Arch 471: W.H. Scotter

Christchurch City Libraries Arch 471 Arch 471 W.H. Scotter Ashburton : A history with records of town and country Notes: Handwriten notes found interspersed with the typescript have not been removed. This decision is based on the assumption that they appear to directly relate. Unnumbered typescript pages were not removed or individually listed if interspersed with numbered pages. Any breaks in pagination due to a page not being originally included is not listed. i.e. if there is a note on e.g. p.24 to go straight to p.26, p.25 is not recorded as missing. Redrafts of pages have been placed at the end of an item or in numerical order within an item depending on what would be the least confusing. There may well be gaps in the typescript of the five sections but because of the nature of the material due to redrafts of pages and parts of sections the information is often in a different order from that published. Item nos.with * beside them indicate that they were in an envelope labelled “My draft of Parts 2, 3, 4”. The words “Part/s” and “Section/s” are interchangeable. The word chosen is what has been transcribed from any folders, paper used etc to keep the various drafts together. This was done to help those using the material to discern the order in which the redrafts were done. Pages labelled “miscellaneous” were unable to be identified and have been listed along with the material interspersed with. Ashburton : A history with records of town and country. BOX 5 22 14 groups of cards on various topics. Most contained in envelopes. Appear to have some form of chronological arrangement. i.e. envelopes have dates written on the front. BOX 6 23 8 groups of cards on various topics. Some are in envelopes. Arrangement appears to be similar to 22 above. Notes The material has been arranged into 1 box of research notes and three boxes of typescript. Due to difficulty in reading handwriting and the nature of the material the notes have not been arranged and listed as individual items and a summary of the content of the handwritten material has not been given instead the amount has been listed. Material that was found contained in an envelope etc was not rearranged and has been listed together with a note* made in the box list. This decision was made based on the assumption that they were likely to have been drafted at the same time. Some chapter numbers in the various drafts did not correspond with the chapter numbers in the book. Where this has occurred a note has been made identifying the chapter in the book e.g. item no.13. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Christchurch City Libraries Arch 471 Date updated: September 2005 5 Christchurch City Libraries Arch 471 Much of the typescript appeared to be in no particular draft order. Items were then arranged into chapters and listed according to the chapter no. written on the material. The chapter numbers or roman numerals have been recorded as given on the material, i.e. Chapter 7 or Chapter VII. The material listed as references is not labelled as such so it has been assumed that this is what they are. They do not correspond with the footnotes nor with the references in the book. Redrafts of pages have been placed at the end of an item or in numerical order within an item depending on what would be the least confusing. Pages labelled “miscellaneous” were unable to be identified and have been listed along with the material interpersed with.
