and parts of sections the information is often in a different order from that published.

Item nos.with * beside them indicate that they were in an envelope labelled “My draft of Parts 2, 3, 4”.

The words “Part/s” and “Section/s” are interchangeable. The word chosen is what has been transcribed from any folders, paper used etc to keep the various drafts together. This was done to help those using the material to discern the order in which the redrafts were done.

Pages labelled “miscellaneous” were unable to be identified and have been listed along with the material interspersed with.

BOX Item Content

4 21 Exercise book labelled “Lyttelton Harbour Board”. Loose material cont. interspersed throughout the pages include letters, typed historical notes, newspaper clippings, typescript drafts of the introduction, foreword and contents list.

1 photo and pencil drawing in envelope labelled “Rakaia photos”. Pencil drawing of “Sequoia Wellingtonia, Havelock St, Ashburton." Sept. 1923. “V. F.R.” Photo of house. Unlabelled apart from “Mr Mackie” written on back. Undated. BOX 5 22 14 groups of cards on various topics. Most contained in envelopes. Appear to have some form of chronological arrangement. i.e. envelopes have dates written on the front. BOX 6 23 8 groups of cards on various topics. Some are in envelopes. Arrangement appears to be similar to 22 above.

Notes

The material has been arranged into 1 box of research notes and three boxes of typescript.

Due to difficulty in reading handwriting and the nature of the material the notes have not been arranged and listed as individual items and a summary of the content of the handwritten material has not been given instead the amount has been listed.

Material that was found contained in an envelope etc was not rearranged and has been listed together with a note* made in the box list. This decision was made based on the assumption that they were likely to have been drafted at the same time.

Some chapter numbers in the various drafts did not correspond with the chapter numbers in the book. Where this has occurred a note has been made identifying the chapter in the book e.g. item no.13.

______Christchurch City Libraries Arch 471 Date updated: September 2005 5 Christchurch City Libraries Arch 471

Much of the typescript appeared to be in no particular draft order. Items were then arranged into chapters and listed according to the chapter no. written on the material.

The chapter numbers or roman numerals have been recorded as given on the material, i.e. Chapter 7 or Chapter VII.

The material listed as references is not labelled as such so it has been assumed that this is what they are. They do not correspond with the footnotes nor with the references in the book.

Redrafts of pages have been placed at the end of an item or in numerical order within an item depending on what would be the least confusing. Pages labelled “miscellaneous” were unable to be identified and have been listed along with the material interpersed with.

Organisation: The Scotter letters and correspondence were deposited in the Canterbury Library archives by a family member in 1986.

An arbitrary arrangement has been chosen to allow ease of access as there did not appear to be any discernible original order when the material was received.

The general arrangement is chronological by date of origination. This date of origination has been taken from the first page of the letters unless specified. Where a note has been added eg: to his father in a letter to his mother this has been treated as a separate letter if the note is substantial. A significant number of letters have been written over a number of days and the additions have been dated. These additional dates have not been recorded.

Sub series have been established where a collection of letters reflect a significant change in his life illustrated by a temporary or permanent change in his address. This has been done in order to give a clearer picture of his day to day thoughts and activities whereas arrangement by eg: family member would be more disjointed. A list of letters to family members etc has been given as an appendix.

In the item descriptions HS Harry Scotter. The addresses of the Scotter family have not been listed unless given in the letter. There appears to have been a number of shifts by the various members which caused difficulty in establishing where they were at a specific time. The dates and location of the family are given in the biographical notes where it could be established by the content of the letters, Stones or Wises directories and general electoral rolls. A number of New Zealanders are mentioned. These people have [NZer] or [NZer?] beside their name. The term 'letters' has been used where the sub series consist solely of letters written by the same person. The term 'correspondence' is used where the sub series contains letters written and received by Harry Scotter. Any quotations eg: pet names used as a form of address are given in double quotation marks. All items in the collection are handwritten except a telegram and poster. Some of the handwriting was difficult to read therefore there maybe some inaccuracy due to this particularly in regard to names of people where verification was not always possible.

A diary which relates to his trip to Edinburgh etc (sub series 5) can be found in z Ms 277/2/1.

Content: This collection of letters and correspondence covering the period when Harry Scotter completed a doctorate in history at King's College, London provide a number of valuable insights into not only Harry Scotter but also England and the countries he

visited as seen through the eyes of a New Zealand male in his mid twenties during the inter-war period and when the effects of the great economic depression were peaking particularly long term unemployment.

The material in this series appear to be a result and an illustration of the sense of mission that Harry Scotter felt to improve the level of education in New Zealand schools and the wider community. This is shown for example by his request that his letters, diaries, postcards etc sent to New Zealand be kept for possible use as teaching aids. Many of his letters also contain very detailed description of places visited eg: art galleries, churches, museums, towns as well as lectures, talks, plays and films attended. Many of the speakers and writers he mentions were people well known in their particular field and are illustrative of both the conflict between the increasing social conscience and active protest in literature and politics as well as the conservatism of eg: churches.

Different aspects of Harry Scotters personality are highlighted by studying the tone and content of his letters to various members of his family. The letters to his father tend to be of a serious nature with discussion about his future, politics, religion, literature, church services, talks and lectures attended. Letters to his brother (Fred) and sisters (Kathleen, Gertrude and Ella) tend to be mostly lighter in content and more jovial and relaxed in style. His letters to his mother contain most of the matters of a more domestic nature including updates on his health, clothes purchased, comments on family news etc. The letters to his mother also provide insight into not only his own activities and impressions but those of other New Zealanders living in England at this time. Many social activities were with them eg: Colin Bailey (Col) his room mate at the boarding house in Coram Street who was from Wellington. Descriptions of time spent with other people eg: his uncle and aunt (Rev and Mrs Penny) and his cousin Margaret provide some insight into life in London.

Throughout his letters there are frequent and at times detailed updates on his activities and progress etc with his academic work. His letters also contain many references to the volume of mail or lack of it and its passage and speed to and from New Zealand. These comments as well as his frequent letter writing indicate that frequent communication with his family and news of New Zealand was very important to him. 4

Biographical History: Dr William Henry Scotter 1905-74

Harry Scotter [the name Harry appears to have been used at least by his family and friends] was a well known New Zealand historian and author of Canterbury and Otago centennial histories. He was born in Dunedin, attended Rangiora High and studied history at Victoria University College. After completing his doctorate in history at Kings College, London in 1933 he returned to New Zealand and took up a teaching position at Waitaki Boy's High School where he became involved in Oamaru repertory productions and tutored in adult education classes. He wrote one of the 1948 centennial histories of Otago "Run, Estate, and Farm".

From 1955 to 1961 he taught english and history at Ashburton Technical College.

______Christchurch City Libraries Arch 471 Date updated: September 2005 21 Christchurch City Libraries Arch 471

In 1960 he completed the third and final volume of the centennial "History of Canterbury" and wrote two sections of the second volume. While he was writing the centennial history the University of Canterbury appointed him as a temporary lecturer in history.

Harry Scotter also wrote "Ashburton, Town and Country", a centennial history for the Church of St Mary the Virgin Addington 1867-19647, the Lyttleton Harbour Board (1968) and the Paparua County Council. Shortly before his death he completed a 4th edition of L.G.D. Acland's "The early Canterbury runs". He also planned to write the centennial history of the Timaru Harbour Board and St George's Hospital. At the time of his death in 1974 he was survived by his two sons.

Harry Scotter was the eldest son in a family of five belonging to Rev Adolphus Nelson Scotter and his wife Margaret (formerly Margaret Sowden from Dunsandel). Harry had one brother Fred and three sisters Ella, Gertrude and Kathleen. His father went to Victoria University College and Otago University obtaining a BA. He was a school teacher in Gisbourne before becoming a Methodist minister, having ministries in Gisbourne, Springston, Karori, Roslyn, Auckland, Sydenham, Waimate, Rangiora, Wellington, Cambridge Terrace, Palmerston North and Thames. Rev Scotter was secretary of the New Zealand Conference from 1924-29, President in 1930 and chairman of the North Canterbury District from 1929-31. He retired in 1939.

Kathleen Scotter shifted from Christchurch to Palmerston North at about the same time as her parents where she was the director of the YWCA. Gertrude Scotter appears in the 1931 general electoral roll as unmarried and living in Motueka. She is not listed as living there in the 1935 electoral roll. Ella shifted from possibly Te Kuiti to somewhere near the Hurunui, North Canterbury during 1933. Fred Scotter was completing his secondary school education during most of the period the letters were written and seems to have been living at home.

Addresses of Rev and Mrs Scotter 1930-33 verified by Stones Directory or Wises New Zealand Post Office Directory.
