Founded Bolton Wanderers’ fall from the top has been well documented, but 1877 the baseline is simply that this historic club is still in existence after coming so close to being run out of business.

First through the door for Ian Evatt in the summer was Eoin Doyle, last season’s top scorer in League Two with 25 goals that helped propel Swindon Town to the title.

The chance to move closer to home was too good to turn down for the Irishman though as he opted to link up with his former team mate Evatt, with who he won League Two at Chesterfield in 2013-14, his first season in English football. A prosperous beginning to 2014-15 saw City sign Doyle, and he had subsequent spells at Preston North End and Portsmouth, where he won League Two for a in the dugout second time in 2016-17. After a season he signed on loan at Blackpool, and made the move permanent in January 2007 ahead of helping The Seasiders to League One play-off glory at the end of that season. They then won promotion to the Premier League in 2010 with Evatt playing a part in all 38 games although they ended in relegation, and in 2013 he returned to Chesterfield, winning promotion from League Two in his first season. He retired at The Spireites and became manager at Barrow who he led to the National League title last season.
